My question is about which Zaurus OS's I can use on my C700 and still have access to the best Japanese language software which, as far as I know, means Kanji Nirvana + Zten + CRIM (the inbuilt Sharp character recognition software).
I'd love a more customisable interface, the pdaXrom looks great but is it compatible with the Japanese software I've listed? I'm guessing that the Japanese character recognition CRIM software on the default Sharp ROM is not available with other Roms?
If I can't change Rom then second best is to customise the Sharp interface? There doesn't appear to be much available in terms of themes and interfaces under the standard Sharp Rom. I'd like to change my application icons on the applications tab, maybe have them appear as a list rather than as icons, change colours, button shapes etc. Any suggestions? Very grateful and thanks all for answers to previous queries.

The Japanese CRIM software and KanjiNirvana and the Inbuilt dictionary on the C860 will not work with the current version of pdaXrom as they all need qtopia.
The Cacko rom and tkc rom will work with kanjiNirvana. THe inbuilt dictionary and CRIM will also work but you will need to copy the files over from an existing C860 install as there is no ipk for them

Thanks Stubear, I'll look into them. By the way I've used your script to convert to English and it worked like a dream. I used the one from wbcd's web site and even as a newbie was able to figure out the unix commands to run it from my flash memory and not a CF card (I don't have one yet). Muchos gracias.

Glad to here that it also works on the 700 - I think you are the first to try it on that model.
If you are interested in new icons and backgrounds, you can change them yourself.
Copy the icon you want into the /home/QtPalmtop/pics144 folder (pngs work best) and then edit the .desktop file in /home/QtPalmtop/apps/<tab name> to point to the name of your new icon.
I've done this with my own rom (using Crystal Icons for KDE and now another Icon set I just found).

Great minds think alike Stubear. Having hung around the forum for a couple of days reading the posts I'm coming to the decision that for what I need, the Sharp Rom may be fine and I can swap some icons around. Its principally just the desktop tabs that offend me with their oversize icons, I wish it was possible to display each tab in list format instead. Anyhow, good advice, thanks.

You can make them smaller with FN+1 (on a C760 with Sharp ROM), I guess half the size. Affects all tabs at once (except the file-tab, can't resize that). Don't know if that's what you want though.

I kiss you. What a great tip, that's a lot better, or at least I have the choice. Is there a list of these user options somewhere because the Help is in Japanese of course and it would take me forever to translate it.
Also I've just transferred my first icon, used a utility on OSX to extract it (from MacOSX) then resized it and followed Stubear's instructions to upload it to the Zaurus. I think I can speed up the process a bit now but I'll carry on and if someone can tell me how to take screen shots I'll post one...
Now I'm really getting excited.

Hey, even I can do screenshots... discovered it by accident when trying to find a Control key...;-)
shif-fn-C will put an image file in an obvious directory (for me it ends up on a CF card if present, SD otherwise, haven't looked into changing this).

Thanks, I don't have a CF card just yet but the keyboard command saved images to my internal flash fine. Here's a screen shot of the applicaitons tab with large icons http://www.behindyou.info/test/zaurus/OSXlargeIcons.jpg (http://www.behindyou.info/test/zaurus/OSXlargeIcons.jpg) and with small icons http://www.behindyou.info/test/zaurus/OSXsmallIcons.jpg (http://www.behindyou.info/test/zaurus/OSXsmallIcons.jpg)
I'm quite pleased with that. Does anyone know how to change the colour of the tab titles where it says "Applications"? It's white at present and needs to be the same colour grey as the main background.
