Received this message last week. So... this update is coming this week.
Cosmo V22 firmware
We have been testing the V22 Android firmware for Cosmo. We have received the updated GMS approval from Google. We have also updated the security patches up to early April. We will continue testing and we hope to release the new version next week.
We strongly recommend to wait for the V22 version, but if you wish to revert to the V19 firmware we have provided a manual process for this. YOU WILL LOSE YOUR DATA IF YOU FOLLOW THIS PROCESS, so we are recommending to wait until next week. The V19 firmware downgrade is at the following link: http://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/C...al_Installation (http://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/Cosmo_Android_Firmware_Manual_Installation)
More from us next week on both production and firmware.
Best regards,
Team Cosmo

@Evandro there are still some issues to resolve that we found in testing. We will send a further update on this top later this week.
So it probably won't be coming. I guess it's good that they are doing better testing this time around.

where do you get this information? i feel left out!

where do you get this information? i feel left out!
It's in the comments at Indiegogo. And a good thing they made it too, because otherwise I would have asked for a refund for the Astro.
-
is there a good way to keep on top of them? reading comments there seems like trying to drink from a firehose... very unorganized and info gets washed away to the depths fast.

I receive emails from Planet for each of their updates. It includes the content of the update in the email.
Can't recall if I signed up for them through the IndieGoGo campaign page or as I backer of their campaigns I automatically receive them.
As for keeping up with all the backer comments and the occasional Planet comment posted, only way I see, is to periodically, like every few days, read through the comments posted. Like you say, it's a mess there, not like here where you can find things by topic.

Received this today
Cosmo Android V22 firmware
We are still testing the V22 firmware for remaning issues.
We will have a further update on this by the end of this week.
Linux Update
We have not updated you on Linux for a while, but we have also been working in the background on some features.
We are working on the following features:
* Suspend and Resume - on open / close
* Initial Voice Call telephony support
Both have now been implemented and are being tested.

I wish PlanetC would work on features people want instead of whatever this is. What good is having telephony if linux suspends when it is closed? Won't we miss all calls, texts, messages, etc.? Is suspend / resume on open/close a useful feature?
I must be missing something.

its probably useful for people who dont intend to use this as a phone, which seems to be a suprising amount of people based on comments here and other sites. but i agree... netwrok connectivity is part of feature 0 for a modern computing device. need that first.

From the latest update, issued on 20/May:
[blockquote]Android Firmware – V22 firmware update
We now have a release candidate V22 firmware version and if all is well with the OTA updates we will release it withing the next week. Thank you for waiting for this firmware update.[/blockquote]
So if we're REALLY lucky it should drop some time on or after Monday 25th

They changed their versioning scheme, so every version number now represents the year it'll be released in. So V22 will come in 2022, V23 in 2023, etc.

The last 2 firmware updates were immature at best, and the original OTA method was compromised: I think it's probably for the best if they make the effort to get this one right...

V22 Android Firmware
We have found a further kernel error during the final tests of the V22 firmware candidate release, so we are looking to repeat this error and fix it before releasing V22. Otherwise the release is performing well with much improved battery consumption, new security patches and the new Google GMS certificate.

I have to wonder what exactly they have that requires coding on the kernel. Only thing I can think of is the possible connection to CoDi requiring a kernel driver (instead of userspace driver) if there's some special bus between CoDi and the primary device.
I really wish they'd open up the architecture a bit...

Every manufacturer uses their own modified kernel, Planet included. What exactly they all modify, I dunno. But they are all modifying them in some way (how great would it be if all smartphones could run Linux Mainline?), so they have to code on it and fix errors.

Why would not they open architecture completely? This is a device that supposed to support linux without android. Where is this linux community they keep referring to. It is more like secret society. Nothing like open source community

Where or who is this community?
Frankly, I have no idea.
I've tried to talk to Planet via their hello@planetcom e-mail, via the support feedback form, on indiegogo postings and the *only* time I got a reply was when I threatened to get a refund for my Astro contribution. This forum appears to be the closest thing to such a thing as a community.

I'm afraid that this forum, geminipda group on telegram and matrix is all there is (about 100 people total). You can get telephony support with
apt update
apt upgrade
apt install dialer-app ofono ofono-ril-binder-plugin pulseaudio-module-droid-hidl audiosystem-passthrough
For the suspend newer kernel is needed (http://gemian-buster.thinkglobally.org/jenkins/job/cosmo-linux-kernel-4.4-binaries/lastBuild/architecture=arm64,distribution=buster/ one from here should work, though I managed to brick my wifi connectivity doing that so it's risky, had to reinstall gemian, but used newer rootfs img file from here: http://gemian-buster.thinkglobally.org/jen...20-05-08.img.gz (http://gemian-buster.thinkglobally.org/jenkins/job/gemian-rootfs-cosmocom-kde-plasma/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/gemian-cosmocom-kde-plasma-2020-05-08.img.gz) (just replacing the img file in the customos installer folder on sdcard) after which installing the kernel worked (or maybe it was already included, uname -r gives the same version so hard to tell)) with it:
apt install gemian-lock repowerd xss-lock
The newer rootfs after update/upgrade included both though from the get go, so might not even need to manually install them

This is what PC told us when releasing v20 :
We are about to release a new firmware update for the Cosmo. The main features of this release are:
* Modified bootloader so that the mobile radio modem and SIM cards will be recognised when booting into Linux, rooted Android and other non-Android partitions;

OK. Thank you. But telephony with v19 didn' t work at least for me. ( no sim card detected in linux ) . I will wait for v22 and will post results here later ( I think the bootloader must be changed ) . Suspend works with the mentioned kernel and also with my compiled kernel with changes from this commit ( https://github.com/gemian/cosmo-linux-kerne...2467696b53bcff2 (https://github.com/gemian/cosmo-linux-kernel-4.4/commit/4bfa92d83f2e13a284ce1dd2f2467696b53bcff2) ). Even if the new FW would be coming today, I wouldn't dare to install it for another week. I'll wait for others to beta test it first.
The brown paperbag release that was V20 had the problems become apparent on forums & elsewhere only after more than 5 days or so. I waited 3 days before installing that upgrade, but that was clearly too short of a wait.
-
I would install it straight away, it seems less and less stable every day anyway so I don't see I have anything to lose!
The bit it seems to struggle with most is phone calls and I guess the problem for me is it is a phone!!
-

Same here: V20 is getting less and less stable, so I don't mind installing V22 straight away. They tested it for a while now, so I'm confident that even in a worst scenario, it's not any worse than V20.
-
I concur--other than the phone exploding against my face, V22 can't make it worse.

Cosmo Communicator Campaign - Week 81
Dear Cosmo backers!
Cosmo 2nd Production and Shipping
This is a short update to say that the second batch of Cosmo Communicators from the 2nd production run has reached our Hong Kong warehouse this morning.
We will start shipping the remaining Cosmo perks to non-European destinations directly from Hong Kong on Monday and we will also be sending and importing the European consignment to our UK warehouse.
More from us next week...

Good News : I think next week the v22 will be available.

@Evandro We are still checking one issue. More on V22 next week, hopefully release next week.
-
I again posted my request for more info on whether they have actually managed to get their act together on the release process. Taking time on V22 is one thing, but I'd really hope that they will start building images with upstream security patches included whenever Google does it.
Probably not going to get a response.

I think I will install it only because I want linux to recognize the sim card .

Well, this thread was started more than month ago, as well as initial announcement by the company that prompted it.
This is really embarrassing for the company, and probably indicative of some serious internal problems: no sane company would knowingly risk getting into such an embarrassing situation by making announcement they could not fulfill for more than a month.
I bet they are really deprived of software development resources. If such problem just developed during this period (maybe, key personnel left - either for good, or internally to another project), then I would be very skeptical and cautious with respect to the quality of this release, whenever it will finally materialize
-

Eh, AFAIK, they only had a few people working on the software to begin with. So that team was never big.
-
I'd be very surprised if it's more than 2, maybe 3 people on software....
And from what I can tell, I think the whole company is probably less than 10 people....
Think Planet is literally 'operating on a shoestring' (ie, under-capitalized...) and trying to 'bootstrap' themselves into a larger company.
Having run my own business in the past, this a very difficult road to take, if you want to be able to scale up to have more production and sales volume and efficiencies therein, and be able to afford adequate support resources, etc. Think Planet is in a very difficult position and unless they have a 'big hit' in the marketplace, they will find themselves unable to get out of this position, unless a bigger company buys them out.
Wish Planet all the best though....
Meanwhile, let's hope we see a good v22 released soon!
Just my 2 cents....

The problem I mostly have with them is the complete lack of transparency.
I shouldn't have to go through sites like this https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/10468629 (https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/10468629) to get info on their operations and size.
I wouldn't mind if they would *tell* us, even with something short. Just a post from one of the devs on twitter (or forum here) would be nice. "Worked on kernel bug, crashes when sending SMS and using O2 network" or something similar at the end of the day would at least give the impression that they are doing something.
As such, I'm actually not *that* worried about Astroslide, because it has no CoDi and that many "special" bits - it should be much more feasible to run something like Replicant on it if Planet's own software fails to work properly.

Walking to another week without update. Regrettable ...

It's not gonna happen anymore, guys. Even I, known as the Planet Defender and some other similar names (esp. on Indiegogo) have lost faith that this update will ever come.

There's a CODI update come out apparently, 1.1.1.14. Date on that version is 17th of June.
http://fota.planetcom.co.uk/stm32flash/cos...re_versions.txt (http://fota.planetcom.co.uk/stm32flash/cosmo_stm32_firmware_versions.txt)
CoDI display assistant doesn't want to update yet, since the firmware file clearly shows it's interoperating only with V22.
Maybe it actually *exists* somewhere...

Thank you.
Glad to hear this.
All the evidence is that these things are being worked on. But only by one or two people at most, and seemingly in their spare time. And so it takes much longer than it might with more enthusiasts. I can't understand why a space hasn't been opened up where enthusiasts could contribute. (And ideally example kit seeded out there for free to people with an interest and a proven background in working on this sort of port—I suppose I'm thinking of the Linux side of things. So far as I can tell the Android side was intended to be completed by a company under contract.)

There's a CODI update come out apparently, 1.1.1.14. Date on that version is 17th of June.

CoDI display assistant doesn't want to update yet, since the firmware file clearly shows it's interoperating only with V22.
Maybe it actually *exists* somewhere...
Thank you.
Glad to hear this.
Finally : From PC today.
We will finally release V22 Android firmware early next week, most likely on Monday.
The V22 took a lot longer than expected, because we had to track down an issue that was causing intermittent device reboots when the power saving mechanism was invoked during serial communication between Android and the cover display.
We finally managed to identify the actual cause of the problem with the help of MediaTek HQ in Taiwan and we have implemented a solution that keeps the power save characteristics, whilst also preserving communication with the cover display.
The V22 firmware also solves issues with eSIM communication in recent Android firmware versions.
The cover display firmware will also need to be updated for Cosmo to function as expected. You will need to have the new V22 Android firmware running with the new V1.1.1.14 version of the CoDi firmware, also to be released on Monday.
Direct updates will be available for the following Cosmo Android firmware: from V19 to V22, from V20 to V22, and from V21 to V22.

A question:
Why they don' t update Today or tomorrow if everything is fine now ? And only possibly on Monday ?
I hope this time the date is correct and we don' t wait a long time again.
Let' s see.

Probably because they need to jump through some hoops to get it deployed via Digitime's OTA update service. There was still no word on their supposed roll-your-own replacement. The battery saving and getting rid of reboots is good, but I hope those are not the ONLY issues addressed. It has been 3 months since V20/21...

OK. Thank you for the information.

I would hazard a guess it coincides with them returning to their London office.....
Over excitement about firmware upgrades in these rather troubled times are comical if nothing else!

Most likely because the update is ready, but they still need the weekend to test the OTA deployment. Normally, companies achieve that by slowly rolling out OTA's to its users, which isn't always a good thing (see the Xioami bricked boots from earlier this year, for example). But Planet always tests internally and then rolls out en masse, or at least with the Cosmo (I've never had a Gemini PDA, so I don't know if their tactic was different back then).

Thank you so much for the explanation.
