Title: Silly Nubie Question- Difference between Cacko and X11 ROMS?
Post by: ultra-hp on May 09, 2004, 08:59:16 am
Right now I have the cacko rom. Why would I need to use the X11 rom? Will my programs on the cacko be able to run on the X11 or are the programs specifically designed for it? Is there a way to use X11 like Konsole and just \"pop it up\" during my Cacko session.

Sorry if this question offends anyone. I have only been using Linux for the last 4 days   - Just picked up a used 600 page copy of \"Linux Unleashed\" so the silly questions should slow down

I\'m not offended and it\'s not a silly question, kudos to you for wanting to learn :-)

The Cacko ROM you have is a Qtopia ROM, letting you run your Qtopia apps as you have been doing.

The X11 ROM - pdaXrom is for running X applications, like X applications on a desktop Linux or UNIX system. It\'s a different way of putting graphical apps on the screen than Qtopia uses. You cannot run Qtopia applications on it.

BUT you can run X applications on your Cacko as I do using X/Qt.

http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/ (http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/)

This gives you the best of both worlds, if you really need it. I only run Xterm and GIMP. And yes it works like a normal Qtopia app, there is an X icon in the taskbar.

The chances are you don\'t *need* it, but give it a few weeks and who knows... you may find a particular app not available for Qtopia which can only run in X that you do need.

Have fun!

Thanks for bringing this to light. Though I had the X-Server installed on my C860 driven by the Cacko 2.10 ROM, I couldn\'t get any X-based program to run. The Cacko page hosts a couple of X programs. These were the ones I tried.

Any further hints will be greatly appreciated.

The problem you are having running pdaX ipks via Xqt server is most probably that of incompatible libc - Qtopia and Xqt are compiled with gcc2 while pdaX is compiled with gcc3.
