has there been any progress on getting kali to run on a cosmo? has anyone gotten it to work?

I am not aware about native Kali ports but Kali NetHunter installed from Magisk is the smoothest way to get Linux chroot on Android

Nethunter doesn't support external wifi devices with the original android kernel.
