Hi,
Please help me out if anyone know how to restore or reinstall the Zaurus SL5600. Currently, my Zaurus 5600 is wide out. In addition, anyone try to use NAND to restore the Zaursus 5600 successfully?
thanks;

Hi derek4100,
I received your PM and read your posts on the board. I would not advise doing a nand restore unless all else fails.
If you can still bring up the maintenance menu after a reset (without using update), select format and that should reset your Z to the original settings, if not please post here and I will try to help.
Also make sure your CF-card is formatted with vfat (fat-16).

Greg2, hi Greg2,
I flip the switch on the back of the zuarus to \"Repalce Battery\", press reset button, and then flip the switch back to \"Normal Operation\". After all, I hold the \"OK\" button and then press \"ON/OFF\". Yes, it give me a Maintenance Nemu with 4 options. cancel, error check, format and update. I select format but there is nothing happen. Please help me on what is the next step.
Thank you very much

I formatted my 5600 a few days ago. I followed the instructions exactly as given in the ROM update section in this group. once the maintainence menu comes up, I connect the Z to AC power and use the cursor keys to select \'Format\'. Then I press the middle button. It asks for confirmation and I select \'Yes\' and press the middle button again. It takes a few minutes and my Z is back to \'factory settings\' (not exactly, since it came with an earklier ROM which was upgraded to v1.32, so after a format it goes back to v1.32 & not the earlier one).

I select format but there is nothing happen. Please help me on what is the next step.
Does the screen go blank? Does it stop responding, or what?
According to your other thread you have used the proper files and procedure, but it sounds like you have used a corrupt file or file system on your CF-card.
This is what I would do:
D/L new files.
Format your CF-card with Fat-16(Try a different card if you have one).
Use the updater.sh that is with the files you use(Sharp, TKC, Zynergy, whatever).
Rename your files accordingly and try to flash again using the same procedure.
If you have no luck trying to use update from the menu, please post.
Good luck,
Greg

wizzard, wizzard, hi, thanks for response. Further, can you email or let me know all the require files you used and the procedure you uesed. I presure my Zaurus sl5600 is wide out after I format it. Please help me out the Zaurus sl5600 back to original.

derek4100,
Sorry but I didn\'t understand what you meant by I presure my Zaurus sl5600 is wide out after I format it.
Could you please clarify? I outlined the procedure in my previous post (see above). That\'s all there is to it. This should at least take you back to the Sharp ROM v1.21. Did you try it? What is the result? If you can get back to factory settings then updating won\'t be a problem. I suggest that you first try to get it back to factory settings and if that works then you can try updating. I can help you with that.

I\'m sorry but I don\'t understand what you mean by this.
After you select format does it ask for confirmation and allow you to select yes? If not, please explain in detail.
Greg
Edit:
wizzard must type faster then I, but nevertheless if you explain your problem a little better one of us will help

wizzard, Yes, I try to restore the zaurus back to the factory setting. However, I try different procedure and it is still not function.
-
Isn\'t it turning on even on AC power? Is your battery charged? Try removing the battery, wait for some time, and then replace it.
What happens when you put it on AC power? Does the charge light glow steadily?
Did you first slide the slider/switch in the back to \"replace battery\" and then opening the cover to reset? Did you slide it back to \"Normal Operation\" before bringing up the maintainence menu?
Please let us know these things.

What procedure did you try exactly?
-
wizzard, Yes, when I put it on AC Power, the charge light glow steady. Below is the procedure I follow. After step 13 of the procedure below, my Zaurus went black on screen and I can not turn it back on from there.
1. Make sure the AC power jack is connected.
2. Download the ROM image: zImage, initrd.bin, updater.sh.
If the filenames are different, change them to the above or else the zaurus will not be able to find them. The filenames are case sensitive. Note the capital I in zImage.
3.Put the ROM files in the root directory of your CF
card /mnt/cf (maybe possible with SD).
4. Turn the zaurus over and flip the battery case switch to \"Replace Battery\".
Remove the battery cover but don\'t remove the battery
5. Push the reset button on the lower right of the battery compartment
with your stylus
6. Replace the battery cover and switch to \"Normal Operation\"
7. Flip the zaurus over and simultaneously press the \"Cancel\" and \"OK\" buttons
8. The Maintenance Screen will display. Choose \"Update\"
9. After the update, flip the zaurus over again and switch to \"Replace Battery\"
10. Open the battery compartment, dont remove the battery. Press the reset switch.
11. Close the battery compartment, switch to \"Normal Operation\"
12. Flip the zaurus over and press simultaneously the \"Cancel\" and \"OK\" buttons again.
13. The Maintenance screen comes up again. Select \"Format\"
14. The zaurus will reboot to your new Operating System.

This appears to be more serious than I had first thought.
The procedure you followed is the correct one. Did you see any message (error or otherwise) during the update? What happens if you repeat instructions No. 9 to 12? Does the maintainence menu come up? If it does you can do an \"Error check\". If the menu doesn\'tcome up, then you probably have to send it to Sharp.
-
wizzard, the nemu does not come up at all. Thanks so much again.

derek4100,
I am very sorry. The only thing I can think of is to let it charge overnight till the charge light goes off, then remove battery for a few hours, put in the battery again and try to bring up the menu.
Post your problem at the 5xxx forum here also. Hopefully someone else will come up with a solution.
When I updated the ROM of my 5600, I used the USB connection with my PC. Later on, I also used the CF card to flash the updated kernel without any problem.

Make sure your battery has a full charge then remove it for about 2 hr. Replace it and try to access the maintenance menu. If you can access the maintenance menu try to update rom with new files.
If you absolutely can\'t access the maintenance menu then you can try the service menu by pressing D+M and the hard reset button in the battery compartment. If you can access this menu be very careful in there. Do not do anything yet, just use the cancel key to close.
Before proceeding please read these threads because if you make a mistake in the service menu you can brick your Z!

My Disclaimer:
I will not be responsible for any damage to your Zaurus caused by using the suggested instructions in this post.
Now you must D/L a NAND file.(DBK file)
Inuyasha stated in another tread that he was going to post a NAND image of the Sharp Rom 1.32 ...so you can PM him or use this one.
SYST5600.DBK:
http://www.galacticslacker.com/zaurus_sl5600.shtml (http://www.galacticslacker.com/zaurus_sl5600.shtml)
Note: I have never used this file and only know of it\'s existence threw this forum. I have my own 66.1mb DBK file but I\'m on 56K dail-up so I can\'t send it to you, sorry.
Now rename the file SYST5600.DBK (if not already) and place on a FAT-16 formatted CF-card and insert in your Zaurus.
Make sure the AC power is connected.
Now is your last chance to ask any questions if your not sure what you are doing!
Open the service menu by pressing D+M and the hard reset button in the battery compartment.
Only navigate with the cursor keys(do not use stylus in service menu) and select with the center of cursor key, or use the cancel key to exit without change.
Now go to the 4th menu using the cursor keys and select #3 Nand Flash Restore with the center of the cursor key, or the \'OK\' key.
This will take a few minutes to complete, then you have to do a hard reset.
Good luck
Greg

Greg2,
Your instructions are lucid and easily understandeable. IMHO this should be placed in the \'HowTo\' section along with the (if possible) NAND backups. This\'ll be a great help to anyone who has bricked their Z. Thanks for the great advice. Hope this works for derek4100.
-
wizzard, hi Wizzard,
I wonder you have any idea on how to send the device back to Sharp. The device warranty may be void. If you know there is a way to clean this mess up or maybe Sharp can restore the OS and ship back to me. if you know someone do this before or have same problem Please let me know.
thanks
Hung Nguyen

Did you try what Greg2 suggested first?
Where are you located and when did you get your Z. AFAIK Sharp has a 1year warranty.
-
derek4100,
Any updates on the status of your Z?
-
I have the same problem
Try to do step by step pervious howto from greg2
And only thing i can do is going to diag or service menu
Ive checked NAND Flash (SUM)
KERNEL1 has NG
ROFLSYS nas NG
PRESET has NG
Any help ?

hi -
thanks for the reply, but thats not the DBK i need, as far as i can tell, that has info on reflashing if you can get past the maintenence menus, but no matter what i selectin the (Cancel+OK) maintenence menu i get a black screen. i need to replace the whole thing from the D+M+reset maintenence menu.
thanks!
