Title: What is the best Zaurus E-mail program?
Post by: TonyOlsen on May 28, 2004, 06:05:09 pm
I\'m about to take the large leap and move over my e-mail to my Zaurus.  So, I want to make sure this next stepis taking with the right program because I\'ll be sticking with it for a long time.

I need e-mail that supports POP3, SMTP, attachements, HTML encoded e-mails, and Outlook protocols.  Calendar functionality from e-mail meeting invitations would be nice but is not required.  Backwards compatibility with my existing e-mail program (Outlook Express) is NOT required, since I\'ll be starting over with new history files anyways...

Compression would be nice because of harddrive space limitations.

I\'m running Qtopia on Zaurus SL-C860.

Which e-mail program for the Zaurus is the best, and why?  What are the pro\'s and con\'s of each?

Thanks in advance!    (You guys rock!!  Thanks for your continued help!  )

Your best bet is QTMail (Sharp default). It supports everything you listed and is very easy to use. And I think it workd on the C860.

But I don\'t know what \"Outlook protocols\" are, so I dunno if it supports that.

Other than that, tkcMail might work (never used that one, so I can\'t really say).

I have great luck with the default email program. It is super easy to set up, and they have a solution to large emails: you can set a size limit, and if the email exceeds the limit, the message will download without the attachment. You can retrieve the large attachment with one click if you need it. I don\'t know how the compression works, but I hold several hundred emails on my 5500. If you want, you can have your email save to an SD card or periodically move them to the SD card very easily if you have space issues.

The only downside is I have not figured out an easy way to purge many emails at once...it is an all-or-nothing thing as far as I can tell.

I really wish there was a way to highlight emails and delete the selected emails without opening them.  But I haven\'t figured out a way to do it.  Otherwise, the Sharp email program is fine.

Take it from someone (one of MANY) who wasted their money on tkcMail - it is seriously broken.  No SSL, no IMAP, have to configure  every time it starts.  TONS of problems!

You could also take a look at Sylpheed and run it under XQt (http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/ (http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/)). It does POP3, IMAP4, NNTP (News) and SMTP AUTH. The version available on the XQt web site doesn\'t do IMAP over SSL but it can be re-compiled with SSL enabled.

Does the QTMail support different folders you can place your e-mail in (to sort the e-mail).  Also does it support multiple accounts?  (I want to use this work both my work AND home accounts)

What\'s the largest load anyone has ever had with QTMail?  Can it handle 1 GB of e-mail archives (assuming I have the space for it?)

ThunderBird does e-mail?  It sounds like it does a lot... I\'ll have to look at it.  Is there a port for QTopia?  How does it compare to QTMail and others?  Pro\'s / Con\'s?

ThunderBird only does email.  They took a hammer to the Mozilla suite and shards were known as Firefox the browser (formerly known as Firebird, formerly known as Phoenix) and Thunderbird the mail client (formerly known as Minotaur).

Hi Chaps,

does anybody know if there is a version of QtMail out there that allows AUTH SMTP? If yes I would be very happy to use this simple mailer. As it stands at the moment I do not have mobile mail and all the suggested apps here are to complicated for me :-(

The built-in mail program on the SL-C860 does AUTH SMTP.

What's the story with Thunderbird and Zaurus?  Is Thunderbird a good e-mail solution for the Zaurus?  Is the VGA 640x480 layout large enough for the Thunderbird layout?  Is the machine fast enough?  Is 64 MB enough memory?

Also... is Thunderbird open-source?  Could Mozilla of today become the microsoft of tomorrow?  (I don't know so I have to ask).

Could Mozilla's Thunderbird (E-Mail), Sunbird (Calendar), and Firebird (Browser) become the new standard for the Zaurus backbone?  I searched for topics that may have already discussed this and couldn't find many.

Could thunderbird be compiled for the QTopia environment?  (I don't understand the differences between the various environments and why some software works on some and not on others).

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks,

...but I like my SUV e-mail program.

Can the new pine do inline graphics and sound?  How embedded video and color?

I'm sure the thunderbird discussion has been here before somewhere but I couldn't find it.  Is it because it reall hasn't been discused before or do people just not like it that much?  ...or has noone ever thought of running Thunderbird on the Zaurus before?

Specifically, I'm thinking of the following arangement:

Linux Live CD (with Mozilla thunderbird, Firefox and Sunbird on maybe Knoppix) with a USB SD card adapter and my SD card.  All of the e-mail and settings are on the card and I card view and download new e-mail from any computer I happen to be at (using the live Linux CD) and my Zaurus.  It's my new idea of mobility... or was it "Nobility"?

It's interesting that so much time is spent trying to get PDA programs to act more like desktop programs... and yet there often isn't the thought of simply taking the desktop programs and running them directly on the PDA itself.  That's the beauty of Linux PDA's! (especially the one with VGA screens, huge harddrives, 400+ MHz processors, and clamshell keyboards...     )

I'm using Firefox, Thunderbird, and while soon be using Sunbird on my desktop.  Forget about the world of "syncing" PDAs with the desktop and instead let the PDA BECOME the desktop.

...or am I alone in my dream?

For functionality:
i telnet to my school account and use Pine to send and forward emails. If there's anything worth archiving locally, I use the default sharp email program.

For Pleasure:
Thunderbird in the x/qt debian enviroment looks nice and receiving email (IMAP or POP3) is fast enough, if you don't mind the 1-2min thunderbird start up time. But when you try to send or forward, it's painfully slow because it going to pop up another window, which is heavy for the x/qt debian. I only use it occasionally.

Somewhere in between:
Sypheeld(-claws) in the x/qt debian is a lite email solution. Sypheeld to Thunderbird kinda like Dillo to Firefox. Haven't tried it much. But seems all the features are there. But again not as fast as telnet+Pine.

Nobody seems to have mentioned OMPI - of the KDEPim suite from zautrix.

The KDEPIM contains the KO/PI, KA/PI and OMPI. OMPI is the email component - of course you can use all integrated together (OMPI fetches email addresses of contacts from KA/PI - the addressbook), or independantly.

While OMPI does work flawlessly with POP3 and IMAP too (I use it for POP3 emails), there are some desgin flaws, or rather some design differences from other common email programs (like the Srap email program itself).

But if you adjust to the differences, then you are fine. It is fast, loads up very fast and is equivalent to the Sharp email prog, though personally the Sharp email prog is better in overall design and functionality while I feel the OMPI needs some ironing out before it become that intuitive. The only thing is the Sharp email only communicated with the default Sharp DTM based addressbook and not with KA/PI which is a better addressbook.

Note : works with the Sharp compatible ROM's - not with the X/QT i believe.

I really like the KDEPIM suite, but Kopiemail is really broken (as of 2.0.12)
IMAP was broken a couple of versions ago, and my single POP3 server will not work (works in Kmail on SuSE, QTMail and Thunderbird).
The interface is also pretty awkward to me.
My preference on the Z is QTmail simply because it does what it's supposed to (can't say as much about the other default PIM apps). Doesn't seem to integrate with the KDEPIM suite though

If not then I dont think any of these can work with Hotmail (except using the Opera browser itself)

Nothing that couldn't be fixed by doing a port of [a href=\"http://hotwayd.sourceforge.net/]hotwayd/hotsmtpd the POP3/SMTP to HTTPMail gateway daemons[/url].

Yes, it's already there.  Just go to Options --> Set multiSelect Mode.  You can select as many messages as you want and delete them all in one go!

Still I find QtMail smoother and more stable than KOpieMail.  That's also the reason why I am still sticking with Sharp ROM, though pdaXrom is becoming more and more tempting...

No, you are not alone.  I got no desktop/laptop at home now (a rented room in an old house actually) and have been working on my C860 only, then exchange files with my office PC via usb or email.  I use QtMail, TextMaker and KO/Pi so heavily that my Z becomes a genuine portable office in one hand (perhaps in a pocket too)!

Just one question: What is the most efficient way to send email data stored on memory cards back to desktop email client (such as Outlook Express)?

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=69478\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Uhm, the fact that there is no IPK on that page is stating the obvious -- that's
why I wrote doing a port of, not installing. As for helping, I'm afraid I'm
lacking the resources needed to do so.

For one, building hotwayd requires a whole bunch of prerequisites (AFAIK an
iconv-enabled libxml2 and Cyrus SASL which in itself might need some prereqs
to build that I am not aware of -- so far I've only built hotwayd on a desktop Linux
system with a fairly good software environment), which most likely turns the
building process into a day long exercise if you want to do it for the Z.

Since I personally have no need for it on the Z itself, putting in that kind of effort
is not really justifiable given my schedule, and even if I did, I probably couldn't
come up with enough time to package it into something easily installed and
usable, let alone supporting it.

On top of that I wouldn't be able to do much in the way of testing, as I only have
access to an SL-5500 and none of the larger/later models (i.e. like you C-3000).

As for my post, I just wanted to give a pointer for people unaware of the fact
that yes, Hotmail access can indeed be done using a regular POP3/IMAP
client with the appropriate software installed -- even on the Z.

Best regards,
Chris.

Sounds really good.  But there's a catch.

A friend fixed pine_4.55.arm.ipk for me so it would install on my sl5500 running Sharp 2.38, but he said it will be confusing to use on the Z's tiny console.

I'm disabled with the Z being my only computer access.

Has anyone recompiled / tweaked it to work well on ROM 2.38 or 3.1x?
Recompiling and major tweaking are beyond my ability to learn right now.

Also, can someone tell me how it compares to mutt and qtmail?  I've looked through the manual and am I correct in understanding it only does IMAP and not POP?

Thanks for any assistance,

sdjf

Hi all,

The biggest problem with QtMail on the Sharp ROM is it's lack of support for SSL.  Almost all mail services (even gMail) are using this today, making the app unusable.  If there's a way to enable SSL please let me know, but I'm pretty sure you can't.

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14283&hl= (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14283&hl=)

The New Cacko ROM already has Stunnel enabled and installed, so one step is already donw for you.

It also has the necessary Stunnel.conf files as well as POP3 and SMTP.conf in seperate conf files under /etc/stunnel directory.
So using the new Cacko, you just need to tewk existing setup a bit.

stunnel is a way to ssl apps that are not ssl aware.  I'm trying for a setup that will use fetchmail, procmail, msmtp/postfix/sendmail and a pop server (mac mini and/or sl-c760) on a server at home.  I will then use the 3100 to retrieve the mail securely.  This proposed method seems good because I will not have to spend as much time locking down the pop and smtp ports and will only use one port.

Currently road runner does not allow smtp relaying (for good reasons) and only has non-ssl pop (not good for retrieving mail over the internet).

BTW does pine render html well?

Just adding SSl support will enable the Sharp email prog to receive (and send) Gmail POP. And you can also send mail via Gmail's own SMTP server (a great boon when you are connected thru a free Wifi hotspot).

I used my zaurus for my Gmails for my job search exclusively. Didn't have to reply on office mail id for those quick contacts to headhunters and all.

Is it possible using the default mail program to set folders to be synced for offline use? I had the default up and running using IMAP with my mail server, and all of my email headers would appear, but when I exited email and went back in it had all disappeared, and then had to be downloaded again. It would be great to be able to set it up to sync selected folders for offline use.

If the default app is unable to do this, are there any others that provide good integration with an IMAP server? including offline use?

Which model and ROM are you running?  The answer will depend on that.

I am suspicious that it may not be that IMAP is broken but that it's a qtopia issue.

On my 2.38, I stopped using the GUI to call qtmail as if I tapped too hard or long, it would open qtmail several times and close them in reverse order, totally forgetting about the POP mail I had already downloaded.

I solved the problem by starting qtmail from the console.

The other reason could be it doesn't finish writing it's index files because of a bus error...overloaded memory.  You won't see that if you don't run from command line.   My Z forgets that it's downloaded mail and downloads multiple copies if I'm not careful!  They don't show up in qtmail but do show when I examine the inbox from the console.

Don't know if what I'm saying applies to your particular ROM, but IMO these are issues worth considering.

I can tell you that tkcMail does IMAP but my Version: 2.1-050405 copy screws up the date and time stamp info, seeming to be hard-coded at GMT, won't give me access to attachments, is unable to display email with certain character combos in it (such as >>), erratically eats characters in outgoing email (i.e., symbols like = and `) and  re-downloads any IMAP emails I may have erased when off-line.

Now, I don't know much about IMAP but I do know that the only way I can be sure of not downloading the same IMAP email again with tkcMail is to do my erasing while online.  I'm afraid this may be a standard feature of IMAP.  Does anyone know?

Lots of people like Mutt and Pine and I'd suggest you check them out.  They are more work to install, but at least you can configure them to your own liking.

With all my problems with tkcMail, I'm still using it as it does generally perform better than the qtmail in 2.38, but that isn't saying much.  I just haven't had the  time it would take to switch to Mutt or Pine.

hmmm... I used to use pine at Uni (a looong time ago) - maybe I'll have a look at that. I've found that I can ssh from konsole to my webhost and run pine through the konsole, but it's not much use for writing emails offline.

I've had the zaurus for 4 days now, and am very impressed, it's just a bit disappointing that there aren't many full featured mail apps. I'll give pine or mutt a go next week and see how they go. Any pointers to a howto to configure pine/mutt - especially for offline use?

I've had the zaurus for 4 days now, and am very impressed, it's just a bit disappointing that there aren't many full featured mail apps. I'll give pine or mutt a go next week and see how they go. Any pointers to a howto to configure pine/mutt - especially for offline use?

Haven't had time to study this thoroughly, but bam put up info on his site on setting up pine and it should be helpful:

One cool thing is that procmail, fetchmail, and msmtp can be used with either pine or mutt, so if you don't like one, you'll have a lot of the work done for setting up the other.

If you need to do multiple outgoing addresses, it can be done with msmtp but I haven't got the details worked out well enough to post an example.

One thing to be careful of is you can't just say  'auth on' in .msmtprc as some servers are picky and you have to specify exactly which kind of authorization you're using.   That should automatically configure appropriately when you say  'auth on', but it doesn't always do so.

Please note that we have a mutt package for download on http://www.hermocom.com/en/download (http://www.hermocom.com/en/download)

It is supposed to work on Cacko ROM (Sharp ROM) but may also work under different ROMs.
