Title: C700 Out of memory problem
Post by: Edwin Bradford on July 24, 2004, 04:53:19 pm
Can anyone help me? I've a total newbie, just started using my first Zaurus, which I bought to help me learn Japanese, and want to do the language conversion to English from http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html (http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html) as it seems the best for what I want.

I finally managed to get my Apple Mac to talk to the Zaurus after following the tutorials (and reinstalling OSX). I've also managed to reset the Zaurus to factory defaults a couple of times after experimenting with another language conversion which ended up getting really complicated. I now have this weird problem that some applications won't open (including the terminal) as I'm getting a Japanese "Low on memory" error. I've tried a factory reset which hasn't fixed it.

Is this a known error? The system info panel tells me there's 29864KB installed, 22264KB is used with 7600KB free, does that sound right? I've a 256MB SD card on the way but thats disk space not RAM, what's going on? I can't do anything with it until this is fixed.

Too many programs might have the "Fast Load" option checked.  This will eat up your system RAM.  Hold down the stylus on a program's icon to see if it is set to "Fast Load".

Alternatively, you can go into the Terminal program and type:

ps -x

to get a list of the processes that are running.

Thanks for the advice, very useful, especially the unix command which I didn't know. I found a link to the fast load issue on a web search last night so tried that which helped. Also my C700 finally locked up and wouldnt even respond to the power button so I had to resort to taking the battery out. That fixed everything and it seems OK now. If it starts going crazy again I'll use the ps -x command.

Incidentally I know the answers going to be no but is there any way to install more RAM in the C700 or improve it's performance otherwise? All I can find is the fix to use storage space as RAM on a CF card which I imagine is a bit slow?

You could use some of the storage-space on your CF-card to create a swap-file. This increases your available memory.
I replaced the Sharp ROM with the one Sash develloped, and it certainly made my C700 faster. This ROM also comes with an overclocking-utility, wich works fine, and most defenitly boosts the speed (use at your own risk).
