This is more of a debate topic. Do you think that PDA\'s such as the Zaurus will ever be as powerful as mainstream computers? If only the Zaurus could run the upcoming World of Warcraft (a man can dream, can\'t he), then I would be exceedingly happy. Anyway, random ramblings are over for now.

Your mobile phone has more electronic than the wall Apolo 11 lunar module. The Z is more powerfull than all 8 years laptop.

I wrote about this in another post [the old space program technology] plus that was the debate about laptop vs desktop and now look how powerful laptops are.

I read it. Scientist on French TV have used this idea on TV and radio during one week too.
It\'s amazing to see how those ideas are propagating in minds. I call them \'mind virus\'. A lot of advertising agency play with them. Sometimes, they are dangerous (mainly when they are mixed with fear and culture)...
Ok, let get back to Zaurus. Mephistopheles, can you explain your point?

Have you seen news about the Sony PSP? The PSP is said to be near the PS2 performance, and you\'ve probably seen games on the PS2. Imagine linux running on it... :roll:
(A linux booting from a mini-cd (rewritable, for easier upgrading), /home (or another directory tree with applications or games) on memory stick...)

I also read in the newspaper that the PSP can have built in cameras and networking systems. also nintendo and another japan\'s company made a different type of gameboy with double touch screens on the bottom and on the screen and you can play the games like PDA\'s by touching the screen.

Ill make a prediction...
Once the pace of advancement in computational power has slown down (basically Moors law), that is when the speed of smaller handheld devices will begin to approach the speed of desktop computers. As it becomes harder to advance the basic speed of devices, R&D will focus more on optimization and size reduction. Making computers more convenient to use.

I think this has begun already, Intel and the others seems to have slowed in pumping out faster processors, laptops are getting smaller and containing the latest tech instead of lagging a year or 2 behind desktops. My new Dell laptop at work is much faster than the Pent 90 I had 5 years ago and is a quarter of the weight.
Just my .02...

When Moores\' law is no longer valid, there\'ll be some <insert some computer scientist name here>s\' law, or Moores\' law is changed for other means regarding computer speed which works for another pair of decades.
There seem to be two parallel courses for development of device components, one for the desktop/server sized components and other for handheld devices sized components. Maybe in the future they become the same, and we use the same components in desktop and handheld devices, but for example maybe two or four processors in the desktop, and only one on the handheld device.

I didn\'t really have a point, but I meant, do you think that at some point the (I\'m picking a random name here) Zaurus SX-8800 will be as powerful as a new desktop PC puchased at the same time? It\'s just a debate topic I started to add variety to the forums. Personally, I think so.

I know a software developer who works for Eutechnix, they been given a developement PSP, he said Gran Turismo 4 is amazing on it.

Multicore processors are the future. If you can\'t make \'em faster, make more!

For a computer addict, nothing is more frustrating then been outside without all his data. Same thing for commercial people and soon all smartphone addicts... What is happening arround us today let think that embedded device / PDA / Smartphone will make up for lost time.
It\'s like mathematical function e.g. they will draw closer to desktop PC. I don\'t know what could alter this tendency. Any new kind of device accelerate this and doen\'t brake it. As soon as something come out, it brings more user to this following idea: \"whatever you want, wherever you want\". Today, we translate it \"be able to connect to anyone from everywhere\" and \"your data wherever you are\".
So to give my opinion on Mephistopheles topic, I think that yes, we will certainly see someday laptop (or whatever it will be) as powerfull as desktop PC. Of course, that doesn\'t mean that they will be as powerful as the more powerful one.
Laptop story is a good exemple of what we should be prepared for. We should also be prepared for exemple to new device (in one or two years) like the Zaurus but will X86 processor and with complete PC compatibity. Annonces have already be made... Time will tell.

Very interesting. Thank for the link.

I would put it this way. PDAs of today will always be the equivalent of the computers from 4 years ago... but the computers form 4 years ago are now fast enough to do the things we need today. In other words, I think that some PDAs, although 4 years behind the desktops, are fast enough and powerful enough to BECOME you new laptop/desktop. See http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...iewtopic&t=4281 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4281)

Ha Ha Ha!! We passed the limits of Moors law a few years ago. :wink:

There\'s an inverse law between size and power consumption vs capability. If you want your PDA with an Athlon64 and a gig of RAM and a 120 gig disk drive it could be built today, but then you would have to lug around a brick that works for 10 minutes on battery power.

It\'s amazing to see how those ideas are propagating in minds. I call them \'mind virus\'.
There is a term for an idea as a mind virus..... its called a meme like a gene but a meme....... there is a substantial body of literature behind this idea.... it is all very interesting... just thought you would be curious.
Update:
Aha, now that i have read the rest of the thread it appears that someone had already led you to the meme meme.
-
Me? Curious?
Yes it\'s my first name!
I eye the definition intently. As I said, it is very interesting. It\'s interesting to see that what you understand of life is already processed by other (not always, not always completely but enough to begin something or to light the way).
It reminds me my first and only big fear I had 10 months ago: a lot of French people from Paris have begun to work on left side of the pavement and was forcing people to follow their new \'highway code\' in the wall town. Everyone have begun to follow those new rules. Asking this to my girl friend, she has noticed the difference. Two months later, she wasn\'t remembering anything and were walking on the left too, saying that it was normal (\"Why do you want to walk on the right?\"). It remembers me an experience with mouse and a new product that help them to have better memory (perhaps you have seen it on TV).
Have you ever see those kind of movies? The TV serie \"V\" for exemple . Amazing to be into the real stream.
Today, there is always confusion in people mine and most time it degenerates in a big mess. Move on pavement is still difficult but slalom help . People forcing the old right side or left side are not a lot (half-and-half). Before reading the Internet dico, I was calling them \'coders\'.
Note 1: Was it a \"meme test in vivo\"? I don\'t know. But it was frightening.
Note 2: What I\'m saying shoudn\'t hurt En/US. On a road your cars run on the left. You are already altered (jocking).
-
Hey! I\'m cheerful in the last post. There wasn\'t as much smilies since a long time...
It\'s a shame that it isn\'t because of new Zaurus annoncement.
-
Walking on the left hand side of the pavement? Or on the left hand side of the road (e.g. one side for one direction, one for the other - I doubt this would happen to tell the truth).
I thought this walking on the left was done to make sure you don\'t clonk your sword on someone else\'s (or just on someone else for that matter) - presuming you\'re Japanese that is ;-).

Walking on the same side of the pavement and sharing it (same thing on the other pavement).
On the same pavement, it was like this:
<-----
----->
than it becomes like this
----->
<-----
And now
<-->-<-
>--<-->-
It\'s like throwing a stone in watter. Today, you can still see the wave. Even if it is shading off.

There are already some cool things you can do with the Z
Like running your fav. dvd on your lsptop and streaming it to you Z wirelessly!
I already got this working...I get sound and half a screen of pictures. I know it is something to do with the configuration to get it to understand the res. of Z to get full pic.
