Title: Zaurus "Traction" in Japan?
Post by: wmadan on May 12, 2004, 03:41:16 pm
I\'m curious about how well the Zaurus is doing in Japan since Sharp seems to put its best foot forward there as opposed to the U.S.

I\'m also curious as to how the Japanese use the Zaurus in comparison to say, a palm or pocket pc. For example, what applications do they use and do they use the Zaurus for wifi, etc.

A japanese resident on a French Zaurus forum reported today that rumors of a new clamshell Z were afloat on the japanese boards.

He doesn\'t usually forward such gossip but he felt this one had merit, with a possible annoucement forthcoming.

The new Z would resemble a C860 with faster CPU, integrated Wifi, and a four-way jog-button at the back.

YMMV

The Z is a major player in the PDA market in Japan, I\'ve friends out there and who travel to/from regularly, they\'ve been established as a brand for almost a decade, albeit they started as personal organisers (I had one briefly), they evolved into colour machines and into a form factor similar to 5x00 machines before adopting Linux as the OS. I even came across a site in Japan a while back which specialised in doing custom artwork on the cases, a friend says they\'ve a bit of a cult following evidently. He works with people who still have pre-linux machines.

I guess we\'re all beyond help

For some mysterious reason, France is probably the largest european grey market  for the clamshell Z\'s, and we\'re just as bad : mean ownership time of a given model by members is a handful of months (if not weeks), and even so you can\'t get your hands on a used one

No kidding!  I\'ve been waiting and waiting to buy, pulled the trigger and my C860 just shipped today.......then I read this.  Next thing you know Apple will release a Newton replacement.

I don\'t know Japanese, but I\'m as handy as anyone with machine translation.    What are the \"good\" sites?  Post some links!

This morning\'s news: logically enough, it sounds like it\'ll be the C960.

The c960 was mentioned in the same thread that first mentioned the 6000 on the old dev board.  But nobody has come up with much more than a model number so far.

It is indeed exciting news as I\'ve just received a £400 tax refund which is about to be deposited this afternoon

Keep bugging our Japanese contacts about \"when is the new model coming out\" (They are official Sharp Resellers).

And according to them, the intel. is that the next unit is still in \"prototype\" stage with specs. not yet fixed.

Not sure how that reflects in terms of time scales, but I don\'t think we can expect anything for at least months.

Of course, I think we all know better than to trust intelligence reports these days, so they could be wrong

The USB host might be there, but I wouldn\'t hold too much faith in bluetooth.  I\'ve seen threads relating to the 6000 where people stated that bluetooth is not popular in Japan.

I\'m most interested in the 4\" transflective from the 6000 which I\'m sure would be in the next gen clamshell.  Must formulate plan to convince wife.  This purchase order *must* be approved.  8)

I just had to share this quote from babel translation from the zaurus link from the above blog.

Quote
As for Kino2 being something which it tries to be able to operate MPlayer which is moved originally with the console with GUI the shank. The developer seems very the Russian, (such place umbrella it does, but Linux) is, but sight moving it is something where with something renewal has stopped. Being free, with high functional movie software something which you can use, it is delightful, it is, but it cries, it cries, un it installed.

This is a gem, had me in absolute stiches
\"the developer seems very the Russian\"
Can any japanese readers give us a proper translation for this?  I need to know what umbrella\'s have got to do with sharp pda\'s,  I also need to know what is meant by \" it is delightful, it is, but it cries, it cries!\"? is this bad or good?.

finally, did he uninstall it in the end or was he recomending the audience to install it?

I need answers to these questions, stubear my freind, this is a cliff hanger for me!

Zbones -

Just consider it the Zen lesson for today <G>.

Does a Z have the Buddah nature?

I do have one concern at the prospect of built in bluetooth/wifi.

That is compatibility in other countries.

Grabbing some data for the Origo card, it says :

Channels : 11 for North America, 14 for Japan, 13 for Europe, 2 for Spain, 4 for France

So that would suggest if it is designed for Japan, it should work everywhere else as well, but not sure if they are exactly the same frequencies or whatever.

Good call, Very plausible.

What about \"gui the shank\", to me a shank is a leg of an edible beast (lamb, beef or pork) unless it is a \"ham shank\" but I don\'t think he is referring to the cockney rhyming slang for masturbation.

Don\'t you just love machine translation!  remind me never to use babel fish to translate to Japanese for the purpose of posing on a Japanese site!

Mind you I may not be able to work out if the replies are insults/death threats or words of encorage ment.

Any offers for the umbrella thing?

Absolutely, it does seem to practice \"kensho\" (seeking to to see into one\'s own nature).

Kino2 enable you to operate MPlayer cli by GUI. Seemingly the developers are Russian (Linux is used alot there or Linux is developed alot there - sorry not sure about this bit)  although the site relocates  -- something used to come out and updating may have stopped. Although I was glad the software is free and to it is highly efficient movie software which can be used, I uninstalled it tearfully.

It seems that the blogger is unaware of the Cacko/pdaX connection and is confused by the site relocation. He also thinks that development has stopped on kino2 - Note that is my translation of this text, it may just be my poor Japanese skills.

The reason for his \"tearfull\" uninstalling appears to be that he can\'t get it to play wmv or divx encoded using virtual dub.

http://www.excite.co.jp/world (http://www.excite.co.jp/world) is a slightly better translator for tech stuff going Japanese -] English. Use http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/ (http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/) for short text snippets and http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web/ (http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web/) for web pages. It always default to Eng -] Jap, so Jap -] Eng needs to be selected (2nd option in combo box for text, second radio button for web)
