hi
I\'m intending to get a C860, after browsing the board, i am still confused
It seems that the only way to restore to the original factory rom for C series is through NAND Flash restore? Why is it not possible to restore via normal flashing like how we install OZ/cacko roms??
if i have install cacko rom, do i need to use the service menu to flash to another rom, say OZ?
-
No you can flash any rom using the normal process, you could even flash the original rom that way too - IF there was one available - Sharp has only released (and only has to release) the code for the kernel.
Until they or someone else releases the original sharp rom the only option to go back to it is to use NAND restore.

And sharp has lately gone into total jerk mode IMHO.

Let say I\'ve done a NAND flash backup of c860 rom, and i try to do a NAND flash restore, the restore was not successful, will i brick it? or can i happily go and flash other Rom like cacko, OZ etc and heck care about the original jap. rom?
-
It could become a brick, unfortunately.
As long as you don\'t reset it, you can still retry to flash.
Don\'t use the \'test\' option. Dangerous.
-
that seems dangerous...so i guess one shld stay
1) stick with plain jap sharp rom
2) flash to any of the cacko/oz/qtopia roms and move around these rom and never return to the original roms
to be safe..

Depending on why the NAND restore was not successful, you may brick it, although it has never happened to me. I\'ve had the restore fail due to bad SD and bad NAND files, in this case I removed the SD card reformatted it, copied the NAND file across again and reflashed.
However as amrein suggests the Diagnostic Menu is not something you want to be playing around in - there are options there that will do some odd stuff to your Z - even turn it into a brick - just ask Foxidie.
You can manually tarball the whole Z onto SD card and use that to return to the original Japanese rom - the question you need to ask yourself it do I or will I need Japanese support? If the answer is no then move to one of the other roms and save yourself 30MB in dictionary files. if the answer is yes then you will need to decide whether NAND restore is too dangerous for you or not.

Thanks Stubear, I guess you are right. There\'s no need for me to stick with japanese support rom actually. So I think going for Cacko QT/ pdaX/OZ roms will be better. Maybe a dual boot of Cacko QT and PdaX.
You mentioned abt manual taring the whole Z onto SD. I\'ll need to repack it properly before I can flash it back to Z?
-
Yeah, you can repack the tarball as a ROM or just untar it over the current install. I\'d suggest using the first option.
There used to be a ROM builder available that Cacko use to make their roms but I\'ve been able to find the link to it again.
