Title: I\'m bored, what do YOU do with a CXXX when you\'re bored?
Post by: Omicron on June 19, 2004, 12:33:37 am
What are the best apps to use to while away the time in either a productive or non-productive way on the C860?

My personal favorite is movies, with MP3\'s a distant second.  Not too many games that run well in landscape and I have never, ever been able to get Doom or Nethack to run on my C860. (Read: Somebody WALK me thorugh every single little tiny step please....as I have tried too many times to count....Read: I am a loser  )

So beyond that, what wisks away the hours in line, when bored, waiting for a Dr. Appt, etc, etc ?????

This is like a poll, but not since I don\'t know all the best thing s to do....and please no \"try to be funny posts\" like \"play sit and spin with it when no one\'s looking\"

Hmmmm, never turn your back on just plain \'ol movies.  I travel a lot too, and spend lots of time on airplanes and sitting around bored in airport terminals.  But with my (count \'em 4 - 4Gb Hitachi drives), I can carry somewhere around 35 full-length movies with me with great video quality and great sound quality.  Plus...... I have a 2 Gb drive that has the entire Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit) in audio-book format to listen to.  And of course, TKCsky that operates my telescope and gives me tons of information about the universe-at-large.  Not to mentioin e-books..............

I love to play nes, snes, GB, GBC, and GBA games on my Sl-C760. Hours and Hours of fun when you are in the subway. There are over 2500 games!
*note* it is only legal to have the rom if you own the game.

I like to play sit and spin with it when no one\'s looking
I like spinning in my chair.
I like chairs.

When I\'m too bored I read eBooks on OpieReader while listening to oggs with the Media Player on Cacko QT 1.21b, with my headphone remote control and some Behringer HPX headphones, works great. (No nasty iPod for me ;-))  Doom is good fun for boredom or even an excess of anger. Haven\'t got NES or GBA emu working yet or a solution for playing Sonic the Hedgehog yet. I want a Pacman that uses the nice VGA properly.

Toppler is a fun game to play full-screen on the C760.  You have to hold down your stylus on the game\'s icon in order to set the option to play it full-screen.  Then the game will be upside down, but it is still playable.  You can use the arrow keys to move left and right and press the space bar to jump while moving or press the space bar while stationary to shoot out a ball.  The tetsu kernel is not smooth when playing Toppler, but the other overclocked kernel available in the Zaurus User\'s Group download area plays smoothly.  It is available at:

Learn to program. I spend most of my train hours writing programs and routines and stuff. The time flies incredibly quickly. More so than any other activity I\'ve encountered. Second to that would be reading eBooks, third  would be emulation, as mentioned above. Snes9x works really well.

For me it\'s music and eBooks.
I have a lot of books I\'ve bought in MS Reader format that I convert over to Mobipocket. They work really well in JustReader.

Note, I don\'t think JustReader can handle secure Mobipocket books, so don\'t buy any in that format.

Yep, a very worthy and rewarding use. I\'ve enjoyed many a tune and book with my trusty Z.

Trying to get some of my PhD done using Octave to plot/generally manipulate data.

Si

P.S. Then I generally become even more bored and go to the pub (without my Z as it might get wet :-))

Well, I hate to confess to it, but when I get bored, me & my C860 play chess. Shameful thing is that, unless I handicap the little snot heavily, it whups my donkey too often. But it really doesn\'t seem quite fair to handicap a player just because it is silicon based,  no matter how much better it plays than you do.

When I am completely humiliated (but still bored), I go off in a snit and sulk while playing pool on the C860. Just ME. Single player. THAT\'ll teach the little smart arse.

Its not so bad that the machines are getting smarter while *I\'m* getting older & dumber, but I do so resent it when they insist of rubbing my nose in the fact.

And, unlike my simple old 200LX, I can\'t even threaten this newer generation of machines with pulling all their batteries! Being bored is the LEAST of my problems! (G)

Well, since I _do_ fritter away most of my free time playing nethack (and posting on this board!), what\'s your issue with Nethack?
As far as I can tell, the QT version is as bug free as it gets (http://trolls.troll.no/warwick/nethack/ipk...3.4.2-2_arm.ipk (http://trolls.troll.no/warwick/nethack/ipk/qpe-nethack_3.4.2-2_arm.ipk)). A regular install, and turning off the magnification is all you need to do (that, and changing the tilesize to whatever you desire).
I like nethack so much, I initially installed Xqt just to play the X11 version of nethack (as it has the stats on the front, and allows me to use the keyboard exclusively without touching the stylus).

The rest of my \"bored\" time is spent reading ebooks, writing fiction, or trying to figure out how to get Xqt running the way I would like it (anyone else think a forum dedicated to Xqt would be useful?!?). I tend to listen to music when walking or in the subway (too noisy to do anything else really).

That looks like FCE Ultra the NES Emulator.  Znester is another NES emulator that works well on my c860.

Wow,  that ZNester program is GREAT (with full screen and full sound).

I coupled it with ZEMU and it works even better (make sure to select Settings->Frontend->by Qtopia in ZEMU and you will get FULLSCREEN use, otherwise command line will only give you a small area in the screen).

Here are the links...everything you need  to get you started:
ZNester Program (command Line) (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=979)
ZEMU (GUI, just set this up to call ZNester and add the folder that contains all the games and then you can simply select from the list to play a game) (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1176)
Great page to get you started with a good amount ROMS/Games (http://tbd.yi.org/nes/)

Keys for use.:
Arrows (obviously)
X and Z are ussually action buttons.
Cancel = Exit
Enter = Start game (when pressed at game title screen)

Note: The ROMS page says these are the  default controls, so if the above don't work try these (Cacko QT maps the Japanese keys to ALT and Control):
A - Alt
B - Control
Select - Tab
Start - Enter

Note:As with all Emulators and ROMS, please make sure to abide by copyrights laws, etc.  Thes games are generally only legal to download the ROMS if you own the actual game already (sort of as a backup).  For those of you who have web space or upload programs to various sites, make sure to never bundle an Emulator with a ROM or set of ROMS.

Don't know how many of these you might have already but I think they are great...

Productive...

FreeNoteQt - Definitely deserves more coverage - GREAT app, diagrams straight to PDF and easy to use too !
Apache-PHP + QwikiWiki - Great combination, run a little WIKI server - really comes into play with a good sized storage card.
Unison - Great way of synchronising your Wiki with your desktop version.
U-Bahn Navigator - Tube Map, Icons a bit small on SL-Cxx but works well enough.

Games

Punq - Little flea hopping game, run in Zoomed mode - lots of fun.

Development

Ruby 1.8 (follow the 1.6 links to the sourceforge site)
Ruby-Qte - QTE Bindings for Ruby with examples.
VisiScript - Good for testing small scripts, a bit quirky on save/load
