Title: Motorola announces third Linux/Java phone
Post by: dhns on July 28, 2004, 08:00:14 am
Here a new Linux smartphone.

Just wondering if it is this time an "open" Linux with access to the file system, terminal, ssh, developer tools etc.

This is nice. Now when and where can I buy one of these?

Yes, when and where?!?! Has anyone seen Motorola's first two Linux based phones in Europe for that matter?

The A780 sounds excellent, far better than my Nokia 6600, except for the 'TransFlash Memory Card'. Never heard of TransFlash. At least the Nokia 6600 takes MMC cards. I like that design of having the basic phone on the outside of the device, which then flips open for the PDA screen. Shame there is no PDA keyboard though.

Here's another article -- global rollout (including US this time) is Q4:

What I'd like is a linux phone with the 860 screen, 3 megalpixel camera, form factor and keyboard (not to mention archos HD and pvr capability).  Until someone comes up with holographic phones, that would be a mature product.

What the phone makers don't realize is that as wireless broadband increases people are going to want high resolution screens for web surfing, photos, gps and remote access.  Blazer, the browser on my samsung palm phone is like root canal relative to opera on my 5600 home wifi

I just got a Motorola A780.

My first impression:
It is the most complete toy I ever got.
2 Chargers, 2 Lithium batteries, 2 pens ,a bluetooth headset
and a 128 MB MicroSD Card + SD Adapter is included.

And all the documentation is in japaneese ...

No translation? Strange...

BTW: I have seen some US suppliers on Google and eBay from 759 $ up to 999 $...

Yes, I can try...

But I am not shure what to do exactly.

Any suggestion how to get the possible IP address of  the phone?

All docu I have is in Japaneese and I do not have any sync software.

I am currently trying to get some more information on the internet.

I will keep you posted about the device!

I've seen some E680's online (mainly ebay). Looks like a neat phone as well. It's Sony-Ericsson Px00-like, brick-shaped and the screen(320x240) takes up most of the front, no "hardware" number keys. Runs Linux as well, QTopia based. I might be getting one when my current contract ends, though it might be overkill next to my C860.
It's fairly powerful, has a 300MHz XScale and all, and SD-expansion.
I am too very curious about the hackability factor of these phones... a mere shell would be awesome.

Port scanner? Most probably it is in the 192.x.x.x range.
