Title: Special Kernel v1.4b
Post by: wizzard on May 23, 2004, 06:51:44 pm
What is this special kernel for? Does it improve the functionality of the 5600?

Well, it does increase the speed, but it may sacrifice some stability.  I\'ve had a few unexpected restarts, but nothing serious.  I\'m still going to use it.  Make sure you d/l version 1.3, and use the sharp ver. of updater.sh

I have done that. But would still like to know if the version 1.4b improves on it.

No, i\'ve heard that ver. is no good with 5600.  And do you know what processor you have?

so you then tripple it, LOL.

I haven\'t heard anything about a version 1.4b.  Is it from Tumnus?  He did the 1.3 one that everyone talks about.  By the way, I\'m not using that kernel at the moment because I experienced strange corruption.  My SD card wouldn\'t unmount any more though I could still swap them and it would read them.  The link in the documents tab stopped working too and if I had a swap partition enabled on an SD of CF card while I put it into \"sleep mode\" then it would lock up when I turned it back on again.  I also had issues with vnc killing qtopia all of which are gone now that I\'m back on the normal kernel and a format.  Some of these problems might not have been caused by the special kernel and I hope they weren\'t because I love the speed increase that it brings.  I will try it again when I when I can be bothered to fix winblows and back my zaurus up.  Or I could back it up to linux but thats a little far down on my todo list.

Yes, unfortunately VNC (server) is not currently useable with 1.3.  I don\'t really miss it though, as I find no use for the VNC... The Zaurus is a mobile tool right?  And as far as you having lockups, and not being able to unmount it, make sure that you are turning off the swap file before trying to eject the card..  It seems that the zaurus becomes a little more \"picky\" after the Special Kernal is installed.

The whole Special kernel thing was started by a guy in Japan (I think), but the initial patches caused problems with the touchscreen on the 5600. ced came up with a howto to fix that and I followed those instructions to upload the binaries, but I also removed the pre-emptive patch as it gave no real benefit and broke lots of kernel module compatibility. So that\'s where Special kernel 1.3 came from for the 5600.

I don\'t have any involvement with this Special kernel 1.4 is, but someone else said on another thread that it contains a few security patches.

yes, it start from japan by Mr. Tetsuyasu YAMADA
and new v14b(a+) released
no pre-emptive/LCD BUFF patch anymore on v14-
afaik, main problem is usbd-storage modules w/preemptive.
