Title: RSS reader midlet?
Post by: cascadefx on May 14, 2004, 11:57:59 am
I am looking for a GOOD RSS reader / client / aggregator for the Zaurus (5600) and I can across this http://www.brothas.net/rssr/  (http://www.brothas.net/rssr/%20)

It is an rss reader designed for  handheld devices.  From the documentation \"It uses RMS (persistent storage) for offline reading. It is MIDP 1.0 CLDC 1.0 compliant and requires about 256kb memory to work well.A few feeds are hardcoded for easy adding but you can of course add your own RSS feed URLs.\"

Any idea if this would work with the Z and if so/how?

If not, any ideas for a GOOD RSS (free... I\'m poor for a while) reader?  I tried Zaurss and HATED IT!

If your Zaurus has the cvm runtime, it should work, because the cvm uses the J2ME personal profile, which is a superset of CLC, which is a superset of CLDC.

If you have Jeode then I\'m not sure, because Jeode uses a standard that predates J2ME.

Unfortunately(?) it uses the Jeode runtime.

darn darn darn darn darn.

Anybody know of a good RSS reader that will run on a 5600 with the Sharp rom?

Options:
1) Download cvm (I forget how, but it\'s available from Sun.  I think you get a \"developer version\" by sending them an email and then you get a password)
2) Try it on Jeode.  I\'m not certain if it will or won\'t work.  It might.  Worth a shot?

Zepo does rss and web off-line capture/reading. Works fine on my 5600 with Sharp rom. It\'s not free, but very cheap. It also has a couple minor bugs, but the author does respoond to reports and I\'m waiting right now for an update. I use it all the time to read The Onion off-line and quite a few rss feeds...
Zepo at Handango (http://www.handango.com/sharp/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=423&jid=F581F9651XBA2D3458E2EC865FD5412A&platformId=9&productType=2&productId=46405§ionId=0&catalog=80)

Any ideas on how to set it up to work?  I am not a java person and no matter what I try, I get messages like:
SlSharedManager: can\'t get proc entry
Display size = 480x640
could not open translation file /home/QtPalmtop//i18n/en/libsl.qmid
load: class RSSReaderMIDlet-0.35b.jar not found.
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /mnt/card/Documents/RSSReaderMIDlet-0/35b/jar.class (No such file or directory)

Thanks for any pointers you can provide!

Well, your couldn\'t resize the display windows for one thing (which sucks on a portrait mode 5600).  Also, It never displayed any description text.

I found a reader that works!

QuackNews_0.3

It's in the ELSI and I just installed it under OZ on my 5500.
