There was another thread on USB configuration between the Zaurus and Windows98, but it died. I want to start this thread as a place for general Windows98-Zaurus questions (since it appears that there aren\'t that many Windows98 Zaurus users out there).
1: I can\'t get the Zaurus USB to work with my Windows98 as a USB Drive, Network drive, or anyhting else. Has anyone gotten this to work under Windows98, or does anyone have any ideas how this will work.
2: I can\'t recompress Zaurus-compatible video on Windows98... all of the forums I\'ve seen requires the latest Microsoft Media Encoder, which only works on the WinNT-children platforms (Win2000, WinXP, etc). I\'ve tried the Divx encoder, but the resulting videos aren\'t 100% compatible (some artifacts in the video and the video and audio quickly get out of sync). Any success stories on Windoes98 for Zaurus? Is there a way to get the new Media Encoder to work on non-NT-children platforms? Are there any other encoders that work?
Anything else Windows98-related?
I REALLY don\'t want to install WindowsXP on any of my computers (I hate the NT-children platforms)... this is a Linux-based forum... there must be a non-WindowsXP solution for these things.
Isn\'t it ironic that the Linux-based Zaurus is dependant on a Windows machine for some of its stuff?... is there a way to get away from this?

I\'m not sure exactly what you are asking in question #1 but I\'ll just say that my zaurus works fine with my win98se machine in usb network mode (with the driver on the zaurus disk). I can access the zaurus memory in network neighborhood and vnc to it. I can do anything a normal networked computer can do.
Oh, and any \"usb drive\" device needs a driver specificaly installed for it. win 98 does not come with usb drive/solid state memory support. You probably already know that though.
-
Yes, I need the Windows98 \"USB Drive\". Someone in another psot said they had used the drivers that came with their \"7-in-1 card reader\", but I can\'t find those drivers on the Internet.
Right now I\'m no longer worried about getting the \"USB Drive\" working as much as I am trying to get the USB Network Mode working.
What\'s the difference between USB-IO and USB-TCPIP? Which one do you use?
Am I correct that once I get this setup correctly I can then access the Internet/Network from my Zaurus through the main computer?
-
Ok, usb-io is the default (simple) mode. In this mode you use the saurus software to sync and the file transfer program to transfer files to your zaurus. This mode is not a network mode, but it works just fine for syncing.
usb tcp/ip is the mode you want if you are going to access the internet through the cradle, browse your zaurus from network neighborhood, use stuff like vnc or simply ping it. To get this mode working you have to:
1- set your zaurus to usb-tcpip in the pc link settings, choose the ip you want it to use (i just leave the default 192.168.129.201).
2- install the driver that should be on your zaurus cd somewhere, browse the cd for it.
3- once the driver is installed and you rebooted and stuff, enable the driver if it is disabled in devices (dont remimber if it was or not)
4- then right click on network neighborhood, select properties, then find your zaurus driver and give it an ip. it has to be a different ip than your zaurus has (give your pc 192.168.129.1 if your zaurus is still on the default 192.168.129.201, netmask of 255.255.255.0 of course)
5-reboot, blablabla. then in zaurus manager (the icon in your win98 taskbar which should have been installed with the rest of your sync software) you need to set it to usb-tcpip as well and put in the host name of your zaurus (zaurus) and the ip address of your ZAURUS (192.168.129.201). this is so the syncing software will know where your zaurus is and therefore be able to sync to it.
Now, to be able to access the internet through your pc you need to do nat (network address translation). this requires certain software to run on win 98 which you will probably have to purchase. i dont use win98 for this type of thing sence linux does it all for free. i remimber a program called \'nat32\'. try searching for that.

If I read it right, you can\'t get your device to connect as anything. Assuming you have installed drivers off Japanese CD etc.
Try this little trick.

Might also work with the USB Drive feature as well.
It is not a Zaurus issue, but some sort of windows issue (The people that showed it me had the problem with Pocket PCs as well)
Of course, you may have a completely unrelated issue...

I thought \"Internet Connection Sharing\" in Windows does this. ...or is that something else?

Windows recognizes a device. As a USB Drive, Windows doesn\'t have the needed drivers. As a USB Network, Windows sees it and installs drivers for it. No errors, but I\'m not able to see my Zaurus, nor can my Zaurus see anything on my laptop.

I didn\'t think that was in windows 98. Go ahead and try it, I have never tried it though.

Erm! win98 is now 6 years old you can\'t really expect it to recognise a deviced that is less than a year old out of the box.
Most people who have to use wintel stuff use either XP or 2000 which detect and use the the storage driver without needing any additional drivers.
If they don\'t have to use wintel software then they use Linux, solaris Macos,Aix and they are are just the popular ones.
No offense meant in any way, see my PM.

The best way to connect a Z to Windoze98 is to upgrade to a versino that really supports usb - anything prior to 98 has rotten usb support and you will always have troubles - up grade to XP (or even WinME) and most of your problems will go away.

I couldn\'t get my Zaurus 5500 to work with Windows 98 USB initially, I trolled the newsgroups and looked and looked, and it turned out I had to download the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility version 5.1.1002 for my Dell Dimension XPS T550. http://www.intel.com/design/software/drive...latform/inf.htm (http://www.intel.com/design/software/drivers/platform/inf.htm)
After installing these drivers and removing my USB hardware devices and rebooting, it found them and then worked with the 5500 Intellisync 1.43E software perfectly.
It did mess up my sound card, and I had to download updated drivers for that...oh yeah it also smoked the drivers for my scanner so I had to reinstall those, but now everything is just peachy. Don\'t you just love Windows???
-
Yes, Windows is 6 years old and, and some ways, obsolete, but I\'m still using it because I don\'t like microsoft and am just waiting for the day when Linux is a little more seasoned.
I just don\'t understand why a Zaurus Linux device appears to have been optimized to connect with Windows instead of being more... \"open\".

Nice resume Tony. Makes me feel like I should update mine, although I only have 14 years of experience with a single company...so my timeline would be a single point.

Thanks. ...lets just hope it helps me to get a job since my contract is up in 3 weeks. :?

You say that Windows recognises it as a device and installs drivers for it (when it\'s in network mode)?
So are you sure this is a driver issue and not an I-need-to-give-it-the-right-IP-address problem?
I\'ll try to remember to bring in my CD tomorrow then I can try it myself on one of the old laptops at work.

That could be it.... I don\'t know. It looks like everything is setup right, but I can\'t see the Zaurus and the Zaurus can\'t see me...
...and the Zaurus doesn\'t seem to recognize a network. I have the Zaurus and Desktop Zaurus Manager both set to 192.168.129.201. Zaurus can ping it (since it is itself), but the desktop can\'t.
I tried the COM3 trick mentioned above, but that didn\'t change anything.
Am I supposed to do something on the Zaurus before/after I plug in the USB, or is it automatic? I don\'t see anything appear on the system icon tray... shouldn\'t some network icon appear?
If there are steps, what are they? (other than setup steps, since those are already posted).
-
By the way... when I connect the Zaurus in USB Network mode (this is currently the mode I\'m trying to get working), Win98 adds drivers for it, but nothing new shows up under WinIPCfg. Shouldn\'t a new network adapter show up on that list?
What IP address should the Zaurus ping to see the Laptop?... the IP address of the Network Card? (I wouldn\'t think it would be this, because the Network card is the interface to the network, and not to the Zaurus.)
-
The drivers should create a virtual network card which is the PC end of the connection. This will need its own IP address (which is different from the IP address you set on the Zaurus itself).
I\'ve remembered by CD, I\'ll take a look later today and see whether I can get it to work here.

what does winipcfg show on the desktop?
Go to start menu -] run and type winipcfg
A little program should pop up that shws all the adapters that are currently on the win98 box and the ip address of each adapter.
If you can see the usb network but it doesn\'t have an ip address then you need to check your settings on the windows box - make sure that the tcpip options for the network adapter is set to get ip automatically. If that still doesn\'t work try setting the ip address for the usb network adapter to 192.168.129.1

what does winipcfg show on the desktop?
Yes... it displays the network adapters and their current settings. I don\'t see a new adapter in there... In the device manager I see a new adapter installed, but it doesn\'t show up in WinIPCfg.
Also, on the Zaurus, does an icon appear in the system tray when the Zaurus is successfully connected via USB Network?
