Title: Will there be security updates on Android?
Post by: tpp on September 23, 2019, 09:52:56 pm
My device Gemini PDA has December 2018 Android security patch level. I do not feel secure using it. Will Gemini PDA receive Android security updates?

If your version of Android is from December 2018, then it HAS ALREADY had update(s) -- the Gemini was released half a year before that!

The latest version is Android 8 from May 2019, so you should be able to upgrade to that, either through the built-in Firmware Update, or by downloading it from Planet's support site.

Of course, it would be nice if updates were a bit more timely, but they do happen.

@gidds I am running the May 2019 version. this is what May 2019 version reports in About phone. So from my understanding, despite being released in May 2019, it doesn't contain any 2019 Android security patches.

PC doesn't reply to my e-mails sadly. I don't know where else to share my concerns. I'm personally used to rom updates including latest security patches every month, that's what I get on my other smartphone. At least every 6 months would be nice for Gemini, I think. Maybe I'm expecting too much, I don't have much experience with different smartphones.

Most phones seem to get security updates every 3 months, I wish we could also get them at least that often. Google's Project Mainline is supposed to get this fixed, although it will run only on Android 10: https://www.howtogeek.com/413714/what-is-an...y-phone-get-it/ (https://www.howtogeek.com/413714/what-is-android%E2%80%99s-project-mainline-and-when-will-my-phone-get-it/)

Any news about this? It's December already, will we get Android 9 (or at least Android 8.1 security updates) next year, or should I give up?
