My Zaurus C860 has has to be sent back under warentee due to a screen issue. I\'ve owned a 5500 which I\'ve given to my brother and had not issues, and cannot find many issues listed on the web related to faulty units. How do other people find their C7/8xx reliability?
p.s. I\'ve bought a cheap HP iPaq to get me through the send / repair / return to Japan, and I know now why I\'ve always bought Zaurii!

I\'ve had a 760 for some time now ... one pixel stuck on red, but no other problems. Even dropped it from about a metre onto a wooden floor, thank God, but nonetheless ...

No problems whatsoever with my 760

About 6 months after I got my Z, the sound went haywire. Would only play normal sounds while the screen was in flipped and layed back mode (classic pda mode?), if the screen was closed or open in laptop mode, screeching pops were heard instead of sound from the internal speakers and headphones. After 1 week of this the screen kept flickering when in laptop mode.
Took it back to the shop I brought it from and 2 weeks later got it back from Sharp. They had replaced the \"unit\" from taling to the repair rep (in my poor Japanese) I\'m pretty sure that the repalced the whole hinge mechanism.
No problems since then, but I have made sure that neither of my children (3 and 1) get hold of my Z just in case.

Bought C860 several months ago. Screen backlighting became intermittant several weeks ago. So far have been able to move screen and restore the backlight but it is a major PITA & I know that eventually it will have to go back for repairs. So just ordered a 2nd C860. My Z(s) gotta be 24/7/366 mission critical. No avoidable downtime allowed.
Anyhow, when the first one comes back from repair, I can use the \"backup\" one to finally let myself \"play\" with all the alternative ROMs & other brick risky stuff that I can\'t try with a system that has to rock\'n roll constantly. Just like I once kept backups for my HP200LXs in place & loaded.
Past experiences with laptops & palmtops has been that screen & keyboard issues are usually the primary pitfalls.
My first \"portable\", a Dauphin 286 \"LapPro\" (16.5 *pounds* with the 90 minute lead acid battery pack! 12Mhz CPU! 10\" diag mono CGA LCD display! 40Mb HD! top of the line), died the real death when the screen went south. Many, many mango seasons ago.
So the C860 still get top marks so far.

Like you Bob I just got a used C700 to "backup" my C860.
I run different ROMS on both machines and thats kinda nice (could dual-boot though I suppose...) but mainly if one goes down the other is available.
The C700 is out of warranty though so if that goes I'm hosed. But being over a year old (I have the old warranty) with no problems indicates to me it should (fingers crossed) last a few more years yet...
PS. Also I can't seem to go anywhere without a Zaurus in tow - was Wi-Fi'ing with maslovsky in a Moscow cafe last night we had *three* zaurii (SL-C700, SL-C750 and SL-C860) on the table with assorted number of cards.... now I shoulda have had my camera there!!!!
cheers

THAT would have been a sight! All clamshells. Bring your camera next time & post us the image!!

ya...
*IF* a clamshell model comes out with WIFI built in.. I'll just HAVE to buy another.
*sigh*

My C760 suffered from the dead charger problem. I have now received it back from repair (sent it to Dynamism who sent it to Sharp).
I'm being very careful with it now and have just replaced the plug on my AC adapter so that I can't reverse the polarity by mistake. Since I'm in NZ I had to buy a 240V adapter, but I made sure to get one that was rated correctly (5V 1A) and switch-mode of course! As it had a removable DC plug I was able to accidently reverse the polarity a couple of times, which I fear may have caused the charger's death (not sure though since Dynamism/Sharp haevn't told me what they fixed).

the normal plug from sharp doesn't seem to have a polarity preference..
I know I've plugged mine into US outlets with both orientations.

Is that not normal for AC current ?

I think the polarity protector devices for 110/115VAC plugs are to ensure proper grounding only. Shouldn't matter in this case (charging non grounded device)..

I think he's refering to the DC plug that goes into your Z nit the pins that go into your wall, ac does not care what pins go where - except for earth pin if you have one, but the polarity of the DC end of and ac adapter does have polarity and it is very important to have that polarity correct when plugging into your Z (or other electrical devices)
Can't show it properly in ascii but you'll see somethingl like
+ ---( .--- - Showing that the inner ring is negative and the outer is positive
or
- ---( .--- + Showing that the inner ring is positive and the outer is negative
Reversing these is a good way to blow a fuse on alsmost all DC devices

Good eyes, Stu! Totally missed that till you pointed it out.

yup, that makes sense.
Of course, it costs so little to make the device not accept reverse polarity, but if they assumed
you'd only use their power supply, I can see how reversing the feed could cause damage.
