Hi,
I've just got a Zaurus SL-C860, and I'd like to convert it to English (I can't read Japanese at all, so I don't know to configure it). How can I do that?
Note that AFAIK, there is no installed terminal! How can I connect to my Zaurus with a PowerBook under Linux? I have both a USB cable and an Ethernet LAN CF card for the Zaurus. However, nmap says that only 111/tcp is open.
TIA,
Vincent.

Unless you have a need for Japanese on your 860, I'd say take a look at the Cacko QT ROM 1.21B, do a search here on ZUG. Flashing a new ROM can be a bit scary at first but if you read the instructions and follow them carefully and apply the latest hotfix you will end up with a great system with a terminal already and it's all English. I'm not able to advise about the other questions, sorry.

I've also been suggested pdaXrom. But in both cases, I need to transfer to ROM to the Z and this isn't easy either. I think I can use my old Psion as a CF reader and move my old CF card to the Zaurus.

The terminal app is on the CDrom so you just need some way of getting it onto the CF card. Or else qkonsole will surely be easy to find on the web.
I just did this a couple of days ago with a new japanese 860, it has all been fairly straightforward so far (even for a linux newbie like me).

(assuming you don't want the japanese stuff, just do Part I!).

qkonsole doesn't work correctly on the 860: it is rotated.

Qkonsole works fine for me.
General tip: many apps can be rotated to fit the 860 screen, by touching and holding on the icon for a few seconds until the "details" screen appears. Untick the "display magnified screen" box and Robert is your mother's brother.
Doesn't work with all apps. Qkonsole is of of those for which it does. As is Abook, Zten, PDF2.

I think this is what you should do first.
- Just download the rom you choose, copy to yoour CF (using the psion ?)
- Flash (follow the instructions)
No need to install the terminal app first

The fast and saftest way to do a conversion is to read http://www.trisoft.de/pdf/c750qse.pdf (http://www.trisoft.de/pdf/c750qse.pdf) on how to do a localisation on Page 16. Then restore this backup file http://www.trisoft.de/download/C860-2004-01-19-12-48.zip (http://www.trisoft.de/download/C860-2004-01-19-12-48.zip). This way the ROM is still original.

Thanks for the tip concerning qkonsole.
Now, concerning the CF, it is automatically mounted and I can't unmount it:
#umount /dev/hda1
umount: /dev/hda1: Device or resource busy
Ditto with the -f option. And from the desktop, if I try to eject it, I get:
Failed to eject the card.
Please eject the card after you close all applications
and turn off the Zaurus.

I eventually managed to unmount and reformat the CF. I had bad FAT errors in dmesg; I think that some process periodically tried to access the card, which caused a remount in ro, but this time I was fast enough to unmount it first.
