Go to hsn.com, search for item 684027, \"Pretec 802.11b Wireless PDA Card with PC Adapter\" ($29.64), proceed to checkout, add coupon 130004 ($15 off $20, exp. 04/30/04), with $5.95 S&H ends up at $20.59
Please note that I found this myself and AFAIK it is not posted on any of the usual deal boards. I suggest we keep quiet about it until all ZUG members that want one got into the deal.
-
Thanks for the tip, I just ordered 2. I already have a Socket card, but CF WiFi cards go for $30 as a minimum on Ebay. It\'s pretty common to see one go for $40.
-
Zazz, Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered 1. I have a nice back up for my Linksys.
Sweet!!!
-
Cool the pretec company seems to be well connected with the japanese market which made it possible for them to make their products compatible with the zauruses
-
Yeah, I bought my pretec card in Europs and the packing stated it\'s compatability with the Zaurus. I thought this was nice :-)
Still, we don\'t such prices as at hsn.com ;-)
-
Got one too. This is great. Even on Ebay, I haven\'t been able to get it <$35 in the past week.
Anyone know about the power usage of this bad boy?
-
Thanks! Although I already have two wifi cards, I could not resist

proceed to checkout, add coupon 130004 ($15 off $20, exp. 04/30/04),
Hmm. Was this coupon just for you, or for a specific group of shoppers? HSN says that \"according to our records, you are not allowed to use this coupon.\" Still might be a pretty good deal, though--about $38 shipped...
Any word on power draw...?
-
Here is the power draw:
Transmit: < 370mA
Receive: < 250mA
Standby:< 20mA
(from: http://www.pretec.com/index2/product/Mobil...ls/802_11b.htm) (http://www.pretec.com/index2/product/Mobile_peripherals/802_11b.htm))
For some other comparisons:
http://www.techgroup21.com/subpage.asp?subnavID=102 (http://www.techgroup21.com/subpage.asp?subnavID=102)
A quick comparison is:
Socket WL6000-320 / $128 Amazon.com
Idle: < 20 mA
Transmit: 170-280 mA
http://www.socketcom.com/product/WL6000-320.asp (http://www.socketcom.com/product/WL6000-320.asp)
Linksys WCF12 / $53 Buy.com
Idle: ???
Transmit: 250 mA

I hope this helps.

I think this coupon is for the first time customers only...

That coupon up top expired here is a new one for first time buyers, I just picked this thing up for 20.59 including shipping !!
Thanks folks
Use coupon code 415001. New customer only
-
I am amazed it is still in stock. This means the information has not yet leaked from this board. Let\'s keep it that way so that more Zauren get cheap wifi...
-
ok, just ordered... only 1, though... yes, coupon still worked.

Will this work with a 5600 right out of the box?
Russ
-
I just ordered one for myself $20.59 is the grand total. Thanks guys!
-
Thanks for the tip. I just got mine today. It worked on my 5600 right out of the box.
-
Good card, uses prism 2.5 chipset. You probably want to upgrade the firmware and use hostapi driver with it.

received mine... pulled my dlink 660w, plugged in the pretec... and was back online in 2 or 3 seconds.

incredible find! just bought one. thanks! and coupon code 415001 still works.
-
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! coupon still works. Amazing!
-
Thank you from me too! ;-) Why didn\'t I see this _before_ I bought the Linksys?....
-
the card is pretty good. I already had two, so I gave it to a friend. (He just got his Z recently).
-
Thank you! The cupon (415001) still works.
Cable Internet anyware in my house.
-
This card is still there and the price is still great. However, the coupon doesn't work anymore. Don't despair though! I spent about 3 minutes googling for HSN coupon and found the same thing with a different number that still worked.
I got the card a couple of days ago. It works great, though it sticks out kind of far.
-
That coupon code is expired also now... Anyone know a newer one?

I love you long time....Thanks for posting that coupon. Just ordered mine for $20.59 shipped. Darn Netgear card died on me.

Just ordered one. coupon still works!!
-
If anybody's interested, the new code should be 171520.
-
I don't understand all that about power usage - does that mean that this card is a power hog? Thanks.
-
I don't like this card at all; it is very cheap in terms of quality. Mine worked for a few months and then stopped working. I sent it back to Pretec and they told me it still worked. They did agree to send me a replacement card, however. It's actually due in today.
-
Interesting, I have had the exact opposite experience. If you want to see a cheap card look at the Linksys WCF12. I was unable to keep a decent signal after 30 minutes with the WCF12, but with the Pretec I have been connected for many hours without a problem. YMMV
-
Hi,
(Please dun flame or laugh) Does the Pretec work with NEC MobilePro 790? It uses the MIPS chipset and runs Wince 3.0.
Thanks!
-
My Pretec card just showed up yesterday. Put it in the Z, and it absolutley won't connect to anything. I've tried my AP at home, and 3 seperate ones at my office. I took the thing out and put it in a laptop - same deal. Grabbed a coworkers zaurus (running OZ3.2) and it works just fine there. <sigh>
Anyone know where you can get OZ3.2? The openzaurus site only seems to have the more current versions, which I couldn't get this to work under.
thanks!
-r
-
What ROM are you running? Mine worked fine with Cacko out of the box.
-
I tried it under sharp 3.1, Kompany rom 1.0, and the most recent OZ. I even plugged it in to the PCMCIA adapter it came with, and put it in an XP laptop, and it wouldn't connect there either. I would just say it was defective and return it, but it works 100% on my coworkers OZ3.2. Go figure.
-
Oh, and I also made sure it wasn't my Z being busted, because I grabbed another coworkers linksys wireless CF card, and it worked just fine everywhere.
-
Is there another discount code on this one?
-
Just grabbed one of these cards, for $20.xx
New coupon code for new customers: 309021
-
309021 is valid until January 31, 2005. After that (valid until February 31, 2005) the code will be 111504.
-
Woohoo! Just picked up one of these buggers! It works

Doh...! I got mine between the coupon codes... .grrr.....
They work on my Sharp 3.10 ROMS. I've installed Wellenreiter II, following the instructions in the Wiki. However, when it comes time to Configure it doesn't find /dev/eth0. I notice that one of the links in the Wiki is broken (the one that is supposed to help you in the configure portion) so I can't seem to get the last part taken care of. Every time I start the sniffer it says "Card isn't configured". I added the Pretec to the wlan-ng.conf file as described for "unknown" CF cards in the Wiki, but no love there. I'd like to use WRII as it installs to SD without complaining about needing to be in main memory.
As long as I'm whining.... any good pointers on firewalling the Z while I'm out in the wooly WIFI lands? I'm not convinced the IPSEC/Freeswan stuff is what I need as I'm not planning on doing any VPN at the moment.
-
My Netgear card broke last week after 1.5 years of use.
I just got a new Pretec, I hope these 20 bucks will also last at least 1.5 years :-)
Thanks for the coupon!!!!
Mike
PS: Does anyone have this card working with pdaXrom RC8 ?
-
I just got mine for around $23 total using the last coupon number mentioned. I'm running OZ 3.5.2 and so far it works great!
-
I just ordered mines for 22.05
used the last coupon mentioned.
-
Seems like there are new coupons available. And the item is also still in stock. New coupons are for new customers only (but what keeps you from opening a new account ). Enjoy.

Thanks. I received mine. It works with c3000.
[However, my old lower power Socket doesn't ] EDIT: I have followed instructions on this website and now Socket is back in action!
-
Maybe someone will send few of them to Europe?
-

Wow, i found this thread just in time! My Dlink 660W died after a few months of usage (there was a bad connection somewhere- i popped off the cover and by moving the antenna bit i could connect, but it was hard to keep it connected), and i was shocked to see how much new CF wireless cards are (got this one with my Z). So this is a pleasant surprise!
As of my purchase, there is only one left in stock...
$20.59. Sweet.
-
HSN's out of stock for this now, but just in case, here's a code for between 2/15/2005 and 5/31/2005: "To save $15, refer to coupon code #531105"
-
Hmm it seems that HSN can't find this item anymore.
-
I have one for sale if anyone is interested. Please see my post in "For Sale / Wanted" forum. It's lightly used (maybe for a week or so), but works great. I've updated its firmware to primary=1.1.1 and station=1.7.4 too.
