Title: Any iSync developer news at WWDC2004?
Post by: ganoe on June 30, 2004, 05:59:26 pm
I was under the impression that Apple might start to release some developer's info for iSync as the new Xcode and Tiger get close to release.  Was there any news announced on this at the developer's conference?

The only thing I've seen on the Apple site was at the bottom of the page for .mac Sync: "System-wide availability of sync services means that developers can now easily incorporate syncing capabilities into their applications. Tiger’s sync engine is extendable, so developers can go beyond synchronizing calendars, bookmarks and contact lists."  I hope this isn't just extendable for .mac, but for adding new devices to iSync.

I think I read some comment in one of the online-magazines which confirmed that there will be a system wide sync service and iSync will disappear.

And the API of the new sync service will be open to (all?) developers.

But if I read the availability announcement "1st half of 2005" as "not in 1st quarter 2005" there are still several months to wait for it.

That's longer-term good news then.  I've seen many others complaining that they had to pay for .mac just to be able to sync multiple OS X Macs.  It should also open up the Mac for syncing with plenty of other devices.  I'd really like to get my unsupported phone syncing with my Mac (as well as my Zaurus).

I have just found a screen shot of the new Sync Manager:
