We had a similar thread in the Gemini's subforum, I guess we might open one here too!
New update released yesterday: agreement with the Chinese factory now signed, they have now chosen to keep the P70 as the Cosmo's CPU instead of switching to the new P90, they'll attend CES 2019.

New update #14 is out:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...or#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator#/updates/all)
(seems like direct linking to single updates on Indiegogo is not working anymore, pity).
PCB now working with the internal display, external display now works too, mechanical mock-up has now been approved.

Yes, and the tooling has started for all metal and plastic mechanical components of the Cosmo.
Hm, I used to joke about the apparent 11-day weeks of Planet Computers... but in 22 weeks, we've gotten 14 "weekly" (as they call them) Cosmo updates, which actually is, on average, one every eleven days... Oh well, it'll come when it's done.

Update 15 is out:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...59#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/17943959#/updates/all)
They may have mentioned it earlier, but the outside screen has a separate processor, and they claim that it makes it independent of the OS in the main screen...

I'm guessing that'll make it harder to customise, control, &c…?

I'm guessing that'll make it harder to customise, control, &c…?
They also said something about defining what kind of "messages" the two parts can send to one-another, and if that is "known" by the OS, then it should be possible? In terms of customizing the LOOK it should be quite straightforward?? And sending over buttons or menu items should make "toggling" the "right" switches possible in the OS, so it should be possible to do almost anything, unless it is restricted by f.ex. the size of items sent (watching a big video on the outside screen might be impossible, and would be kind of impractical anyway...)?
But anyway, update 16 is out:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...59#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/17943959#/updates/all)
Don't really remember much about what they said, but of course, you (all of the maybe 200+? people reading this tread) might have different preferences than me, and find all of it very interesting!
-
Update 17 is out, The first picture alone is worth the price of admission, it looks gorgeous, I just want to stroke it.
Lots of interesting news in the update too.
We're getting pretty close, I'm sooooooo excited.

Well, now Update #19 is out.
In the video they are making an emergency call... I hope that the antenna was attached to a network simulator with the device being registered on it and not on a live network
Based on the status bar of the main screen, they had no network coverage at all. I'd guess that's why they were dialing an emergency number, as the Cosmo otherwise probably wouldn't even have botherd trying to making a call, while dialing an emergency number probably forces any smartphone to try anyway, while looking for any network. As the text of Update #18 points out "that the Cover Display is operating in debug engineering mode", it could also be that the Cosmo didnn't actually try making any call, and that 112 was a simple number to dial in the demo.
Were they to dial any other "real" number, at least some of us would certainly try calling that number, just to see who, if anyone, would answer. Since Planet Computers, as far as I know, have no published phone number, they'd need a burner phone or a network simulator, and also make VERY sure nobody actually has, or might soon get, any "real" number they'd dial. Since "everybody" knows what 112 is, I'd guess it's convenient for that reason too, as long as they don't actually dial it for real.
-
Well, now Update #19 is out.
And for those who have selected "Other" as their keyboard layout they now have an online form to fill inn with your actual choice, AND they want you to fill it in before 1st of July.
The same goes for those wanting/needing the Verizon version for USA...

Another message from "The other side"...
Thank you for keeping an eye on the IGG comments. After trying to do so for a while, the general tone made me go away. While I'm not easily offended, it just made me sad.
Looking forward to the weekend update (I'm guessing it arrives on Monday). In the last update, from about two weeks ago, they said they'd publish the final mass production schedule "soon", so I hope this update will deliver on that. In another thread I guessed mass production would commence on July 29. I'm seriously starting to doubt that guess now. We'll soon see, I hope.

"Over the weekend" in "Planet-speak" would probably just mean before NEXT weekend
But they could of course surprise us by being "on time" this time??
[blockquote]A short description of "Planet time":[/blockquote]- A minute is 100 seconds (easier to work with mathematically...)
- An hour is 100 minutes (same as for minutes...)
- A day is 26 hours, at least!! (Or is it probably 25 hours, as that is easier to work with mathematically???) (Which kind of suits me, as my daily cycle probably is closer to that than 24 hours)
- A week is 8 days (If that gives them one more day of work, or of the weekend, I do not know...)
- A month is probably 33 1/3 days (unless they need some more time; then it is 50 days...)
- And a year is then at least 400 days (and might be 600...)
And as an effect of all of this, a "Planet lightyear" will then be longer than the "standard". (Which again makes kind of sense in that Planet is an English company, and the English have a history of not "liking standards" in the first place...)

We will get there.
I'm sure the Cosmo will be worth it, but like Xmas, the waiting is the hard part. Personally, I'm not anxious at all right now, honest, really, if I can just convince myself...

Ahh... those days in '70s and '80s when imported british vehicles had screws we home-mechanics didn't have tools for. Can't remember if those were torx style, brits being ahead of times? Now, when the brexit seems to become reality, maybe Britain will take some steps backwords - away from metrics and towards pounds, shillings & pennies. Just kidding I've always felt sympathy for british life style & stuff, but now I feel sadness them leaving EU so surprisingly and to my opinion: unthinkably. Cheers'... (kippis).

So those were torx screwheads. I wish you had told me that back then, you would have saved me a fortune in broken knuckles, bad language and tins of WD40. I thought everybody maintained vehicles this way. I still have my large collection of hammers and pliers for servicing, but these days my Mazda and Nissan seem to have little need for them.

I feel sadness them leaving EU so surprisingly and to my opinion: unthinkably.
Some of us Brits feel exactly the same! (Remember that almost half of us voted to remain in the EU -- and many of the rest weren't expecting such a drastic approach to leaving, nor the incompetence with which it's being handled. Yet somehow those at the centre of politics have turned it into a childish my-Brexit-is-harder-than-yours competition! Whatever happens, it's not going to end well -- and there seems to be nothing that any of us can do to stop it.)

In all seriousness, I'm absolutely looking forward to this update more than anything else. Assuming nothing went wrong between the last update and now this could be the one we're all eagerly waiting for

I stand corrected: Over the weekend actually turned out to be just "over the weekend" (and by just a few minutes too...). Somebody must have fixed all the clock and calendars over there!!! (If they could just fix the alarms in Agenda as well, things would really start looking good...)

Slight delay in schedule, but that is probably a good thing (compared to a rushed product with faults/flaws...)!!
Compared to the (already delayed) schedule from Update #13, we've now essentially slipped another month, with start of mass production scheduled for the last week of August, so shipping can thus occur no earlier than September, suggesting that the Cosmo will, much like the Gemini, be about four months late, pending that no further issues are found in the PR2 samples, that is. But yes, indeed, rather get it right than rush it.

I should of course have said "slight FURTHER delay in schedule", but I would still rather have it "right" than a "left hand work" (don't really know if it is an expression in English, but assume people understand what I mean, and it fits quite good with wanting it to be "right" ).
Of course, if I don't have it by Christmas, I will be quite annoyed with Santa Claus... (Which of course would be totally unfair, because as far as we know he doesn't work there, does he? Although, if he indeed DOES work there, that might account for their somewhat "loose" concepts of time: As anybody knows Santa Clause needs to have som kind of "time-bending" capabilities in order to get around and deliver all those those presents for Christmas, so it would be fair to assume that time around him wold be kind of erratic ... )

Sorry Gymbo, I didn't mean to steal your thunder by four minutes, but bizarrely UK 'Planet time' seems to align very well with NZ 'Normal person time' for some reason.
Then again, I had just spent the previous six hours staring at the indiegogo page while tapping the refresh icon on the browser.

Thank you for picking that gem out of the mud. If their estimates in Update #21 worked out, Planet Computers should be receiving the PR2 samples approximately today, and the mass production should commence in eleven or so days.

If they're rolling off the line at end of August, any wild guess as to actual shipment? I wonder how long the actual assembly takes in the factory.

If they're rolling off the line at end of August, any wild guess as to actual shipment? I wonder how long the actual assembly takes in the factory.
The first Gemini PCB mass production begun around Saturday, January 20, 2018 (Update #44). Final assembly of entire devices begun on Thursday, February 1, 2018 (Update #45) and was complete on Saturday, February 10 (Update #48). The [a href=\'index.php?showtopic=34795\']earliest post I have found here on OESF[/a] from a user who received their Gemini, says it arrived on Thursday, March 1, 2018. I got my (X25) Gemini on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
How these numbers might translate to the Cosmo is anybody's guess.
-
How these numbers might translate to the Cosmo is anybody's guess.
We can do a little bit more than guess, the run will probably be bigger than the first Gemini one as they only made ~1,000 Geminis on the that run (with the x25), the device is a bit more complex but conversely they have manufacturing experience with the Gemini which should transfer to the Cosmo easily enough.
So probably a little longer, assuming no serious problems in production, 6 to 7 weeks after all the parts are delivered to the factory.

All the Cosmo parts are already delivered to the factory currently, so production speed will be faster this time around.

My own wild guess is that it will be a big surprise, one way or another.
But you folks' number-crunching is fascinating to ponder.

A non-google translator gives:

Makes a bit more sense

Interesting reading, thanks for the links. I think this is the first time I've seen a picture of the back of the Cosmo.
I hope the specification from PC Watch, saying that "Type-C port supports HDMI output" is correct. It would be nice to not have to depend on a proprietary adapter for that. The next sentence, saying "USB PD is not supported, but one port is compatible with MediaTek's fast charging technology 'Pump Express'" is a tad worrying though. I was under the impression that, according to Update #8, "Both the left hand side and right hand side USB-C interfaces will be able to charge the Cosmo".
Perhaps I'm reading too much into a pair of news articles. Both claims the Cosmo supports Bluetooth 5.0, which seems unlikely, as the Helio P70 (which one of the articles calls "Helio 970"), according to MediaTek, only supports up to Bluetooth 4.2, so maybe other stated facts aren't completely correct either. Time will tell.
I can't help but find it a tad ironic that news articles from Japan spreads quicker than the official communication from Planet Computers, but well, that's how it is. Either way, I'm grateful for the information.
Edit: And, oh. Cosmo Update #23 is out, offering a link to details pertaining to a backer meetup in Tokyo. While in the other end of the world for me, I hope those attending has a great time.

Awesome, thanks for sharing!
Btw, regarding that second link: I wonder if the reviewer ever saw anything else besides macOS 'cause to me the dock looks almost the same as the AmigaOS 4.1 dock, not the macOS dock.

In the spec it says:
"Sensors Accelerometer, light sensor, gyroscope, magnetic-sensor"
So have they worked out how to make the compass work with all the magnets holding it shut or should it have read:
"Sensors Accelerometer, light sensor, gyroscope, magnetic-sensor(disabled)"
No compass on the Gemini is a shame because it means astronomy apps don't work so well, it'd be nice if they would work on the Cosmo.
Sod this, I'll email them and ask, I'll get back if I get a reply.

Ditto Varti, I would have loved to be there too. On the plus side though, it looks beautiful, and we're very nearly there. Soon we won't be discussing videos and articles, we'll be discussing our new toys.

Indeed. However, if production, as scheduled, actually begun THIS, wouldn't we have heard, at least SOMETHING, about it by now?
I'm not going to act like I'm surprised that Planet Computers says nothing. Still, in the very midst of what could be the most exciting week of the Cosmo project thus far, isn't the complete radio silence a bit too quiet for comfort, even by their standards? Or am I missing just something?

I worry less about PC and more about the effect of a crash-out Brexit on Cosmo production and shipping.
Jake
-
As payments were handled by Indiegogo in the US, the factory is in China and the main warehouse is in Hong Kong, I doubt the crowdfunded Cosmos would be affected much, though shipments to the EU would better not be routed via the UK. What might get nasty post-Brexit, I think, is if EU customers has to order new things from, or have faulty units repaired in, the UK. Planet Computers has a partner for the market in Japan. Perhaps they'll also need one to handle repairs and further sales in the EU.
Disclaimer: I'm not a subject expert, there may be issues I can't think of. I'm just sharing my thoughts, while waiting for the next official update.

Update #25 is out, telling that the Cosmo has been approved for Google Mobile Services, meaning it will be able to run the licensed version of various Google services and apps, such as Play Store, Maps, Search and what not.
-
Are the Google Mobile Services the same as on the Gemini? If so, was there ever any real doubt about them?
-
Are the Google Mobile Services the same as on the Gemini? If so, was there ever any real doubt about them?
I think this has more to do with formal approvals, rather than anything related to actual functionality.
Back on Nougat, my Gemini used to say, somewhere in the About phone section of the settings, something akin to not being approved for Google services, yet they worked just fine all along. Currently, on Oreo, my Gemini, claims to have a serial number of 0123456789ABCDEF, which, obviously, is inaccurate, be it in a, mostly, irrelevant way. As a nerd or geek, I can live with that.
However, as the Cosmo, reasonably, aspires to be a "real", if fairly niche, mainstream product, rather than the pioneering device, for the specially interested, that is the Gemini, Planet Computers reasonably has to get from "well, it works" to "it works well", as selling a device complaining about not being properly licensed or showing a serial number, suggesting the device might have been hacked, or something, probably wouldn't be very well received among a more general population.

Hi guys (i'm new here )
I just received a mail from Planet stating they expect the Cosmo will be ready for shipping end of this month (Order placed in Juli) so the brexit wont be an issue. They will send us the tracking details once it is shipper. So fingers crossed that there wont be a delay .

Welcome to the club!
To clarify, think Planet said in recent update that the 'first batch' of Cosmos will start shipping by end of the month. However, depending upon the total number of orders and where you are in the order queue, you may or may not get your Cosmo from the first batch. If not, yours could be from the next batch.
And to be clear, I'm not saying whether you will or won't get one from the first batch. Just trying to explain how this works for you and otheres.
Hope this makes sense.

And more info from Planet's recent Week 42 Update....
Based upon them saying they have 4000 PCB's, assume it means the 'first batch' to ship out will have 4000 Cosmo's minus some used for testing or don't meet specs, etc.
So, if your order is within this number of units, you should be getting one from first batch I think.....
We shall see.....

Production has started!
Big news! We have started production!
Production has indeed started this week, with 4000 Cosmo PCBs being produced this week.
First Cosmo units are now scheduled to be assembled next week and the assembly and packaging schedules will continue during all of September.
We now expect that the first Cosmo Communicator perks will be shipped out to backers in about two weeks.

Have placed my order in November last year, (#8xx) and got no mail yet. So, I think the shipping date may also depend on keyboard selection (some keyboard layouts might have not been delivered to Planet yet). At least it has been this way with the Gemini. My keyboard layout is German. What is yours?

So here is few highlights from our last update...
First, something about schedule... Sorry about that I'm reading this update like devil reads bible, but reading these update between lines, you know what is going on.
"There was a short delay"
"this has taken a few days longer"
"last part finally arriving today"
"First Cosmo mass production assmebly is now due to start at the beginning of next week"
"First mass production packaging of the Cosmo is to follow shortly after"
"hoping that the first backers to receive their Cosmos in the last week of September / first week of October"
So Assembly is starting next week, that is also last full week of September. And at same week "hoping that the first backers to receive their Cosmos in the last week of September"
So I think we can assume that first Cosmos can be received somewhere 2nd or 3rd week of October, or something like that?
And update contained few teasers also...
"
Our CTO, Dr Davide Guidi, will be travelling to China this weekend and visiting the assembly plant to oversee the first Cosmo mass production assembly and packaging.
We will be on the ground providing updates next week
"
So it says updates, not update... sounds that we have exciting next week containing few updates, sounds good...
"
Tomorrow we will be filming several How-To videos about the Cosmo that will act as introductory online video tutorials on how to use your Cosmo.
These will be posted on-line in a few weeks
"
in a few weeks there'll be also few videos where they are showing Cosmo in fully functional and playing around with it, sounds good...
And also regular "More news from us from next week" -signature at the end
"
More news from us from the assmebly line next week!
"
-
new teaser
"
There will ne a new backer update later today!

Indiegogo contribution #3999 receipt for Cosmo Communicator
Oops... I guess mine will be in batch #2.

Edit: new update (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/22226847#/updates/27)!
Cosmo Communicator Campaign - Week 45 Update
Dear Cosmo backers!
Here is our latest update from our factory in China announcing exciting news...
The first mass produced Cosmo Communicators came off the production line yesterday!
Here (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/22226847#/updates/27) are photos from the factory floor and the Cosmo production line , sent by our CTO:
The pictures say it all!
We are very pleased that we have reached this milestone.
The Cosmo release firmware has also been signed off this week and has been flashed into the produced Cosmo Communicators.
We are now going through a set of quality control checks on the Cosmos produced this week.
Following the quality checks, the first Cosmo will be packaged, sent to our warehouse in Hong Kong and then sent out to backers.
More from us soon.
Best regards,
Team Cosmo

Yeah, I could have been a bit more "positive" about the previous update, but other than the pouch, the "new" perks were actually just "recycled" from the Gemini...
But now update 27 is out, and THIS time it really is a "things are progressing more or less according to plan"-update. And I believe it was on time, AGAIN!:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...or#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator#/updates/all)

Very good news... reminds me of the "first Geminis produced" update a year and half ago And yes, I guess we can all be more positive now.
Yes, Gemini update #45, from Thursday, February 1, 2018, said "final assembly of Gemini started today". The [a href=\'index.php?showtopic=34795\']earliest post[/a] on OESF from a user who received their Gemini, says it arrived on Thursday, March 1, 2018. Presuming Cosmo update #27 was written late on Thursday, September 26, 2019, in London, its "final assembly of Cosmo started yesterday" could refer to Wednesday, September 25. Four weeks after that would be Wednesday October 23. Last time, it took a few more weeks before all early backers had received their Geminis. Should that pattern repeat, some early backers may have to wait until November. However, as Planet Computers has previously stated that deliveries to Europe will be shipped via the UK, it remains to be seen whether the end of October might somehow influence their priorities.
-
Higher res versions of some of the photos from the chinese factory have been published on the Gemini PDA Telegram channel by one of its admins, I'm attaching them here with permission. Also, a chinese-speaking user has found an interesting info from the first photo: at the time the shoot was taken they were producing 300 units per hour. Planet has stated that 4000 units will be produced in the first batch, so they might well have finished manufacturing them by now. Just in time too, since a national holiday will start tomorrow in China (National Day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Day_...ublic_of_China) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Day_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China)), which will last for 3 days, but most people will probably stay at home on next Friday too for the weekend.

Not sure where to put it but found a review of the device from 2 oct.
https://bigtechquestion.com/2019/10/03/revi...nicator-review/ (https://bigtechquestion.com/2019/10/03/review/cosmo-communicator-review/)
Quote from website:
The first batch of devices literally rolled off the production floor in China last week, and naturally the Indiegogo backers will get theirs first. And due to a whole week of Chinese holidays, nothing is happening this week so it will be next week before Planet starts shipping those first units.
That means you'll probably be waiting until late November before yours will arrive, if you ordered now. I hope to get a review unit within a couple of weeks, and will update this review then.
(i "ordered" the Cosmo via Planet itself some months back (because i had no credit card, but it is added to their "internal" list as igg perk)
So hopefully we will get some good news after the Chinese holidays!

New update over the weekend, according to PC!
Out now...
...we miscalculated the extent to which the China National Day celebration would disrupt our plans. This year, there was a 7 day celebration period. As well as he production pause this past week, there was no possibility of shipping any units out of the factory during last week, as the freight services were also halted. Our CTO and our staff on the ground in China tried their hardest, but it was really impossible. Production and packaging will now restart in a couple of days and we now hope to have the first Cosmo perks reaching our warehouse in Hong Kong and be shipped out to backers during this week.
-
According to IndieGoGo discussion, at least one backer has now received Cosmo!

So they are shipping right now?!
Mostly it's the Japanese model that is shipping right now, according to the update. (They have a different keyboard.)
After the Japanese batch, next up is the EU/UK and standard US batch, so they should arrive in the EU in 1-2 weeks.
The final batch are the US Verizon model.
(This is down to these three versions having different motherboards.)
-
I would say not "mostly", but "only". I have EU version with contribution #17 and it is not locked yet. But I am not complaining, actually I am very glad that my Cosmo will not be from the first assembly.
-
The specific wording in update #29 was "Most of the initial shipment batch of Cosmo perks are shipping to Japan", so I guess that's where the "mostly" came from, but yes, the units currently shipping elsewhere is reasonably also of the Japanese model, presumably backed by Japanese users elsewhere in the world.
-
...EU version... ....not locked yet...
I personally think that European backers IndieGoGo contribution status will not change until Planet Computers will import European batch to their European distribution center. So I think when they import pallet of Cosmos to distribution center, then our contribution status will change and then start dispatching our Cosmos by so called last mile carries.
I'am from Finland with little bit higher contribution ID, because of backed campaign on December.
Nice to see that our campaign is already at this stage, soon our wait will be over and our friends and colleagues are asking what the h*** is that, is it new, where can I get one... etc

Maybe I'm just being selfish here, but given that European ones have far further to travel -- and given the uncertainties around shipping that Brexit will cause (whenever it happens -- don't blame me, I didn't vote for it...), wouldn't it be more reasonable to ship the EU Cosmos first, before they get all snarled up??

Thank you! This is as good an update, as the official e-mails. [Edit: Quite a bit better, actually]. Some highlights:
At around 3:10 Dr. Janko says "We will have the phone out completely to everybody... before twelve months". As the crowdfunding begun on Monday, November 5 2018, that would leave only two weeks. The crowdfunding ended on Thursday, December 6. If that's what he's referring to, every single backer should have their device before Friday, December 6 2019.
At around 5:29 he says "So we hope to complete all the production by the end of this month and to ship out the units... latest in the first week of November".
At 5:46 Dr.Janko says "Today is the twenty-first", so this appears to have been recorded on Monday, October 21. He continues "we well be essentially shipping out the units in the next week and the week after that and that's it.". That should suggest they expect to be done shipping by Sunday, November 10 (as weeks seems to end on a Sunday in the UK).
[Edit: There are quite a few technical tidbits in this video too. We've probably read somewhere that the external screen has a resolution of 536 x 240 (that would fit 84% of a Series 5 screen, or 168% of a Series 3...) but there were a few other details, like the Cosmo having three antennas for good coverage, a fairly extensive demo of the external screen, apparently they are toying with decorative stickers for the Cosmo and it seems they'll have a backer meeting in London before the end of the year. Near the end, he reiterates that their current goal is to have all devices shipped by "the end of the first week of November", so that would indeed be Sunday, November 10, 2019. When they will reach their backers, will, of course, depend on various postal services.]

You could definitely argue that way. I suspect that one reason for the JP units being prioritised is that they need to fulfil a retail order there, so are producing the retail and the indiegogo units at the same time. Delivering the retail would surely be very nice for their cashflow. It's just a hunch. Incidentally, I'm still waiting for my JP PCB version, albeit with the UK keyboard. I expect this puts me somewhere at the back of the queue.

At least Brexit is apparently getting yet another extension, so no need to worry about extra customs fees or stuff like that.

New update coming before the end of the day tomorrow!
Looks like one more hiccup:
Hence, there was a pause in production early last week and no shipments of Cosmo perks since then.
Cosmo production restarted 3 days ago, on the 26th of October, using the re-supplied components.
But we're almost there

I'm pleased they stopped the run. There were a few fit and finish issues with early Geminis so glad to see the focus on quality this time round. A few weeks will be worth it to get a decent Cosmo.
-
Seems like it is an advantage NOT to be in the very first production run
While it was true for the X25, non-e-sim, keyboard challenged first-batch Gemini (I still like mine), since they've been checking quality quite a bit more thoroughly this time, I would presume they haven't been letting early Cosmos through with dodgy components, but rather found the rejection rate of some of them to be so high that, in order to not run out of stock, they either would have had to accept parts that weren't quite up to spec, or order more and wait for them. Apparently, they chose the latter, which I think was the right choice.
While a six-month project running six months late, cannot be okay by any metric, doing things right is far more important than trying to save a few days. When it ran late, they tried rushing the Gemini, at the expense of quality. At least, it seems they're not repeating THAT mistake again, but before even considering a third device, I think they need to get to the bottom of these delays. If nothing else, they may have to humbly accept that a project like this takes about one year, and plan any future crowdfunding accordingly.

Yes, I don't have a problem waiting, either, and can only hope that Daniel W is right, that the problem was intermittent and easy-to-spot and our Japanese friends didn't get screwed.

That's a relief that you are receiving Cosmo by UPS. In Finland regional postal office is starting strike, worst case scenario for strike is about two weeks. And after that it will took a while until flow of packet will normalized again.

Hey, many thanks, SNi, for those pix of comparison, etc.
What's your initial opinion of the hinge?
Also, when watching the How to Use the Front screen video, I couldn't tell if users could access their contacts to dial out, or whether you had to dial from keypad only. Might you have an answer for that?

Delivered, unboxed, have it charging... Gah, have to go exchange my MicroSIM for a NanoSIM...
Congratulations. While I nowadays happens to own a SIM card punch, I've had success in the past cutting down a MicroSIM to a NanoSIM, following this guide https://gosoftworks.com/apps/resources/nano...m/nanosima4.pdf (https://gosoftworks.com/apps/resources/nano-sim/nanosima4.pdf) when I went from a (non-Planet) smartphone to another. It might be worth noting that while the larger SIM sizes are 0.76mm thick, a NanoSIM is supposed to be 0.67mm. For my other smartphone, it fit nicely without altering the thickness, but, formally, one should sand it down by 0.09mm.

Hinge seems solid, but then I never had any issues with my Gemini... On the front screen when calling you can touch the contact icon and get a list... Scroll through and pick a person, or touch an AZ icon to pull up the alphabet to select a letter and jump to the corresponding contacts...
Hmm, left swipe I get the main menu icons, but when I pick the phone icon it's a little on the iffy side - sometimes nothing happens (I'm tapping the phone icon) and after a period of time the menu disappears... Tried it a couple of dozen times, perhaps 75% success rate

Received my cosmo today. Accessories were included even though that contribution is still in placed status and not locked or shipped. The unit is fantastic. An upgrade in every regard. It feels faster, the keyboard has no sticking points, and the backlight is a huge welcome addition. The front screen is also much smoother and more responsive than the videos up until now suggested. The absence of android 9 gesture navigation is a slight sore spot, and the autodimming is still too conservative. My only other real gripe ootb is that ledison emulation doesn't seem to do anything, though i haven't done thorough testing. Ill reserve further judgement for the 48 hour mark, but I'm happy with the upgrade and feel the money was very well spent at this moment. The make or break for me is ultimately going to rest with OtherOS support, so here's hoping we at least get gemian, kali, and I pray a dalvik enabled sailfish.
-
@shinkamui One of PC's earlier test videos showed an option to disable the nav buttons in the Cosmo settings app. Normally on Android (9/10) that enables gesture navigation. Try that
-
@SNi--thanks for your follow-up. Glad to hear about the Contacts access on the front screen. Concerned that you're having difficulties working some of the icons.
I wonder what's going on?
Fingers crossed for better news,

I could be doing it wrong. The only option I saw was hide navigation bar, and it definitely didn't enable gestures. Just forced me to navigate with the keyboard which is actually worse for my use case Can you point me to the video in question?
-
In that case you're going to have to wait until root becomes available to force enable gestures.

Surprised by UPS email advising delivery Nov. 8th.
Cosmo (perk backer 80#) received Friday evening, the 8th.
Frankly, I am underwhelmed by it.
Perhaps I will, in time, explain why that is....
BTW, some thin-skinned, shite-head and self-appointed moderator? protector? of Planet has (again) blocked my commenting access to the Cosmo Indiegogo page.
So, I cannot post there.
Cheers.

There were also this quotation on IndieGoGo by HIB. So end of day tommorrow....
“Stock for some of the Cosmo orders has been allocated, even if it still in transit to the warehouse in Europe which will process our European orders. As Europe is home to most of our regional keyboard layouts, our factory prefers to manufacture the larger quantities first – US / Japanese keyboard units. Some of the regional layouts have been made, hence why some orders were locked. We expect to fulfil most perks by the end of November to early-December.”

I seem to recall that during the Gemini campaign, backers found nuggets of information using other outlets like Facebook.
It's so good to see that PC has learned from their mistakes and for Cosmo has prioritised keeping backers updated using the campaign platform itself....no wait...
-
Update #32 out now
The European shipment was stuck awaiting freight documents. It will reach the EU in the weekend, so they hope to ship out the first EU Cosmos to backers during next week. They've had more quality control issues than they expected, so they're only a bit past halfway through the run, scheduled to be done four days ago, but well, they're making progress. Also, there are a few new Cosmo Communicator How-To Videos.

There were link posted on IndieGoGo about review of Cosmo
Nice review, though I don't think the Psion Series 5 had a better keyboard. On both of my units, I had to hit the keys firmly and dead-center to get a consistent typing experience, so I prefer the Gemini over the Psion, and thus I have high hopes for the Cosmo keyboard.
Anyway, since this "Indiegogo" thread has become "latest Cosmo Coverage on any platform", here's any unboxing video the YouTube algorithm threw my way today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p3DgWdjQYA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p3DgWdjQYA)
It's purely an unboxing, followed by showing a powered OFF Cosmo - serial number [prefix]000014, it seems - from, basically, every angle. Oh, well. There's also this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVBxVVw85LM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVBxVVw85LM)
It shows some supposed Cosmo accessories (the usual hub, HDMI adapter and extra charger). Their boxes says "Gemini", which might be how things are right now, but then the reviewer shoved the Cosmo into a Gemini leather pouch (and, somewhat later, also identified it as such), seemingly unaware of the Cosmo-specific pouch. Not sure the latter video is worth watching, but, well, it's a 50-subscriber channel. Gotta start somewhere.

Psion 5 keyboards varied a little. I used about 6 over the years, but for me, ALL were better than the Gemini I'm typing this on! (Though I think they vary a bit, too; mine's a second-batch one.) The Gemini's keys are slightly too loose, and wobble too much; they're fairly forgiving of being pressed off-centre sideways, but less so of being pressed above or below, especially below. (The space bar gives me particular trouble, though quite a few other keypresses fail to register.)
OTOH, the Psion keyboard is a very high bar; the Gemini's still better than any other small keyboard I've seen! And I gather Planet have made improvements, so I'm hopeful about the Cosmo.

I've been locked since Sunday - no cigar yet I'm afraid!
A Cosmo, most probably
I may well have inadvertantly won that one. Got mine last tuesday. Typing this outside (in the cool) at night in Brisbane. The backlight is amazing and I am still able to easily type this in near total darkness.
-

I can report that the cosmo keyboard is close to perfect. A bit more "clicky" that the gemini, so it has the feeling of a mechanical keyboard rather than buttons. The space bar issues of the gemini are a long lost memory. I am touch typing this with my usual closest finger method and thumbs on the spacebar without missing a beat. Oh, and to rub it in, I am sitting outside in the cool air in near darkness typing this on the backlit keyboard
Seriously though, I've had the gemini for over 18 months, and can honestly say that the cosmo keyboard is better.

New update published....

Short summary of the just released update, regarding the schedule for my own configuration (Fin/Swe)
few quotations from update:
"following quality checks"
"We hope to complete... ...assembly and packaging... ....by the end of next week"
"This also means smaller language quantities"
So all Cosmo perks should be assembled and packed at end of next week. (This should also include quality control). After all perks are at pallet (Including few rejected and reassembled unit) pallet will be shipped to Hong Kong. And in few days it will be sended to UK. At UK it will be few days at customs and in few days all perks will be at distribution center and from there dispatched within few days. And looks like last mile carrier hand it over, within in day or two.
So looks like I might receive my Cosmo:
best case scenario / (worst case scenario(disinclude weekends or holidays)).
7+(5)+2+2+3+2+1+1+(1)=18/(24) ->
assembly & packing + (reject & reassembly) + transport to HK + dispatch from HK + transport to UK + UK customs + transport to dispatch center + last mile carries short route + (long route)
10th/(16th) December, and I didn't count weekends or anything, just days. There might be change that I might be wrong… Let’s hope that I will, just little more patience…
After all, Thank God Planet Computers have taken enough time for QC and QC have been wide enough, that they spotted flaws at end of the assembly line. Though it means that my relatively rare combination (Fin/Swe) is still "placed" on IndieGoGo.
If you guys at PlanetComputer read this thread, Thank You and Keep up good working... It's good to hear three pallets are already importeed to UK.
-
@maki The factory is closed on weekends, but the HK warehouse, courier to Europe, customs and PC warehouse are all open on weekends and almost all European and American couriers sort and deliver on Saturdays as well.
-

Same here. Also glad that Brexit got delayed at least by a few months and no complications came from that...
-
Off topic as far as IGG goes, yes, but valid as a kind of update, I'd say, and probably we're all paying a bit extra attention to this thread anyway, so:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJvGqZJUV5M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJvGqZJUV5M)
features Mr. Mrsic-Flogel and Davide Guidi, recorded yesterday (Nov 26), it seems, and has some up-to-date info in it.
Of the 4000 first Cosmos, around 3100 seems to be crowdfunding backer devices, while the rest are for retail. However, as all Cosmos (in this production run) with a particular keyboard layout are made in one go, backers with the least common layouts, will, essentially, have to wait until all 4000 units have been made. It seems they were somewhere around 75% done yesterday, so, hopefully, a few more percents done today. And oh, there's a "Linux Technical Preview", in the video as well...
-
And oh, there's a "Linux Technical Preview", in the video as well...
Glad to see things are moving forward with other OSes. They do mention working with community on it, is it about the rooting the cosmo thread on this forum, or is there another cosmo/pc forum or irc or something like that (hopefully not discord)?

Oh good. It's a superb piece of kit, but I'm hoping for an update on the bugs. Ideally some Codi power fixes and sorting out the always-on keyboard backlight.
24h is not a battery life I'm used to. The Gemini went for a whole weekend, the Galaxy Relay S lasted about the same, the Nokia E90, 9500, and 9210 all went about a week between charges.

Have you tried turning off the backlight? Press Fn-shift-b until the keyboard lights go off.

You were doing well with the gemini getting an entire weekend. I could only do that if I left it alone and used it as a phone only (ie. no playing). A lot of the old nokias used to last a long time. Even moderately new ones like the pureview 808 only used to need charging every 2 days - and it had a tiny battery in comparison with the gemini/cosmo.

Of course. But it would be *really* helpful if it would switch off and on with the main display backlight. Having them separate means fumbling around in the dark trying to get the F-S-N right without accidentally doing something you don't want to. It isn't a big problem, admittedly.

It did require some care, yeah. But I'd reliably get 1900 Friday until 0930 Monday morning with anything around 20% battery left.

So yes, bad news for us Nordics... So in best case scenario it's before Christmas and worst case scenario it's before July...

I don't speak Swedish, but it seems like Jul means Xmas in this language
Correct, it does. It's the same word as the "Yule" in some English Christmas songs. It's Joulu in Finnish, so Maki knows too, but given the circumstances, a little humor is perhaps the best we can do, while waiting for all of the Cosmos to come around... (yes, feeble pun intended).
-
a little humor is perhaps the best we can do, while waiting
Yes, only that way we survive through this waiting.
I don't believe it's worst case case scenario, but not best case scenario either, something between those two.
Now with this new approach of deadlines, Planet have plenty of time to fulfill this

I don't mind waiting a bit longer. I mean: I long very much for it, but I'll wait as quality is important to me. Also, Dvorak ftw, which is why I still have to wait

It's official now; no Cosmo Christmas for some of us. Oh, well... kind of saw that coming from a mile away. Now, do we get them this year (decade)? Next update is supposed to come on Saturday or Sunday.
Actually this decade ends 31th of December 2020; there never was a year zero, so the first decade was from (and counting) year one and ended at the end of year 10, and so on. (Which also makes it difficult to count years from BC to AD...) So I guess it is a safe bet to say you will get it this decade (Otherwise you probably wont get it at all... But they now have confirmed that they HAVE "our" keys as well, and should start assembling, so should really hope/assume we will get them quite soon!)
And since I started going off topic with this: It also means the "big" celebration of new year 1999->2000 celebrated that we started the 2000nd year, and probably was a year "premature"...
-
I don't mind waiting a bit longer... Also, Dvorak...
I just need my keyboard to match my language... and, well, I admit I'm beginning to mind a bit, though there's little point in getting upset - they're trying as hard as they can. However, before attempting new major products, they'll have to find causes and make changes.
Actually this decade ends 31th of December 2020; there never was a year zero...
As long as we don't stray too far, going a tad OT while we wait should be fine, I think, so... there never really was a year one either, as our entire calendar is a retrofit. Strictly speaking, a decade is any period of 10 years, and a millennium any period of 1000 years, though the common use is to group year numbers differing by their last digit(s) only. But yeah, I catch the drift.

Cosmo Update #38 is out. It seems all the units are put together now. There will be QC going on all Monday, with - so they say - another update "very late tomorrow night".
-
Update 39 is out:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...59#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/17943959#/updates/all)
the first Swedish/Finnish, Russian, Dvorak, Czech, Norwegian/Danish and Italian Cosmos have been quality checked and are awaiting packaging
So I still don't know if MY Cosmo is even produced yet...
(And, no, I'm not "locked" either yet...)
-
...I still don't know if MY Cosmo is even produced yet... ...(And, no, I'm not "locked" either yet...)
Neither am I (from Sweden) and it is already evening in China. Perhaps Maki Jouni could add a Finnish perspective.
Update #39 also says they "will send a further pre-Christmas report during tomorrow with more details.". While I'm not sure how an update the day after Christmas can be "pre-", perhaps that will finally confirm that the production is actually done for real.
-
I'm locked (NL, Dvorak)
-
Neither am I, still placed...
Here is good signs on this campaign, 4 updates in couple of days. This is the right approach on communication. But still, they could be little bit more transparent with updates.
first Swedish/Finnish, Russian, Dvorak, Czech, Norwegian/Danish and Italian Cosmos have been quality checked
So just "first", not all of them? And does this mean that there is some rejected units and that mean those have to remade. And in worst case scenario this mean that subcontractor factory can remade these in few weeks, months or something. And after that next free space on assembly lines schedule might be in few weeks/months. And before that there is no full pallet of QC passed Cosmos, so there is no pallet at all to import to UK?
But if everything is Ok, everything will go smoothly, all units will pass QC, all units will wrapped and stagged to pallet after factorys holiday. After that there is transportation to HK and export customs at HK, transportation to UK, import customs at UK, transportation to distribution center, some handling at distribution center and finally last mile couriers. This is best case scenario and everyone can made short calculations when we can get our Perks if everything go smoothly...
On our new update…
Today, we locked over a hunderd....
So if pallet can fit about 300 Cosmo, there is 1/3 of pallet, ready for export? (300 unit per pallet is just my rough estimation). In other hand we don’t know for sure how many units is still at this so called "last European batch", is it approximately this 300, 500, 800 or something else. Depends which numbers we trying to ques our quantity: interviews or few weeks old updates....
And after all, retail sells started already before us. There might be one good point also for us who haven’t yet received our Perks. It feels bad, but it might have been necessary thing to do, that we all going to receive our perks eventually and PlanetComputers avoid bankrupt. If they sold approximately 1000 unit to Japanese retail sell, they will get approx couple of hundred thousand and they can produce also our Perks too. And by Black Friday /Cyber Monday sell, they might now funded recent shippings of perks we have seen on IndieGoGo comment section.
Few things that we can still hope, is that everything will go smoothly, QC will be decent and PlanetComputers will be solid company and we get ongoing support for our devices and might see wider range of devices in future… My personal faith is very fragile at the moment, sorry for that....
After all, Good point here is that there are at least more updates within couple of days. This is the right approach. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, God jul, Glædelig jul, Vrolijk kerstfeest, Hyvää Joulua... Over and out now for a while again….
-
I'm now locked. Swe/Fin keyboard.
I actually don't mind the wait all *that* much since there were bound to be teething issues anyway so I'll probably wait at least one more firmware update until turning this thing into my daily driver.
-
I'm now locked. Swe/Fin keyboard.
I actually don't mind the wait all *that* much since there were bound to be teething issues anyway so I'll probably wait at least one more firmware update until turning this thing into my daily driver.
So am I, today, at last, also with a Swe/Fin keyboard.
[Reworded for clarity] Though I really wanted this to be a cheerful day, as my Cosmo needs to basically already be my only phone, and this vacation is my last real opportunity in a while to, especially considering the time presumably required to reliably work around teething issues, get everything properly set up and moved over, missing Christmas even "by a few days" is not OK, and, since they won't ship our devices from HK in another 48h, how are they going to be delivered this year even?
-
how are they going to be delivered this year even?
I think it's not happening anytime soon. Have to hope that it's shipped out before Chinese new year....
My status is now locked also, somewhere between today and 24th December. Contribution Placed on December 2018 and Fin/Swe.
That we are now locked mean something, now our Cosmos might be at bottom of pile with shipping informations and waiting for all other of last European batch Cosmos will pass QC and will be also stacked to pile. Eventually pallet will be ready and will start chain of transportations and customs formalities. Eventually our Cosmos will be delivered by last mile carriers.
Have to hope there isn't any pieces anymore, that need to reproduce at some subcontractors, at any of rest devices. That might still cause that everyones Perks might be stuck, until every single remaining device is ready. But of course if there is some quality issues, then those parts of course have to reproduce, but in that case there should be also official update immediately when problems are spotted.

Next update coming Monday:
Planet Computers 4 hours ago
Project Owner
Happy New Year! There will be a new Cosmo backer update on Monday, when the team is back from holidays.
-
New update is up:
The factory also split the last delivery into two smaller deliveries and this has added to a further delay.
Finally, we now have nearly 400 Cosmo units ready to ship out. About 200 Cosmo units are on their way to Europe now and we will also continue shipping out the other 200 units from Hong Kong.
This mostly concerns the following keyboard layouts:
Czech keyboard
Dvorak keyboard
Finnish / Swedish keyboard
French keyboard
German keyboard
Hungarian keyboard
Italian keyboard
Icelandic keyboard
Danish / Norwegian keyboard
Polish keyboard
Portuguese keyboard
Russian (Cyrillic) keyboard
Spanish keyboard
Swiss keyboard
We are still awaiting certain keyboard layouts from the factory (including Croatian, Greek, Hebrew and Korean) .
Also, there is more stock (about 50 Cosmo units) ready at the factory awaiting inspection. Our person on the ground in China is on their way there shortly (Tuesday morning) to make further inspections. After the visit we will also have a clearer picture on the status of the remaining keyboard layouts.

New update is out
"Unfortunately, It has been stuck in transit and is now expected to reach the warehouse, after only clearing customs today"
"we now expect that these Cosmo perks to be shipped out on Thursday this week"
-
For those unfamiliar with the Cosmo "vulnerability" in Update #42, it was a backdoor, with full system privileges, and a way for any app, knowing how to ask, to silently get any Android permission, both - without ANY approval from, or knowledge by, Planet Computers - developed, hidden and maintained by the firmware update parter Digitime, which, when confronted, said it was for emergency patching, though there, apparently, are documented cases, where they have beed used (NOT on Planet Computers devices) to push intrusive adware. Since discovered and reported by Ash Wolf (thanks, again), it seems Digitime has removed all offending code and has, basically, dropped off the public internet.
-
Update #43 is out.
The European Cosmo shipment were booked into the UK warehouse on Friday. Shipping will start on Monday, and shipping notification will be sent out.

Hmm, I was just opening this topic to post that...
(And for your convenience, a link to the update...) (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/17943959#/updates/all)
And it also more or less states that if you are not locked by now, you will probably not be so until after the Chinese New Year is over in a few weeks... (They said they would be locking a few more that has already been produced, over the next days, but I'm not holding my breath. So seems I will still have a few days/weeks to wait??? And to think I was reluctant to back this, as I thought changing phone after about a year, if they had managed to deliver on the original delivery date, was a bit "premature". I usually keep my phones WAY longer than a that...)
-

I don't really think you need to DECODE anything to understand that, they stated it quite clearly!! The only small hope for me, and anyone else still not "locked", is that we might be among those few that already ARE produced, and will be "locked" in a few days...
-
Just a moment ago I received notification from DPD that your order has been dispatched...
Just few days anymore...

Yes, while DAN/NOR units were included in the last European shipment, perhaps yours will ship directly from HK, as Norway isn't in the EU. Well... only Planet knows. FWIW, I also got an "Your order from DPDLocal has been dispatched" e-mail, so for us whose units were in that shipment, actual deliveries seems to be happening now.

Update 44 is out:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...59#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator/x/17943959#/updates/all)
They have included a chart of fulfilled, locked and placed based on the month people contributed. So now I at least know I'm one of 19 people (out of 255) still only "placed" from contributing in December 2018. Not that it helps much, my device is still not even produced yet...

Did they state it quite clearly? Decoding failed as I got mine locked since then, so if it was clearly stated then it was a lie. In other news PC are starting to look for linux testers in comments (pasting here before it disappears 10 pages deep):

You've had a longer wait, but you did get yours for less. I had thought my current device would still be worth staying with, but unexpectedly it became clear I urgently needed to move off of it. I need one of the common configurations, but since I ordered mine late I expect to get mine near the end. Right now I don't have a time-frame either.
-
I backed on the day of the announcement (number 601), and received it in November last year. A friend, on seeing mine, backed it a week or so later, and got his early this month. We're both UK/UK, which is a common configuration. You might be lucky.

(Yes, the link will only post to this update until a new update arrives, but then it probably wont be interesting anymore anyway... )
Mostly the update just states that things are moving ahead with OSes and production of Cosmos (and a little about further delays related to the situation in China). So it seems I actually could be getting a Cosmo in the "not so distant" future...

Although the perks have been produced, the final 9% of Cosmos are still awaiting the clearing process or parts for the units to pass quality control at the factory. If you are in this final 9% of backers still waiting for your Cosmo perk, we are again incredibly sorry for this delay and please be assured that we will be pushing as hard as we have always done with the factory to get your unit to you. Any new parts required for these Cosmo units have been ordered with the latest production run which is underway.
(bolded mine)
I just hope Planet remembers that they're expected to fullfill all perks before the product being available to the general public. I don't know if that's a rule on Indiegogo, but there was a case where a set of playing cards on Kickstarter didn't fullfill all their backers, started selling them on Amazon, and got prosecuted. Or maybe I'm just grumpy, since my contribution has been locked since January.
-
Right now, I'm mainly hoping Planet Computers and its staff manages to stay alive. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't expect to hear anything from them until the "during March" firmware becomes available (in April, I'd guess). However, as the fifteen days (as of now) since Update #47, in COVID time, is quite a while, any sign of life from them, if only to confirm they're still there, would be nice. Has anyone heard from them after March 6, please share here.

Yes, indeed.....survival is foremost right now.
I emailed them on 3/10 and received a reply on 3/13.
So, know at least one person was alive as of 3/13.

Good to know. Thank you. We can probably presume the company as such was operating somewhat nominally at that date. If a significant number of employees would get ill, I suspect they'd close the office and, thus, wouldn't be replying to support e-mail at all, but that's me guessing.

Well, Ninji thought it would be neat, so he whipped together an emuator:
http://wuffs.org/blog/building-a-psion-emulator (http://wuffs.org/blog/building-a-psion-emulator)
It's slow and clunky at the moment, so more a proof of concept than anything really useful. Still very neat though.
If you want a (really slow) peek, he even made it run in a browser:
https://wuffs.org/WindEmu/index.html (https://wuffs.org/WindEmu/index.html)
I tried it in Firefox (68.6) on the Cosmo. Typing what's below took me about ten minutes. Still cool.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
While the emulator reasonably approximates the grey background of the Psion screen, it - thankfully - does not emulate the quite terrible contrast of said screen (anyone interested can download the above image and pull down the constrast by about 70%).

Thanks for sharing, Daniel!
Would be great if it got to point where it was usable...

Eh, in the past, they also used IndieGoGo updates to tell when a software update was due, so maybe they'll announce that this time as well.

The update is now out: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-co...or#/updates/all (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cosmo-communicator#/updates/all)
"London in lockdown!
In line with Government advice and wanting to do our best to ensure that our staff are not put at risk in any way, we have closed our London office and are working remotely. While this does not make the business less productive, it does have an impact on product repairs. Spare parts have started arriving from China, but we are currently unable to collect replacement parts at our office or to carry out repairs. We are actively working on an alternative solution, but at the moment repairs will be slower than we would like to complete. We would love to give you more concrete information but, as we are sure you are aware, the situation is changing daily.
If your device has been sent in for repair, we hope you can be understanding in these unprecedented times. We will ensure repairs are carried out and returned to you as soon as we physically can.
Production and shipping
More than 98 percent of our early backers have received their Cosmo perk and 91 percent of all backers in the first year (November 2018 to November 2019) have also received their perk. This leaves a small proportion of backers that have still not received their devices, including very recent Cosmo backers. In truth, we were not happy with the quality of a small number of devices and insisted on holding these back. We did not want to ship backers like you a product we were not happy with. This, combined with Chinese New Year and extended global supply chain issues as a result of coronavirus (covid-19), has caused an increased delay to our capability to deliver these perks at this time. We are chasing our factory to deliver as soon as possible. However, covid-19 has made firm delivery dates less certain.
As China is slowly relaxes the initial covid-19 lockdown - our ODM factory still has partial restrictions in place, but the supply chain involved in planned production is starting to engage. We expect and anticipate we will be able to ship the remaining Cosmo perks in April 2020 but I am sure you will appreciate that this is a continually developing situation where things are changing daily.
We promise we will keep you posted as soon as we have new information to share.
Development and Innovation
We continue to innovate and develop whilst Planet is in remote working mode:
Android firmware updates
We are about to release a new firmware update for the Cosmo. The main features of this release are:
* Modified bootloader so that the mobile radio modem and SIM cards will be recognised when booting into Linux, rooted Android and other non-Android partitions;
* Much improved battery consumption for Cosmo in idle (sleep) mode;
* Improved screen rotation function plus soft keyboard availability when Cosmo screen is used in portrait mode;
* Recent Android Security and other OS Updates;
* Notes app: dictation feature can now be controlled via Cover Display;
* Data app: database file export and import functions.
The new Cosmo Android firmware update (V20) will be available within the next few days. We hope that you will enjoy this firmware update. Most of the changes and additions in the latest Android firmware are a result of valuable backer feedback - we thank you for it.
More from us next week with more exciting news!
Stay safe! Be Well!
Best regards,
Team Cosmo"

And V20 update is also available
Indeed. Downloaded and installed. Now the security patch level is 5 January 2020, which, while still two moths behind, is a lot better than the previous May 2019 patch level.
Taking screenshots in portrait mode on V19 (on my device anyway) used to be scaled to half size, both ways, and end up in the upper right corner of an otherwise black screen-sized image. On V20, portrait mode screenshots aren't scaled vertically, but they're still shrunk to half size horizontally, and now ends up as the right half of an otherwise black screen-sized image, so it appears they tried to fix it, but didn't completely manage to solve it. Oh, well, if they only managed to significantly reduce the standby power draw, I'm very pleased.
Edit: Notes on V20, so far:- None of the fingerprints I registered earlier worked. They were still there, just not recognized. I solved the issue by removing them and registering the same actual fingers again.
- When unlocking the device, Planet Voice Assistant briefly shows a seemingly pointless (and harmless) notification.

Same notes here. The latter was 'fixed' by disabling the Planet Voice Assistant app, I don't like or use voice assistance anyway.

Too late for me... So far... - I'm getting spurious notifications from Gemini Voice Assistant (which I could disable) and Airmail (which I'm using) when unlocking the device. Meh...
- Even with the same finger registered three times, my success rate is below usable. It seems I'll have to rely on a password for a while. Boo.[/s]
- In flight mode, with the CoDi off, my Cosmo made it through the night on 3% battery (going from 73 to 70). That's on par with my Gemini. Yay!
- Portrait mode screenshots still gets mangled, just differently. Sigh...
Still, if the battery life improvement remains consistent with last night, I'll still be glad I updated.
Edit: A reboot fixed my fingerprint issue.

When yet another fingerprint rescan didn't help, on a whim, I tried rebooting the device, and, for whatever reason, I seem to be getting a reasonable success rate again, and has thus been able to reinstate a not-silly-short password. Oh well... all good then, I suppose. Sorry for the noise.

It seems to be when I've charged my Cosmo and unplugged that then, the fingerprints don't get recognised.
If I then cleanly restart, fingerprints work again.
One big frustration is I could access my Business bank before using fingerprint at home, but now have to go in to office to retrieve s dongle because I have to log in with double authentification using the dongle once more.
I'm trying to pay self-employed tutors so they're not short, but what was once an easy process, us being affected at this inopportune time by the faulty update.
Guess I should have waited...

I guess I can live a few weeks with V20 since it appears to be working.
Although, frankly, if they do not have the update ready by May 8, *and* bring security level to at least February 2020 level (to address Bluefrag vulnerability) I'll ask Indiegogo to refund my Astroslide contribution, no matter that it's supposed to be lot cheaper than getting it at retail. It's become clear that long-term support is Planet's most problematic area. Combined with the other threats (Brexit, second or third wave of COVID19), the risks are just starting to sound too great.
I more or less hoped V22 to land this week with the announcement...
3 weeks to go..

Planet made it very clear that Google needs to re-certify the firmware. So while V20 was a mistake on Planet's behalf for some, you can't blame the delay on V22 on Planet as they need to wait for Google's approval.
-
As we wait for the update, a question about our de-certified V21. I copied and saved my google-playstore-installed apks to an sd card. One of those apks is Netflix, which is unavailable to V21. If I did a factory reset on my unrooted Cosmo, would the downloaded netflix apk install? Or would I get certification errors, etc?

It's up, sadly no news about linux

New update is out
Cosmo Android V22 firmware
We are still testing the V22 firmware for remaning issues.
We will have a further update on this by the end of this week.
Linux Update
We have not updated you on Linux for a while, but we have also been working in the background on some features.
We are working on the following features:
* Suspend and Resume - on open / close
* Initial Voice Call telephony support
Both have now been implemented and are being tested.
Thought we signed up for the testing, but still hyped

These random reboots are killing me so fingers crossed...
I noticed that my device does boot if I do something like play music (e.g. https://livetaajuus.fi/radio/radio-rock/ (https://livetaajuus.fi/radio/radio-rock/) ) over Internet for several hours.
To me this sounds like a memory leak.
Anyway, I posted a question about what's the update process/cycle will be from now on after they finally get the V22 out of the door - but most likely there will be no response.
