Title: Web Browser for OZ
Post by: omro on June 07, 2004, 06:14:05 am
Hey guys, just a general question.

If I want to put a web browser on OZ, should I use the Opera files that came with the Sharp Rom or is there a much better alternative?

Thanks,

Owen

Why don\'t you visit the openzaurus feed and install Konqueror?

Because Opera is a thousand times better than the Konqueror that comes with OZ.

Ok, so I've installed Opera 6, but none of the icons are displayed? Is there a path setting somewhere I should change?

Thanks.

this is the unofficial button fix i found by searching for it, just copy and paste these lines into the console.

[opera button fix]

1) mkdir /usr/share/opera
2) ln -sf /opt/QtPalmtop/opera/buttons /usr/share/opera/buttons

I think the fix actually was the following (which always worked for me)

# ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera /usr/share/opera

How, or where did you install Opera??

I tried to install it without an sd card and ran out of space. After some fussing around the sd card install worked; however it required ipkg-link to install it.

I am curious how you installed Opera??

Thanks,
Dan

Yep, it's pretty big so if you don't have a C machine you'll have to install it to an ext2 formatted storage card.

It should link itself, but sometimes you do need to run ipkg-linnk to refresh the symlinks.

So you've got it right, don't worry.

I'm trying to get Opera 7 (downloaded from the ZUG site) running on my 5500 with OZ 3.3.5, but whether I install it to the RAM disk or SD card, it segfaults (SIGSEGV) immediately after loading. Has anyone else encountered/fixed this? (I searched the ZUG forums, but didn't come up with much that helped.)

Thanks,
Tim

I get the same problem, I get a bus error woth Konqueror, and Opera flashes for a sec looking like its going to work, then seg faults.

Try opera 6 (there's no real difference afaik other than the voice command stuff)?

I'm not sure about this, but I think Opera 7.x adds support for the media type 'handheld' in CSS.

In plain English, if a Web site has a stylesheet optimised and set up specifically for handhelds (PDAs, smartphones, etc.), and there is a link to the stylesheet with 'media="handheld"' in the tag, a capable Web browser will use this stylesheet automatically, and you won't get the "tiny corner of the page" problem you usually get with Web sites.

Sadly, very few sites have "handheld" stylesheets associated with them, but it's a neat feature to have access to. Unfortunately, the Konqueror Embedded browser doesn't support "handheld" CSS, and neither does Opera 6. (This really surprised me, as Opera provides some useful docs on their site for creating specialised "handheld" stylesheets - here's one (http://www.opera.com/products/smartphone/dev/portal/)).

If Opera 7 does support this feature, that's enough of a reason for me to try it... though if it won't work on my Z, at least Opera 6 allows me to use Small Screen Rendering. Not quite what I wanted, but it's the next best thing

Might try it, anyway - thanks for the idea,

Tim
