Title: Software for the SL-6000
Post by: piggity on May 02, 2004, 01:01:40 pm
Hey,

Someone started a similar thread, but what I am really trying to get at is of all the software out there, what is and isn\'t working for the SL-6000.  I\'ll start this out.

Works
- tkcExplorerC7xx
- kismit (with instructions from: http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...the%20SL-6000L) (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=How%20to%20run%20Kismet%20on%20the%20SL-6000L))
- BlueZ drivers (works for Ambicom card, but not the Socket revG card)
- tkcEditorC7xx

Doesn\'t Work (at least for me)
kino2 (install, but will not play video)
qkonsole 9.3 (works, but not in vga mode)
tkcVideo

I think this is a good idea.  I would like to know what works and what doesn\'t without having to waste the time experimenting.  My experience is:

Works
- qkconsole ( with the limitations noted )
- JustReader ( but the number of formats is very limited, won\'t rotate )

Doesn\'t work
- kismet ( enough others have had success I must have screwed it up, I\'ll try again )
- kino2 ( installed but that\'s about it )
- opie-reader ( installed; worked for a while; then hung; had to reset to uninstall )
- qpdf2 ( installed; ran; but test leaves trask all over the screen )

I still have a Socket bluetooth card I can\'t use; anyone have any luck with that yet?

Qpdf2 is working fine for me.   The exact package I installed was qpdf2_no-render-2.2.1-20040217_arm.ipk.  There are several other versions available for download which I didn\'t try.  I even got it to work in 640x480 mode by editing the desktop icon shortcut.

The qpdf2 I loaded was qpdf2_2.00-20030725_arm.ipk.  I will try the other one.

Can you explain what you changed on the desktop icon to get 640x480 mode?

Thanks

I just copied the Display line from the built-in apps and pasted it into the Qpdf file.  All the desktop icons are in /home/QtPalmtop/apps/Applications.  The line looks like this:
Display=640x480,144dpi,480x640,144dpi

edit:  There\'s an easier way to do this.  If you tap and hold the icon, a screen comes up where you can disable the magnification.

:? Hey,

Has anyone gotten nethack to work on their 6K? I downloaded and installed it and the sound file. The program opens and presents the first screen. When I hit play it just dies (disappears back to launcher screen). Any hints?

TIA

SafeDee version 2.0.2 works on the 6000 in both portrait and landscape modes.
If you are running an earlier version of SafeDee, V2.02 is, as always, a free upgrade.

Qconsole works fine in 640x480 mode (fonts are tiny of course) if you uncheck \"run magnified\".
It doesnt handle a suspend very well if you su to root, but that problem appears on the 5600 as well.

to get nethack to work

chown zaurus -R /home/QtPalmtop/games/lib/nethackdir/nethackdir

you also need to edit the nethack.cnf and change

QT_FONTSIZE=tiny
QT_TILEWIDTH=8
QT_TILEHEIGHT=11

to

QT_FONTSIZE=large
QT_TILEWIDTH=32
QT_TILEHEIGHT=32

so its not so small

I am now half way there - the drivers work but the connection applet only offers the Wireless and although I can force the issue by connecting and then disconnecting the wireless, the scripts still fail (and I have checked them against my 5500). Any ideas on how to debug these scripts?

Works for me:
Dr Z Video Player VGA
Petite Peinture
Kismet
Bluez
Nano
Mighty Charms
tkcRace
Snails
tkcGallery
ZEditor
Zlines
SafeDee
qpdf2

Didn\'t work:
tkcVideo

Much better compatability than I expected. Other than tkcVideo, all my C7xx software works, and so do SL5xxx that are C7xx friendly.

Iwong & others

I have been flailing about trying to get kismet to work, yet to no avail.
Iwong referenced a guide - where can it be found?

The application will run from both the console and the gui, but never finds anything, not even my own network at home.

Could it be the source setting in the kismet.conf file?

Thanks for the instructions for kismet...

... i do have one question though, its working from the terminal but how do I set kismet-qt to run as root ? it would be nice if that worked too.

Oh.. one other thing, is anyone else having problems with the adduser command ?

I have perfectly working on my SL-6000L:
QPDF2
FreeNote
KO/PI

About the Socket Bluetooth card rev.G:
I finally got it working following some instructions found on this forum:
- simply install the latest Bluez package + the CSR extra package
- either delete or move away the file /etc/pcmcia/bm3.conf and maybe also the directory /etc/pcmcia/bm3
- restart pcmcia and restart bluetooth
- Socket rev G is now working (I tested dialup connection through a Sony Ericsson Z600 mobile phone,  hcitool scan, sdptool browse, everything OK!)
But I would like to install the openobex command-line utilities such as irobex_palm3 to beam files... anyone knows where I could get them?

This is what I have been able to get to work:

Qpdf2 (qpdf2_no-render-2.2.1-20040217_arm.ipk)
Opie-Reader

Both work in VGA mode, and quite well, although Qpdf2 can be a little slow in rendering documents with complex graphics.

Not much, (yet) but, hey, it is only 24 hours I have owned my SL-6000L....

Now, on to a serious challenge: find a video player that can stream RealPlayer and Windows Media Player files.........

Great thread, I will gladly contribute.

First of all be it known to all that I am Linux stupid.  I am probably a below average profficiency user on this forum.  I almost did not get a 6000 solely because I feared my sl5500 software would not work and I would be too dumb to get it running.  My fears were baseless!  With the exception of Prboom, and Stratagus the only thing I did besides install the .ipk of each program was to fiddle with the icon settings. Be smart and download programs from feeds particularly for 6000 and/or c7x0 models, you will save yourself a lot of greif.  However it should be painfully obvious to you that almost EVERY program works with the 6000 in at least 320 x 240 and some 5500 software will even run at 640 x 480 right out of the can!

I am SO glad I upgraded to the 6000 and have ZERO regrets about not getting a c860. The usb host, second cf slot and extra battery in the sleeve,  and the built in wifi are just an incredible combo.  I:ve dubbed it my micro-tablet.

Good luck and good hunting!
Hope this helps someone.

I kind of doubt everything can fit in the the internal memory.

jeode
jmap
qpe-gaim
qpegps
zfax
zgps

These in particular interest me.  I can't find an ipk for jmap for example, just a tar.  I have the feeling I'll need jeode to install jmap, but jeode failed.

I tried qpe-gaim, but that failed also.  I got as far as everything being displayed, but couldn't get the irc working properly.

The other gps and fax program interest me also.  Knowing some 6000 feeds would probably prove useful.  Mentioning it helps, as at least I know it's supposed to exist, so I'll start looking harder

I see tkc kapital on the list. I encountered several problems. In the check book register field the bottom of the screen covers some of the comands to enter new transactions. Is there a way to fix this. Also, there does not seem to be a column for the check or transaction number? I bought this software from handango. last week. Is there an upgrade? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for you input.

ok, based on his clues, I've finally got the following working.  The key as he said is to find feeds based on the 6000 or the C7x0 series.  Most 5500 apps work fine.  Many have the zoom button checked, and work fine when you uncheck them.

zoomed apps: TraveLog PRO, FamilyTree, Patience

no zoom required: ZBEDic + various dictionaries (including the wikipedia) (hint - had to install unicode to get the asian character set) , zKnights, Tetrix, Kismet, irssi, mc

sort of working (no gps, so I can't test it): Wellenreiter, qpeGPS

note: most tkc apps will run if you use the C7x0 or if they specify the 6000.  They've mentioned that definitely tkcVideo won't work.

The one app I wanted to get working was Kstars, but no such luck.  I found an ipk for it, but it's for OZ and the paths are all wrong.

Sorry folks I have busy for a few days since I posted that list of programs.  I am very glad someone stepped in to post the feed links.  When I am done with this post and some annoyance things like finishing paying this months bills I will check and see if the two feeds that I use are different and if so I will post them as well!

In answer to the first question, yes I installed everything possible to sdcard (1gb) and I have about one third of it filled.  Out of the 25 NAND memory we all start with I now have about 15mb still empty.  I did some elementary speed test to make sure but I discovered that there is NO appreciable speed difference between the onboard NAND memory and my Lexar 32x sdcard.  Therefore it seemed best to load everything onto it that I possibly could.  My IBM microdrive is actually faster writing so I keep wads, mpegs, a healthy swap partition etc. on it.  This still allows me my 1gb cf lexar card in the expansion sleeve for lazy storage...MP3s and Scummvm game data etc.
By the way if you do not own a sleeve and do not mind a bit larger pda then I encourage everyone to get a sleeve ASAP... you will NOT regret doing it!  Do not forget that sharp will no longer be making these and I am sure they will become quite rare very soon.
Going back to what I have installed, I actually got that list from the uninstall list in the add remove programs window as it appears on my 6000.
tkcVideo is the only program I ran into that I WANTED to run and could not.  I am experimenting around with tkcKapital and trying to recreate the issue that was pointed out.  If I find a workaround I will post it.  That might nix Kapital from my list.  I hope not.  I LIKE that program.
I was not really trying to show off with my huge listing, I was trying to accomplish two things;

First was to demonstrate and settle once and for all that the 6000 did NOT suffer huge insurmountable incompatibilities concerning existing software.  Further I was being honest about my knowledge level to show that even a determined newbie could easily do what I have done!
Second was to fill a niche that I had noticed that there was a lack of information concerning retail programs and compatibility as many ppl will not buy unless they KNOW it works.  So go out there and buy these programs...There is some VERY good software in that list that is worth every penny invested.  Support your Zaurus/Linux community and put your bucks behind your bark!

God Bless All,

As promised here is the feed info;

Stupkids feed-- http://www.bryandluca.com/feed/ (http://www.bryandluca.com/feed/)
This is a C860 feed I believe but everything I have tried from there works on the 6000.

Here are some links to other software threads on this forum that I have found useful for particular programs and that are chock full of links to How-tos etc;

Kismet - https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...=software&st=15 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6423&hl=software&st=15)

Opies Sharp Rom feed-- http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/stable/sharprom/ (http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/stable/sharprom/)
This is NOT a 6000 particular feed.  It does however have many helpful programs/applets that run just fine on the 6000 that are hard to find elsewhere.

Nethack - (this very thread)

vnc-keypebble - https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...=software&st=30 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3621&hl=software&st=30)
NOTE;  I installed opie-keypebble fromthe above opie feed and it worked with no further action on my part.

Prboom - https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...=7726&hl=prboom (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7726&hl=prboom)
This is a thread that I culled the info on getting the right packages of SDL and prboom.  Works like a charm!

Java - https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...ic=7919&hl=java (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7919&hl=java)
This will help you run java programs under Suns jme java interpreter if you would rather use it than installing jeode.  If someone would grab zaurus java benchmark and run it under jeode and then the built in jme I would LOVE to know which is faster.

Last but not least do not forget Zugs very own feed that you should see to your left.

Also do not forget that all of these links may not be 100 percent solely for the 6000.  The first link is the only one I know is purely for the c860 and works with the 6000.

As always I hope this info helps!

God Bless,

Ken: qpe-gaim works for me.  What problems are you having?

Once I figured out the Display parameter for making things run 640x480 I went through and added that line to all my applications.  most work fine (yay!) but some don't.  Noteably: qpe-alarmclock and powerchord.

powerchord opens as a tiny unmoveable/unresizeable window and the pulldown menus are too big for the window, so they're all bunched together and there isn't enough room for the text.  I downloaded the source for this, but I have no idea how to compile stuff for this, so if someone has a howto on that (I'd like to use an x86 debian system for the builds) I'd appreciate it.

qpe-alarmclock opens are a full screen window, but the gui elements are all bunched in the corner, and the fonts are too big.  How can I make things use small fonts?  Is there some sort of a font browser available?

Of course qpe-alarmclock is useless since the system time on this skews by at least 5 minutes a day.  Has anyone found a fix for that?

aarons,

Basically it had problems connecting to the irc.  I've since then moved on and gotten irssi working instead.  While it would have been nice to have all the other protocols in my Z, I began thinking about the specific things I wouldn't be able to resolve, like logging into x on the undernet.

I may try again later, thanks.

ok, found out what jmap needs, which was jeode instead of the built in java machine (the evm vs cvm issue).

After all of that, it turns out that jmap runs a bit slow, although it's a great idea.  What I've decided to do is to use the imaging program that's built into the 6000 instead to pull up the jpg.  The advantages for me is that it's faster and I can use the stylus to drag around the single image itself, rather than to have to load the various smaller images each time.

I have problem with gaim to.

It logged onto MSN fine for me, but once I touch the screen or make any changes, the program just crashes. If I choose to auto-login, it crashes automatically.

I found the installation steps are more than what's on gaim's installation pagess. I'm a newbie. Does it matters which version of lib-opie and zlib you use? I want to use gaim so baddly. Could you please post a how-to for getting gaim to work on 6000? Thanks a lot.

PS. I tried to uninstall everything (libs) and install again. One question, how does gaim remember my account name? Could you tell me where gaim stores my account information after uninstallation?

Edit: Finally, I got it to work for me. I only use MSN. But it seems to be very unstable. Most of the time if I change the MSN account setting, it just crashes. Well, I can live with that, just not playing around.

the guy who maintain it owns only the SL-6000L, as far as I know.

You may also want to have a look at his Zaurus page:

http://cyberphreak.com/zaurus/ (http://cyberphreak.com/zaurus/)

If it can help, this is the list of all programs I have installed and work on my SL-6000L (not all downloaded from the above feed, by the way):

Backgammon 0.9.5
FreeNote 1.9.2pre
Javachess 1.0
Kino2 0.3 (but with mplayer from version 0.22)
Opie-reader 0.7h
Opie-tetrix 1.5-1
Petittrack 1.2.0 (Satellite Tracking software, I'm an Amateur Radio operator)
Powerchord 0.0.7
Qpdf2 freetype-2.2.1-20040217 (this is the version I found working best)
ResistorUI 1.5.0-0.9 (utility to "translate" resistors' color code)
ZUC 1.1 (conversion utility: ounces to grams, miles to kilometers, etc.)

About half of those programs can run at full 640x480 resolution. The rest works best with "display with magnified screen" checked, which will switch the Z to 320x240.

Enjoy the Z!!!

Since I couldn't find a shfs port anywhere, I built one myself.  Keep in mind this will probably only work on the SL-6000L, and even then likely only on the stock ROM due to the kernel module. I've tested the package on my Z, and it installs/uninstalls cleanly, but I have no other hardware / configurations to test it on. Use at own risk...

To anyone who has gotten prboom to work, can you post some information on what you did? I keep getting "Segmentation Fault" errors whenever I run prboom on my SL-6000L. I used the IPKs here:  http://www.gnurou.org/zaurus/feed (http://www.gnurou.org/zaurus/feed)

Tree!Explorer QT is just about the nicest file manager I have used. The 1.7.0 version at http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/) works very well with the Sharp rom 1.12 that came on the SL-6000. When it first starts, it is in Japenese (I think) but since I don't have Japenese fonts installed, the words across the top just look like boxes with letters beside them. If you click on the box beside the (V) for view, you can select English then everything works great (providing you speak English). You can also select French which looks like it works too. (Not completely sure since I don't speak French).

Yeah, TreeExplorer is great.

Might as well post what I'm keeping on my SL-6000L so far aside from the standard Qtopia apps. This is using the standard Sharp ROM 1.12.  Yeah, I've been busy.

Applications:
FreeNoteQT (1.10.0)
FBVNCServer-SL6000 (0.9.5) (+ Added to rc.local) (* The zaurus version you typically find on feeds will cause massive problems, get the version from http://sdgsystems.com/download.html) (http://sdgsystems.com/download.html))
Hancompresenterviewer (1.6.0)
Kismet (3.0.1c-20031228) (* Signifigant hacking required)
Neic (1.0.1) (IRC client)
Neocal-Qtopia (1.7.7)
Opie Keypebble (0.9.1-20020703)  (VNC viewer)
Pure-FTPD (1.0.16-1) (+ Added to /etc/rc.local)
Python-exe (0.2)
Qazoo (0.8.1) (Yahoo IM)
QPDF2 (freetype-2.2.1-20040217)
QPE Filemanager (qpe-filemanager-vga) (1.5.0-2)

Terminal (qpe-terminal-vga) (1.5.0-3)
QPEAlarmClock (2.0.0)
Qtopia-Sysinfo (1.0.1)
QTRDesktop (1.2.0) (Remote Desktop application)
RSync (2.5.6) (* Cannot get server to work, haven't tried client sync. I find it easier to use a Windows program called FTPSync and/or write custom stuff.)
SQLite3 (0.8.6)
TKCPlayer (2.0-031101)
TKCZip (2.0-031205)
Treeexplorer (1.6.0)
TXImage (0.2)
ZBedic (0.9.2-2 + many dictionaries, Wikipedia, etc.)
ZEditor (2.2.6English)
Zuc (1.1) (units conversion)

Games:
BustEm-Demo (1.2)
Froot (0.7.1)
Heretic (* More for giggles, I've found it unplayable. I run in 480x640 mode, oddly enough the mappings aren't bad and its faster that way.)
Interstellar-Flames-Demo (1.0)
KPacman (0.3.1-0.1)
Nethack (* Signifigant hacking required)
Opie Tetrix (1.5-1)
QPE-Minesweep (1.5.0-1)
Vectroids (1.1.0)
Zemufe (0.9.2-2) (Front end for ZNester)
ZNester (7.1-1) (* Added a custom znester.rc file so that the keymappings are wonky and reversed. If anyone wants the file I'd be happy to drop a web page on it. I'd love to disable sound, if anyone knows how to do this please let me know.)
ZSolitare (1.0)

Unix utilities:
ArmUtils (1)
Nano (0.9.23)

Libraries and drivers:
eon-libflac (1.0)
gconv-tiny (2.2.4-2)
irk-zaurus (0.11.0) (Taurus keyboard driver)
kismet-QT (2.0.0)
libSDL (1.2.6-zports_c7x0-1)
libSDL-mixer (1.2.5cvs-1)
libSDL-net (1.2.5cvs-1)

libgnutls7 (0.8.10-2)
libopie1 (1.0.2)
libopie2 (1.8.2)
libpcap0 (0.7.2)
libpng (2.1.0.9)
libyahoo2 (0.7.4.2)
openssl-0.9.7a (0.9.7a)
qazoosounds (0.8)
zlib (1.1.2)
zlib1 (1.1.4)

I also followed these instructions (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Samba%20over%20non-USB) to enable Samba all the time when connected; changed the passwords (so pure-ftpd is more secure), added mount / unmount USB commands, etc.

The following software I remember explicitly not working:
tkcRadio
MAME emulators (MaxMame works, but is dog slow. zMame doesn't work at all. Help us out here, coders  )
prboom (segment faults on my machine)

I'd love to see a Genesis emulator sometime for the Zaurus.

There's probably other software I tried that I can't remember that works, but I didn't like.

Zaurus Feed Instructions (http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rose/zaurus/).
I've fixed dependencies as best I can, squeezed a few more bytes out of each package, and made them all happy on SD and CF rather than internal memory.  And the link now has instructions for using the site as a feed and for installing to SD or CF.

A few packages have been withdrawn and some new ones added.  I will add minicom, stunnel, and openssh as time permits.

Please let me know if you have any problems.  I'll do my best to fix them.

Did anyone have Netfront on their list of Apps that work on the 6000L ?

Well, now Netfront is avalable also and I have included that alongwith Opera (Netfront works better on some sites where Opera fails - like Gmail etc).

The Netfront is from the Cacko feed of the Cacko 1.22 lite version (for the C7xxx series) and installs perfectly on the 6000L.
Only one problem I faced was that the bookmarks are not being saved - gives an error message on saving (I guess some folder permissions must not be right).

It installed correctly and worked pretty well for a while. Then after about 10 times of use, it pops up a windown saying "Netfront can not be used on model s other than SL 3000", then quit.
Besides changes in the setting won't stick, can't save bookmarks, seems all the settings and path variables are all built into the binary. I can't find a setting file to modify manually.
It's nice when it works, but won't last on 6000 is a shame

change to root user
cd to /home/zaurus/Documents

now you can save your bookmarks

I do, and it's version 1.1.2.

For those that have a 6000L and are using the sharp rom, it would appear that Petite Peinture versions 1.0-2 and 1.1-1 work fine.  As of version 1.2-1 and above, the program will load fine, but the touch screen will cease to function.

updated versions of his program can be found at:

Title: Software for the SL-6000
Post by: Jon_J on April 07, 2008, 07:09:58 pm
You may ignore the first part of my post, between the dashes. Start reading from EDIT:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the one I have, I don't know about running it on the 6000.
To unpack it you need to extract "opera-multimodal_arm" from this IPK
Then rename it "opera-multimodal_arm.tgz"
Open that, and then open /data.tar.gz
Then in the /home/zaurus/.opera/ directory, you'll find "opera_arm.ipk"
It's been a long time since I used it on my C3100, but I think "opera_arm.ipk" is the 7.55 version.
There is a lot of other stuff in this package also.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
Here's an interesting tidbit.
I found this html document inside this package. According to this README, you just install this entire package onto a 6000.
I think the above directions about extracting the contents were used for getting this to work on the clamshell series Zaurus.
I'll attach the html doc here also. The attached html doc also requires "man.gif" and "file.gif" to be complete.
(man.gif is first image, file.gif is second image)
