Title: installing cacko but keeping japanese
Post by: Saurus on July 13, 2004, 01:32:51 pm
I want to install the cacko rom on my C860, but I want to keep my japanese OS. Will it still be japanese after installing the rom?
Or can I change the OS to english and still use all the japanese stuff(電子辞書、kanji-writing etc.)?

Thanks for helping out

The Cacko rom removes all the files needed for inputting and displaying Japanese, they also remove the dictionary files used by sljisho and the translator. So, no you won't be able to input Japanese after installing the Cacko rom.

If you want to have English menu's and keep all the Japanese reading/input ability of the C860 then I recommend converting the Zaurus yourself. It is actually an easy thing to do. I wrote a script that does almost all ofthe work for you - it has been posted here several times already so I won't post it again, a quick search should find it easily. You will need to have a terminal app installed and run the script as root. After that restart qtopia and the menus etc will be in English

Hmm, thanks for your reply.
Isn't there a rom that does not remove the japanese stuff?
I guess I have to look on japanese Zaurus sites. But the japanese people don't really like to mess with their computer stuff, so I don't think that I find something.

I found this site, but haven't read it all. For anyone who's interested:

You know, the script stubear mentions is really, really simple to run. Connecting with your computer shouldn't be too hard, to transfer the file and terminal application if you don't have it already.

I'm in the midst of making one, but having some problems with the initrd size. Been busy at work so haven't had the time or energy to finish it off.

Summer vacation is coming soon - hopefully I'll get a chance to finish it then. The script I mentioned before takes all of 30 seconds to run, and if you don't like the result you can easily return to the full Japanese by reinstalling a backup or reformating the user flash.

Here is the last post about the conversion script

Thank you so much.
And be sure to post the all-japanese rom, when it's ready.

edit:

Okay, now I am frustrated. You see, I never used Linux before and I wonder if there is a guide that explains everything. I mean EVERYTHING. I don't even now where the fricking command line is. And I installed something(fdisk) and I don't know how to open/use it(I guess via the command line).

You need to install a terminal application - there is one on the CD, or find qkonsole on the web (I installed it via a CF card rather than set up a conection to PC straight away).

Really, the conversion to english is very simple, although there are some remnants of japanese (especially the help files - which don't look very useful anyway - and the address book is a bit odd).

You will need to install the terminal app to get to a command line.

DANGER,DANGER, WILL ROBINSON: Do not use fdisk till you are sure you know what you are doing - if you are having trouble opening/installing a terminal app you really don't want to be playing around with fdisk.

Here are some linux guides that may help you get on your feet linuxwise

http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html.gz (http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html.gz) - Covers just about all you need to know to use and abuse linux

http://www.linuxvirgins.com/ (http://www.linuxvirgins.com/) - Only had a brief look at this site but the name says it all

http://linuxsurvival.com/ (http://linuxsurvival.com/) - another site that has been recommended on my LUG, never actually used it myself
