Title: screen fonts on the 6000L
Post by: Dorian on July 30, 2004, 02:04:12 pm
I just got my Zaurus SL-6000L yesterday. The only thing that I don't like is the fonts in applications like Terminal and Opera web browser.

Is there any way to change to a larger font? Can I set it globally for all apps?

Terminal has a 12point font that is too small and Opera has a little button to enlarge the font but it's not large enough.

Also I can't seem to get the "Zoom" feature to work. Is this usable in Opera?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Search  the zug software index for "vera-sans".

In Opera hold the stylus on the scale button (+-) and a slider will pop up which allows you to scale the page from 20% to 200%.

I'd like to second glacier's appreciation. These old eyes are happier with that scaling tool!

Thanks,

Also try top ipk here:

It installs larger fonts that work with sl-6000 in vga landscape mode. The site suggests installing to sd card, so I did. Very nice. Now I can see the print in qkonsole.

the suggestions others provided may already solve your problem. but just fyi and for the benefit of the broad community. on 6k, the sys font usage is

( A ) Font meaning
meaning of the numberical value in the second place of the font name
normal helvetica_xxx_50
italic helvetica_xxx_50i
bold helvetica_xxx_75
bold+italic helvetica_xxx_75i

( B ) Sys Font
basically system only uses two fonts
1.helvetica_180_50_t10: for menus, tabs, settings, etc. This is the font you've seen most of the time.
2.helvetica_180_75_t10: for the fonts on the desktop and application subject (e.g. the site name or page name appears at the top of Opera)
note: Settings->Appearance->Font->use thick fonts is not selecting bold fonts. I guess it's using graphical methods to doulbe font appearance.

( C ) PIM
Fonts selection for the stock applications are built into the binary files in /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/*.so. The corresponding normal Font size in the PIM are:
minimum 120
small 140
medium 180 (default)
large 240
maximum 360

the default font size used to edit an entry in PIM is normal 240

you can find the sys fonts in /opt/QtPalmtop/lib/fonts. and now you can rename/relink them to fit your taste.

a more detailed discussion is in the china zug section where i try to display chinese font on 6k https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9592 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9592)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I know I am going blind, as I get older, but I was going blind faster trying to read the small print in Qkonsole. Now I can read it _without_ my glasses!

Thanks!

But they only work in Landscape mode? Bummer if true.

Thanks,

Fortunately, fonts tend to work independly of screen orientation or screen size. These work just as well in Portrait as in Landscape mode.

I have noticed some problems with screen redraw using fonts larger than 14 point, but the 14 point font works very well for me using black font on a white background. It would be nicer if the fonts were bold.
