My 5600 should be here on Friday, and I am looking to buy some storage for it. I have some CF memory already, but I will also be needing wireless capability which means the CF slot will be used up and the extra storage will have to be SD.
I want at least 512Mb, mainly for storing MP3s, but the whole Zaurus/SD thing seems a bit of a minefield, so I\'m hoping for some guidance. I\'ve searched the forums to death but can\'t seem to find a real consensus on what works and what doesn\'t.
Are the Zaurus/SD problems mainly limited to the 5500, or is the 5600 equally prone?
Are there any users who have used 512Mb SD cards with no transfer/suspend problems, and sufficient memory bandwidth to play MP3s and run the odd application from SD? If so, what brands of SD are you using?
I have about £100 to spend on a 512 SD card, which puts me in the market for Sandisk Ultra2 cards, PNY, Viking and PQI. Has anyone used any of these cards without problems?
Sandisk seem to have problems relating to poor SD controllers- are these symptoms likely to carry over to the new UltraII cards? I know the Zaurus will not make use of the extra speed, but I will transfer MP3s daily to the card using a USB2 reader attached to my PC, so the extra speed would be useful, but Zaurus compatibility is most important....
Any suggestions, ideas or experiences would be most welcome,
Ithankyou
Corin.

I\'m interested too, I will receive my Z 5600 (pxa-255) on friday too and I have the same wonders (wich wifi, wich sd) !

Here are some compatibility list:
http://zaurus.knightfire.com/ (http://zaurus.knightfire.com/)
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...ity_And_Support (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Compatibility_And_Support)
I\'ve found that everything that works on my 5500 works on my 5600. I say this because the list mostly refers to 5500.

I have had good experiences with Viking in general. I recently got a Viking 512MB SD card, but haven\'t really put it through its paces yet. I\'ll try loading it up tonight with music and see how it does. I\'ll also try to remember to get more specific info about the card.

I\'ve got Viking 256M (formated to ext2) since 6 months now and no problem so far
-
Thanks guys, I look forward to your findings
My 5600 just arrived from the \'States this morning, very nice, but it has a PXA250 so today I\'ll mostly be flashing my Zaurus!
-
I\'m running the Viking SD512M with the original formatting. I scp\'d a bunch of MP3s and running them with the Sharp Media Player works just fine. Of course, I just realized that I forgot to look at the bit-rate of the MP3s so that might not help much. (They were free MP3s from one of the sites that showcases unknown artists so it\'s possible they were very low bit rate.) Maybe I\"ll try yet again with some ripped from my own CDs at high bit-rates and report back.

I use lexar with no problems

I have been using 256MB SD from Hagiwara Sys-Ccom, http://www.hscus.com/products/products.htm (http://www.hscus.com/products/products.htm), Made in Japan, since 09/2003 with my SL-5600 with original Sharp ROM Version 1.32.
-
How about any non-memory SD cards? Are all non-memory SD cards SDIO? Are there any non-SDIO wireless cards?
-
Lexar 256 meg SD card. Have been using for about a week, I\'ve transferred large files and mounted and used a loopback filesystem, all without a single error or problem so far on my 6000L. Knock on wood.
I believe there might be an updated 5600 driver available for download that I think I remember seeing. I had problems with an MMC card on my 5600 that I haven\'t seen on the 6000 (although I haven\'t used it enough to be sure).
-
Only card I have ever had problems with is a 128MB SanDisk card in my 5600 however it works perfect in my 5500.
-
I dont really have any serious problems with my cards. Only problem I have encountered is with my Ambicom not able to be ejected or it not allowing me to switch to scheme CardResume. Other than that my kingston memory card works great, even when I use the 8mb swapfile.
-
Ambicom
Ambicom? Are you talking about a memory card or a wireless card?
-
My wireless card.
-
ChrisZaurus, So you ARE able to get an Ambicom SD Wireless card working on the Zaurus? I didn\'t think anyone had gotten anything, other than flat memory, working on the SD slots of their Zauri. Tell me more!

ChrisZaurus, So you ARE able to get an Ambicom SD Wireless card working on the Zaurus? I didn\'t think anyone had gotten anything, other than flat memory, working on the SD slots of their Zauri. Tell me more!
Nope.
It\'s an ambicom wifi CF card (check his .sig).
Without someone willing to send mega-bucks to the SD consortium
for proprietary API specs (and willing to keep those APIs secret)
we\'re never going to see any SDIO devices on any Zaurii.
Additionally, some models of Zaurus don\'t even have SDIO leads
brought out to the card connectors - it\'s rumored that some do,
but even that isn\'t conclusive.
possibly there\'s some hope that a commercial vendor will research which models have hardware support, and which don\'t, and sell a driver/card bundle that works, but it seems like a lot of effort and expense on their part, for a very small market.
What would be *the* killer SD device, were it possible?
Wifi? video out? gps? something else?
If we\'re lucky, we may only get one shot.
-
Thanks. =) (Sorry I missed his sig)
I\'d say \"wifi\", but it seems like all future Zauri will come with Wifi built in. After Wifi, I\'d say \"Video out\".

No problem with the 5600. I just got it a few weeks ago and pretty much
use it to keep my server info and passwords handy. Popped in the SD card and no problems. It may seem there was apermission problem but nothing major.
-
Actually my understanding was that the permission problem is a symptom of card incompatibility, i.e. the card goes \"read only\" and needs to be dismounted, ejected and reinserted.
