Title: QPSword Questions
Post by: wmadan on June 11, 2004, 09:49:47 pm
1. Has anyone been able to get the personal commentary module working on a Z (I have a C860)?
2. Is there anyway to set a font size?

TIA,

Bill

I\'ve had some trouble with qpsword.

Biggest issue I have is that starting at about Luke 4 in the KJV module, things go nutty. John 1 is basically blank.

I have had other weirdnesses like that too, on all Sharp based ROMs.

I wonder if development has ceased on it. It has been a while since a release and there are some bugs and needed features, like zooming.

Are you using the zipped files or the ipks?  I\'ve not had any problem loading the ipk modules.

I\'ve not had any real problems with QPSword; however, I haven\'t been able to figure out how to add my personal commentary to the personal commentary module.  I submitted an email to QPSword but have not received a response.

Hi,

Thinking of getting a Sharp Zaurus....

What are the available Bible Programs available for the Zaurus?? I know Qpsword is one of them, but am quite unsure of a few things ...

1. How fast searching for words is... E.g. Search for all the occurences of the word 'love' from both the old and new testaments?

2. Is it true that QPSword lets you use every module available from the SWORD project?

3. Can I search for Strong's numbers in a Bible?

Any one with a zaurus running this software can enlighten me?

Thanks alot for replying.

zacchaeuz,

In QPSword, to search all occurrences of "love" in the KJV took 17.97 seconds. Clicking on each hit to view it is instantaneous.

I have Nave's and TSK loaded and they work well. Since I don't have Strong's loaded, I can't comment on that.

As I have indicated in my first post, I can't figure out how to compose my own personal commentary in QPSword, and judging by the response, no one else has either. If you run the Windows version, you will see that the personal commentary is just like any other "commentary" or reference book you add to the program, but it allows you to make your own running commentary as you go.

The other problem I have with QPSword is the font can't be adjusted to a larger size.

The author of the program says all the books in the Sword Project will work. Every one I have loaded has (with the exception of the personal commentary).

The other Bible program I have is one that costs $10 and comes with the NASB. The link is here: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDet...txtSearch=Bible (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productType=2&optionId=1_9_2&jid=8F7879DF4EFF7F825677B48B4AF6ECFD&platformId=9&siteId=1&productId=62050&advSearch=true§ionId=0&keyWords=Bible&catalog=80&txtSearch=Bible)

This program is made specifically for the SL-5500/5600. It will work on the SL-C860 and other clamshell Zaurii, but only if you do not select to run the program in landscape mode. This means the fonts are real jagged.

Where can I get those bible .ipks?  If not, how do you install the zips????

For some reason the feed at www.crosswire.org is down. That is where I got the ipks. You will see the link to QPSword there.

Here's wiki page to read on installation: http://www.handhelds.org/z/wiki/qpsword (http://www.handhelds.org/z/wiki/qpsword)

Thanks, but I found v0.5.2 on the feed here, and figured out how to get different books installed including the lexicons and webster's dic.

I moved /usr/share/sword to /mnt/card/usr/share/sword
Then simlinked it back using ln -s /mnt/card/usr/share/sword /usr/share/sword

Then all you have to do is download the "raw" zip files and extract them as they stand into the /mnt/card/usr/share/sword dir.

Doc,

What Zaurus do you have? I have a SL-C860.

Have you tried loading the personal commentary?

Have you tried adjusting the font size?

No, I just wanted the data so I haven't monkey'd with the font size or the personal notes.  Maybe I will, but I mainly just wanted a searchable bible and webster's dictionary.  I got it all working, and I got a message back from www.crosswire.org/sword noting that they fixed the problem with the links to the ipk's from their website.  It is all back up and working.  Cheers....

I haven't had any problems with the zipped modules, although I haven't tried the personal commentary and mainly use the RSV. I have unzipped everything under a 'sword' directory on my MMC card and linked to that from /home/zaurus/.sword (On an old 5500 ROM you may have to link from /home/root/.sword), like this:

ln -s /mnt/card/.sword /home/zaurus/.sword

Everything works out of the box like that.

BTW, searching the entire Bible for 'love' on my 5600 took just under 14 seconds (not overclocked, it's 11 seconds when overclocked to 471MHz)

Sorry I'm a bit late to be contributing to this thread, but I'll add my $0.02 anyway:

The latest QPSword KJV module changed from old GBF markup to new OSIS markup. Unfortunately the new markup seems not to have been properly debugged, hence the corruption or loss of some chapters, e.g. in John's gospel. Also Strongs lookup does not work.

The workaround is to roll back to the previous version, with GBF markup, which works fine, both for reading and for finding Strongs numbers. You can find this module at:

http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/zau....4.1_noarch.ipk (http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/zaurusold/sword-kjv-w-strongs_1.4.1_noarch.ipk)

Hope that helps.

Thanks jubjub!!  I've been fighting with qpsword for over a year now. I was about to start another thread and see if maybe someone wanted to upgrade qpsword. I found your late response in a search.

It works great now!

Seems odd that the current KJV module right off of the the Sword web site is corrupt, but this one you linked to works great!

www.olivetree.com do some simple bible reading software for PalmOS, windows CE and Symbian, but sadly not for Zaurus.

I'm not a programmer, so I dont know what's involved in making a compatible reader for the olivetree files.  As it's all text based, I doubt it would be too hard.

It would be great to have a reader compatable with olivetree files as there are so many bibles available.  Sword has none of the bibles I'd usually use (NIV / ESV / NASB).

Would anyone be interested in producing an olivetree compatible bible reader for zaurus?  I dont know how OliveTree works, you may have to distribute the software through them.  I dont know if they would assist you at all?

It would be great if there was some better bible software out there for the Z, QPsword kind of does the job, but fairly badly, and there is not a large selection of commonly used texts available.

I've emailed olivetree, and they've said they will consider the zaurus / qtopia platform.

This doesent mean much at the moment, but if they will go ahead with it with programming assistance from the zaurus community, is there anyone who would be able to provide some assistance?

Any programmers who would like to help develop a very good and comprehensive Bible reader for the Zaurus?

I dont know how likely it is that they will want to develop this, but I want to know if there would be support for them if they did decide to  go with it.  If there are people willing to help with development, it may make olivetree more likely to go ahead with it, as it will make their job much easier.

As i've previously said, I am not a programer but i would be willing to help in any way possible, e.g. documentation / coordination.  Also, I dont think the program would be able to be open source due to copyrights etc.

Please let me know if you, or anyone you know would be willing to help.  This is not definitely going to happen, I've just made one enquiry, so don't get your hopes up too much, but it would be good to know how much backing there is for the idea.

They are great people over there at Olivetree. I own a couple of their Bibles and what I like about them is they let you use them on different platforms, unlike Laridian, which makes you buy the reader software and bibles for each PDA platform you have.

I understand the copyright issues involved, but geez, it just makes sense to me if I bought an electronic version of my favorite Bible and I no longer own a Pocket PC, I should be able to use it on a Palm if that's my only device.  So, I like Olivetree for their realistic licensing policy.

Anyway, I have requested that they produce a Symbian Series 60 reader for my Nokia smartphone and offered to beta test it when they developed it. It took a couple of months, but  they have done it. I am beta testing the release now. So, from first hand experience I can vouch that Olivetree does listen to their customers.

I'll email them and ask them for a Zaurus version.

Thanks for that info. It gave me more than half of my internal storage back. Now I'm geting more modules.

BTW, I had to reverse the order of
"ln -s /mnt/card/usr/share/sword /usr/share/sword,"
so that it was "ln -s /usr/share/sword /mnt/card/usr/share/sword

Hi I installed qsword into my internal flash memory and was trying to move the /usr/share/sword to /mnt/cf/usr/share/sword.

I think I had linked the files in the following manner
ln -s /mnt/card/usr/share/sword /usr/share/sword.
Linking the reverse way granted me a Operation not permitted reply though.

After which, I installed the rsv ipk and was trying to install into my cf memory but it rejects saying that it required usage of main memory.  I even changed the DataPath in etc/sword.conf to that of .mnt/cf/usr/share/sword but to no avail.

With manual commang ipkg install sword_rsv.ipk -d /mnt/cf/usr/share/sword yielded error in not able to find package /usr/lib/ipkg/lists

I suspect my ln is not executed properly.  Has anyone install both qsword and the books modules into the cf memory instead of the internal flash memory?  Btw, is there a workable version of BibleTime on zaurus.  Am using C860.

Any help is appreciated.

Try installing into root.  The installer will put it into /usr/share/sword which is really /mnt/card/usr/share/sword since you did the link.

/mnt/card is your SDCard

With respect to BibleTime, it depends on KDE. If you install debian/X-QT you can see if gnome-sword works okay. The openzaurus rom has a bible program "dagger" which uses the sword libraries, but I couldn't get search to work last time I tried it. Someone also compiled a bible program for pdaXrom which uses wxwidgets.

Alternately, once you have moved your /usr/share/sword to sd card, you can just download the raw fiiles of all of the modules you want and copy them there.

To change font size, there's a workaround:
Make a symbolic link to the font you like, let say, helvetica_260_50_t10.qpf.
(If you already have unifont_160_50_t10.qpf, pls rename it so it won't be overwritten.)
ln -s helvetica_260_50_t10.qpf unifont_160_50_t10.qpf

Hello All,
I hate to jump in here, but I have an issue with qpsword v 0.5.1.  I cannot get the program to run on my familiar 0.8.2 ipaq 3850.  I have installed http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/qpe...r_0.5.1_arm.ipk (http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/qpe-swordreader_0.5.1_arm.ipk) and http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/swo..._1.4_noarch.ipk (http://www.crosswire.org/feeds/arm/ipk/sword-kjv-w-strongs_1.4_noarch.ipk) through the command prompt (ie.  ipkg install http://...) for each file.

I very briefly see the bible logo at the bottom of the screen before it goes away and nothing happens on my ipaq.

Does anyone here have any suggestions?  I have already reinstalled familiar linux 0.8.2 several times.  There is a pkg called "sword" in the ipkg package manager, should I install that instead of qpsword?

Thanks
Aaron Low

You need to install sword and opie-dagger from the 8.2 feeds.

Here's what I did after a fresh install of qpsword into internal flash:

mkdir /usr/mnt/card/sword
mkdir /usr/mnt/card/sword/mods.d
mv /usr/share/sword/mods.d/globals.conf /usr/mnt/card/sword/mods.d
rmdir /usr/share/sword/mods.d
rmdir /usr/share/sword
cd /usr/share
ln -s /usr/mnt/card/sword

Now if I want to install a module in .ipkg form I tell the installer to go ahead an use internal flash memory.  The installer follows the symbolic link and the modules actually get installed on the SD card!  Seems to work, but may not work with all modules.  I had a problem with sword-strongs-greek_1.3_noarch.ipk.  I'm using an SL-5600 with Watapon ROM.

-Phil
