Title: FOMA
Post by: zepheir on July 28, 2004, 04:46:38 am
This question is directed to others in Japan.

I believe I saw a FOMA IPK package on the ezaurus website a few days ago. Also, I've been seeing this advertised with mobile phones lately. Anyone one know exactly what it is?

FOMA is NTT DoCoMo's W-CDMA/3G offering, haven't seen the IPK that you talk about but they do provide some data cards for this service so it may be a driver.

It's short for Freedom of Mobile multimedia Access

From the NTT docomo website (http://foma.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/whats/foma/list/index.html)

Quote
FOMA (Freedom Of Mobile multimedia Access) is the revolutionary NTT DoCoMo service based on W-CDMA technology, which complies with IMT-2000 — an international standard for third-generation (3G) mobile communications. Offering videophone and high-speed data communications, FOMA continues to evolve to meet a variety of needs, evidenced by an enhanced lineup of handsets, an expanded service area and new services. Furthermore, DoCoMo is working to develop applications that utilize FOMA's distinct feature — a high-speed high-capacity network — with the aim of realizing richer mobile multimedia communications. Connecting with anyone, anytime, anywhere, and freely accessing all kinds of information. That's why FOMA is expanding the limitless potential of mobile communications.

Seems to be the latest g3 cellphones with movie, apps, email etc

Yep, this is the FOMA P2402 CF card driver for SL-C860 1.40JP ROMs

It may be of interest I suppose if you have a 3G data subscription.
