Title: Did I get ripped off?
Post by: Pele on November 14, 2003, 08:51:27 pm
Okay... Got my Zaurus in...

Fully Functional, but all I got was the following:

Zaurus Unit SL-5500 (Clean except for a label that can be removed)
Power Supply
Power Cord for the above power supply
Battery
Stylus

The screen protective cover wasn\'t even on there... I\'m not puttin it in my pocket without one...

So my question is, Dod I get ripped off if I paid $160 for it?

Generally, I would say that $160 is a good deal for a 5500.  Considering you were missing a few basic things (plastic cover, box, CD, manuals), I would say it was just an OK deal.

Now, taking a closer look at what you\'re missing, and if it\'s really a big deal...:

1.  plastic cover - personally I took mine off immediately, and never used it again.  Get yourself a G2 screen protector from pdascreenprotectors.com and you\'ll never look back!

2.  original box - ah, big deal.  it\'s only good for holding the CD and manuals anyway...

3.  CD with software - It\'s all outdated anyway... download what you need from myzaurus.com or the community site.

4.  manuals - you can download and print this too... (from myzaurus.com)

Lastly, considering you got yourself a healthy Z with no dead pixels (assuming), just buy yourself a screenprotector and be happy with your new Z!

But I\'ve got no cable to synch with... Didn\'t they originally come with a docking cradle or something?

crap, I forgot about that small piece of equipment!

5.  cradle - typically used for syncing - unless you use wireless syncing, you\'ll need the cradle.

You might be able to find your missing pieces, especially the cradle on ebay for a few bucks...

Aren\'t you the one that carries around a spare cradle? I know someone on here does.

What about the SerialIO thin USB cable? Does the cradle have extra functionality that a basic cable doesnt have?

um, no... I don\'t carry a cradle with me... besides, the 760 doesn\'t have a cradle... just a usb cable... it\'s nice.

to answer your question, no I don\'t think the cradle has any other functionality that the usb cable couldn\'t provide.

To whoever voted for the \"Holy Crap! What kinda sucker did you buy it from, and where can I get some of what he\'s smoking?!? (And buy a Zaurus off him.)\" option. It was www.superpawn.com ...

They just let a new in box SL-5500 go on eBay for US$125... Now I\'m kinda bummed... Oh well

I got mine of ebay for $111 minus battery and recharger. Then I got a battery for $38 and used a old charger from a casseopia to recharge. I think I got a good deal.

I totaly dissagree. the G2 is the worst screan protector ever made and using one can disptroy your digitizer.

First of all it puts constant presure betweent he digitizer and the case, making it hard to aligne the digitizer in many models, and the simple act of installing or rmoving one of these can destroy your digitizer if you don\'t exercise extreme caution.

Second, because it is non adhesive, it is completely possible for sand, dust and other abbrasive materials to get underneath andas the G2 moves around on the screan, it will slowly gouge out bug nasty scratches.

It was a G2 and dust from a ceramic studio that put my first PPC on ebay

Also, i wouldn\'t say ripped off, but it wasn\'t a great deal either

(From Pele on College public terminals.)

Yep... See an above post... Hosed my digitizer, although I wasn\'t being all that careful on my installation...

Havent decided on whether or not to install the remaining G2 on the new Zaurus, should I find one at a good price.
