Hi,
When i log into to the forum, and click on the link to posts since i last visited i get a list of new posts. However when i log in again, i cannot see which posts i have not read.
In other words when i log out it marks all posts as read, which is very annoying. Is there a reason why this happens?

Hear hear!!
I\'ve already posted about this, I think it\'s an issue with the forum software.
My problem, which is the same kind of thing, is also rather frustrating - I open up ZUG in the morning when I get into work, and settle down with my coffee for a quick look through. But often I\'m called away mid coffee (not good ;-)) and by the time I get back the forum has decided that I\'ve read all of the posts.
If I have time I look through and see what I\'ve not read, but this really is too time consuming so generally I just give up and check back later once more posts have been made. I\'m sure I miss a lot of stuff this way.
The other thing which would be nice is to have posts marked so you know whether you\'ve posted to them, much like the old devnet (I think you can get a list, but I\'d prefer it on the page so I can just look at the forum and see whether anyone has replied to a post, etc.).
This is not a moan (I realise that the fault lies with the software), just a wish list.

It seems that when i log in, the selection of posts there reflects which ones i have / have not read... but that\'s just a small selection.

Yes, unfortunately this is still an issue (and has been discussed before). I\'ve been doing some research on this, and there are a couple suggestions for fixing it. One of them may work, but it\'s pretty drastic. I will probably try this solution on the ZUG dev site to see if it might help.

Hi, my workaround for this is to select the keep me logged in box. It seems to all work grand then.

Has something changed (for the worse I hasten to add)?
I can now only read two posts or so before everything is marked as read. Bit of a pain.

I can confirm it\'s happening as it just happened to me, I was preparing a post which took a few minutes, when I returned to the forum index they were all marked as read.

Same here. I had 4 pages of new posts. By the time I got to the bottom of the first page, I couldn\'t access the rest anymore.
From my observations of the board\'s behaviour, I\'ve come up with the following description of how it handles \"new posts\":
The board tracks the date & time of the start of your current and previous \"logical session\". A logical session begins when you first login (after your previous session has terminated). A session ends when the board has not had a request from your browser for more than some period of time (the \"timeout\"). So, if you take too long reading or writing a post (for example, you get up for a cup of coffee or get a phone call), when you next try to access the board it is interpreted as the start of a new session and the date/time is reset.
\"New posts\" are determined by finding all posts that have been written since the start of your *previous session* (and before the start of your current session; otherwise, you\'d miss messages). This is easy for the board as it only needs to store the date and time of your previous session. Keeping track of every individual message that every member has read would take a lot of resources. Also, the board knows where you left off no matter where you log in from; it wouldn\'t if it used cookies.
Assuming that my analysis is correct, I would recommend the following things to mitigate the negative aspects of this scheme (which I think might be relatively easy without requiring major changes to the board SW):
1. Increase the \"timeout\" value significanty. Users can reset it, if ever necesary, by explicitly logging out. Alternately, a button could be added to reset it.
2. Add a \"search by date & time\" option. i.e. find all messages posted after X. This way, if a user loses their place inadvertantly, they can at least easily find the messages they wanted to read.
3. When the board finds new messages based on the date & time of the start of your previous session, the date & time used in the query should be placed in the search results URL and subsequent requests using the search results should be evaluated using this saved query term, rather than the one stored in the user database. (I think this would prevent a search from resetting because of a new logical session.)
4. Consider scrapping the automatic session management altogether and replacing it with a system that requires the user to manually \"bookmark\" their place. If they forget to set their bookmark before logging off, they can still find their messages using #2 (above).
Just some thoughts...

I liked the feature that that DevNet software board had to view posts based on days, i.e., last 1,2,3 days - up to a week ago. I\'m not sure what the software was, but I liked that feature, since, like drinking good whiskey, you never loose your place.

Try \"search\" with \"*\" for terms & search previous options of \"1 day\" (or 7 days, etc) in \"descending order\".
Closest that I been able to come to what you seem to describe.

*SCREAM*
damn this is frustrating.
I read one post and then the rest are all marked as read.
this just started happening a week and a half ago or so for me. what changed?
at least I can take a little comfort that it\'s not just me... as is often the case.

Ditto for me. Two posts, then blam!

yes, this is a total pain in the ass... same thing happened here.
Nothing has changed on the server or the site, so I don\'t know why it\'s happening much more frequently now. I\'m looking into the issue now... I\'m also looking at more drastic measures at fixing the issue. (no, not shutting down the forum...)... more details soon.

It just happened to me for the first time… read and answered 1 pm…all post are marked as read.

I just realised something. I\'m not sure if it was ever a forum capabillity, but i thought i\'d include it here rather than making it another thread. I can\'t search within forum posts. If i do a search for scumm it only takes the ones with the titles... I find this very disappointing.

try your search again... you\'ll now find this thread in the search results, even though \"scumm\" isn\'t in the thread title

offroadgeek, I checked out what you said and you\'re correct that this current post shows up in the search results. What about this one?
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...ighlight=dosbox (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3893&highlight=dosbox)
I have used the word Scumm in the first post of this topic.
*** just realised that one has to search scumm* to get all the results.

you\'ve probably figured this out by now, but the reason why that post doesn\'t show when you only search for \"scumm\" is because that post contains the word \"ScummVM\". Hence the need for the correct search criteria.
Do a search for \"scummvm\" and you\'ll get that post.

Forgive me for not reading the backlog of posts in this thread in case someone else had said this but I\'m in a hurry
The bug seems to be when you return to the forum list after making a post (starting a new topic OR replying to an existing post). I\'ve tested this twice now and I just wanted to be sure before I posted. I hope this helps you Michael.

It happens to me using firefox.
I tend to open each part of the forum (general chat, openzaurus, etc.) one by one in the main window, then open any interesting topics in a new tab to look at after I\'ve scanned through the entire forum (hope that makes sense).
Normally after I get about half way down the list all of the topics are marked as read.
No idea. Bring on the new forum software! ;-)
