Title: Decent Alternatives to Hancom Suite?
Post by: omro on May 28, 2004, 09:10:47 am
Woohoo! So glad this site is here! Have only just found it :-( Was beginning to give up on my Zaurus. I know the oold 5500s are a bit long in the tooth, but I still like mine. :-)

I\'ve been trying out the OpenZaurus alternatives, since those seem to be the only ROMs for the 5500 that are being developed still (please feel free to correct me if I\'m wrong). Since I can\'t get the hancom office suite working on the OZ, my main question is...

Are there any decent alternatives to the Hancom Office Suite for the Zaurus, specifically in terms of word processor/spreadsheet?

Thanks,

Owen

But I can. What seems to be the problem, we should be able to get it sorted.

I think you need the older version, something to with the shared lib.
Feel free to flame me if I\'m wrong.

Hadn\'t planned for this to be a helping me to get hancom working topic, but if you can then awesome.

I\'m currently on OZ 3.3.5 and I can\'t get any of the v1.5 hancom apps to work when installed into RAM.

I\'ve also tried OZ 3.2 and I can get the sheet app to work, but not the word. Something about missing architecture.

If there are alternatives, then that\'s cool too.

There\'s already another thread discussing this at the moment.

Which is why the emphasis of my original post was:

Read my reply.

You should unpack the ipk, then add a line starting \"Architechture\", and more importantly remove the empty line.

Worked for me (I think, but it was a long time ago).

I will give it a try, but I\'m not very good at such things.

BTW. I\'m using ROM OZ 3.3.6pre1, just playing with it. I can\'t installed Hancom Sheet at all. I tried to install it to Ram, it did it, it created the icon, but you tap the icon and you get told

Could not locate application hancomsheet

Any hints about this too?

A missing symlink or something?

A symlink somewhere would probably solve this...

Maybe try:
find / | grep hancomsheet
cd /usr/bin/
ln -s /path/to/hancomsheet hancomsheet

And on OZ 3.2 Hancom Sheet can\'t be installed in Ram, or so it seems, but there is barely any space in the root.

OZ is a little weird with app installation, though I might be doing it all wrong.

Generally you need an SD/MMC/CF card.

If you so desire you could remove some of the built in apps from root and then there will be room, but they are pretty useful so I wouldn\'t.

This behaviour compares well with ther latest Sharp ROMs - their ROMs are full (and you can\'t remove stuff from them), so you have to install the Hancom suite somewhere else (RAM or a storage card).

Omro, where did you get your version from? You do need to use the old version (it\'s really no different to the \'new\' version which comes with the latest ROMs). Also try running it from the terminal and see what the error message says. Also note that with OZ3.3.6pre1 you will need to use the compat libs to run the Hancom apps.

I haven\'t used OZ for a long time, but I used to have a 5500, wasn\'t the issue with running Hancom on OZ/OPIE that an older version was required? I got Hancom working but it was such an old version it was really bad, MS-Word/Excel compatibility was either non-existent or poor, I can\'t remember the details, either way, it was unusable.  I\'m not sure about TextMaker running on it, I\'m not aware of anyone in the beta group using OZ. Hancom and Java issues were the reason why I abandoned OZ. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure you will have to use a really crappy old version.  There was a OPIE alternative wordprocessor which was more of a text editor with formatting and saved docs as HTML, it wasn\'t very good for general use and a spreadsheet too but I had problems with that. I ended up using tkcROM on my 5500, everything worked fine then.

Best of luck!

Are there any plans to port koffice or openoffice to the embedded platforms?

not that I have heard anything of, but as a previous post linked to a previous thread - Softmaker is planning and already has a beta for the Zaurus.
reading from the features, it is a very good office replacement for the Zaurus. Plus is it also has a spell checker, whcih Hancom didnt have.

I read that post and it sounds pretty cool. I was just wondering if there was going to be a free thing :-)
