Title: Debian on Gemini - Any News On Updates?
Post by: ArchiMark on December 07, 2018, 09:20:24 pm
Anyone have any news regarding further updates for Debian on Gemini?

Debian TP2 (TP = Technical Preview) has been out for some time now.

Just curious.....

My understanding (but I could be wrong) is that you can update much (maybe not all) of Debian using the Debian apt tools.  I've done some selective updating by using aptitude having updated the repositories. I've not tried a full
Code: [Select]
sudo apt upgradeas I am concerned I might leave the system in an unusable state and I rely on the Gemini too much for daily use.

Yes, you can update via apt, like with any Debian install.....but as you say, it sometimes can mess things up.....

My curiosity is really about whether Planet is supporting Debian at all or just relying on Adam Boardman (and anyone else working with him) to do the job of developing new releases of Debian specifically created for use on Gemini.

Have a feeling it's the latter.....

I get that impression as well.  But I'm glad that at least Adam is doing stuff for the Gemini!

Yes, indeed.....but would be nice if Gemini supported it more too....clear their real focus is Android...

The last I heard from Adam is that he's still working on ofono. Data, text and speakerphone calls are working, though there's still work to be done to fix the automatic start of ofono at boot time (a manual ofono reboot is for now still needed after every reboot) and for the external button recognition to answer calls when the lid is closed. Another user is working on the mouse pointer relative mode, and other people are working to improve the GPU support, for now we anyway have EGL support.

This is great news!  Thanks for the update.  I may end up actually transferring my SIM card to the Gemini and stop carrying my (other) phone with me... well, maybe not as I use the camera on my phone all the time.  But still, good to know!

I have got my T-Moblie sim giving me data on my gemini following https://github.com/gemian/gemini-keyboard-a...DebuggingMobile (https://github.com/gemian/gemini-keyboard-apps/wiki/DebuggingMobile), haven't tried sms or calls though. I can use https://jmp.chat/ (https://jmp.chat/) to text and call over ip through a sms to jabber bridge and voip. haven't tried voip yet though.
