Okay so I managed to root the device now, but during the process I found out twodisappointing things:
1. Auto-update doesn't work. So I'm expected to go through this complicated partitioner for every single update? (before you protest "but it's not that easy", LineageOS allows rooting and updating a rooted install just fine, with similar protections and an unrooted default install, and a much simpler tool to unlock it)
2. The rooted image is still patch level november 2017. That's ancient, what is going on? Is this even still maintained?
In overall this seems lackluster and more like "yay we can say we allow rooting" rather than something actually taken much care of. Are there any plans to change this, or will it just stay like this?

Unfortunately, even the stock Android--without the new patch--has a November 2017 security level.

I was thinking the same thing. What happened? Still no update and the November 2017 patch...
Planet Computers kindly should reply something...

I realized some months ago, that 'Planet Computers', is really just a few guys trying to look like a computer company, that are 'bootstrapping' themselves somehow financially, for now to keep things going.
I would be surprised if there's an actual software development group. My guess is they're contracting out to different developers to do different assignments for them. In other words, a piecemeal approach.
Of course, I could be wrong about this, but this is the impression I have given what has been produced and not produced by Planet as of today.

I'm holding off for a few days until people have highlighted the pros and cons.
I updated, and the major con is that the manual update really sucks. I accidentally wiped my userdata and while I got backups, the magic root manager then failed to reinstall itself without throwing me into a boot loop, and the whole process was just a really frustrating waste of an entire day until I got things back working!
If you don't screw it up though, it works fine as far as I can tell. AudioFX (a sound equalizer) which I manually added/installed as a system up crashes regularly now on this new image, but that might be unrelated to the update, it has always been working unreliably. Other than that, everything works fine and my patchlevel is now September 2018. Edit: I forgot, I also got issues with Wifi, not sure if that's the new image...? I don't rely on that much so I don't really care, but it is a little annoying
But holy crap, updates with a complicated flashing tool only. What is planet computers thinking? I get it for complicated mixed installs, but just the regular plain android in the rooted variant? Come on...
