Title: Hello and Question about Standard software.
Post by: corster on July 19, 2004, 12:33:21 am
Hi all. I just ordered a zaurus 5500 today and I am really excited. I have put off getting a pda until I found one that I really really liked and could justify shelling out the cash for. I had wanted features like wireless internet connectivity and mp3 playablility and such but most of the crap windows ce or good palm devices that have such capabilities start at around $500 and go up from there. After doing some research I am very impressed with what I've read about the zaurus so far. I found a new sl5500 on ebay for around $200 and that more than justifies it with all of the features i've read about. I just need to buy the wifi compactflash card which there seems to be a lot of places that have zaurus compatible one's so I'm not too concerned about that.

Now for the question:

Is there a list of all of the standard software packages that are installed on the zaurus right out of the box? Not even the software that comes on the cd but just the apps that are preinstalled on a brand new unit.

Have a look a the listed software in the ROM update:
http://www.myzaurus.com/ROMupdate5.asp (http://www.myzaurus.com/ROMupdate5.asp)

The pre-installed apps will differ depending on whether the SL-5500 will come with the older 2.x ROM or the latest 3.13 ROM.

Good Link. I also downloaded the manuals and that had a pretty good list of all preinstalled software. Now for the next question:

What console software is installed not a terminal but everything that comes standard in /usr/bin?

The Zaurus uses Busybox for just about all of the console utilities. All the commands are explained in this:

There is a lot of other technical information here:
