Title: English and German Versions
Post by: Zaurus_Eric on July 16, 2004, 03:53:06 pm
Hello,

I am interested in knowing if there are any significant differences between the english (SL5500) and german (SL5500G) Zaurus versions.

I imagine that the keyboard layout would be different, but was wondering if the actual OS is also different (e.g. different commands, different error messages, etc.).

Any information regarding this would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Eric

Hello,

there was no answer to this topic, would like to wake it up again. Background:
I burnt my SL-5500 by being stupid and connected it to wrong charger. Dead. Internal fuses blown, probably. Think best way out will be to buy a new (used) one, and sell the dead body as spare parts.

However, it seems it would be easier (here in Scandinavia) to get hold of a German SL-5500G. If I do that, and update it to the same Sharp 3.11 rom I had in my old 5500 without G, will I get into some kind of hardware trouble, i.e. is there something in the hardware of the 5500G that will prevent this?

I can imagine I will get a keyboard with wrong labels. But if I'm willing to live with that, does anybody know if it will work otherwise?

Thanks for info!
Jens

Hi all,

there's no technical difference between the SL-5500 and
the localized models (like the 5500G/5500E).

For the German version, the keys "Z" and "Y" are changed.
Also there's a sticker with the green keyboard functions for
the German umlauts.

But you can immediately flash an English Rom into a G
model (what a lot of users in Germany did, because
SHARP never released the Rom 3.1 localized).
