Hey.. Just wanted to let everybody know that the RC1 of pdaXrom 1.1.0 Kathrin has been released to developers and we are now awaiting the first test results - when the public release is due is unsure but we are quickly getting there.
And no i won't send it to anybody, it's still not "end-user" friendly - so please don't ask for it.
Always visit http://www.pdaXrom.org (http://www.pdaXrom.org) for latest news.

:rushes off to try it out:
I'll check back as soon as I have anything more useful to add
-
Laze is hitting "get mail" 5 times pr. minute to check for bug reports.. :-)
Btw. nice try from ip 195.138.42.107 / dslnet.195-138-42.ip107.dokom.de :

Well, installed like a peach once I worked out how to format internal flash
Everything works so far. Fiddling around in the options and prefs and it all looks fantastic.
network card works fine. networking works fine.
Do we still have no bluetooth support in kernel? That'd be nice to have, I have a Socket card I'd like to get working.
Just testing that the time doesn't lapse now by setting it then suspending for a while..
-
Caesium - when it comes out of suspend sometimes it looks like clock is broken. Its not its just not updated - so just wait a minute and then its updated :-)
Furthermore the power and clock applet now contain "links" to launch power and time settings.
Also notice that most of the python utils are throw together by me so they are ugly and bad programmed - when we get the time we will make new utils in C - the python+pygtk is nice but is just to slow compared to C compiled apps.
-
Laze,
Yes, I noticed the clock in the taskbar takes a while to update. I checked in a term with date and it was correct, so I wasn't worried.
I'm going to give xfce4 a whirl shortly, since that was my preferred environment in 1.0.5 - although this matchbox install is actually quite nice
I'm actually trying to find something that's broken, and not having much success
Certainly all the apps that are bundled seem fine, good job
-
i guess us mere zaurus "end-users" are not priveliged enough to get to try it until you feel we are ready to handle it.... feels more like microsoft again than linux (but with no mirrored bittorrents)....
its not like anyone coded those ipk's on the unstable feed - just compiling doesn't really make one into a developer, ive been coding for around 15 years just havent had time to compile anything for pdaxrom... but i guess i don't qualify as a developer so no RC for me :-(
(No offence intended laze, sash, etc - your work is appreciated...)
-
Yesyesyesyesyes.
Thank you for your work, pdaXrom staff and thank you Laze, that you keep us informed (and for the work too).
So, let's go flashing.
Zumi, the happy
-
anonuk - he, he.. Your right, but the "ipk recompilers" also help the pdaXrom by making programs available to the pdaXrom platform and also at least people being able to compile anything are also better at reporting bugs or identifying bugs. :-)
btw. im a bit drunk - been out celebrating the release so this maybe not make alot of sense right now - will look into it tommorow.
-
I think the only-for-developers-release doesn't make much sense, but somehow this is the official standpoint, not only a drunk one.
Yes, you will have more false alarm if you release the ROM public, but hell, this is a free project! Most of the people here choose Zaurus because they love the Linux/GNU/free software attitude. Most of them love using bleeding edge stuff and experimenting with the lastest things.
This type is not always the "I-crosscompile-what-I-need" person, he only use stuff well. You can drive a car very well, even if you can't make/repair one. (However you can be a better driver if you do know more about the buildup of cars!)
So, I think you can release developement versions with a scary warning that you can trash your Zaurus with it. (I don't get it exactly how, because you can't really hurt the internal flashing program, OK, maybe with a wrong C program)
Free Kathrin!

Zumi:
That's _exactly_ what I think.
It's time for a anonymous CVS
jabbath
-
um... why not apply for a login at pdaxrom -- I think the requirements were just to ask --
I'm not sure if it has changed.
-
Now, the flashing of this rc is failing for me... I'm sure it's due to my partitioning.
I thoguht that the flash menu would allow me to select a size to repartition --
but it didn't.
:-/
So, how do I repartition?
Scott
-
I am about to make a trip and I would LOVE to have Kathrin installed to play / get acquainted with. I cannot understand why it is not posted in a public place for anyone to grab it...
It suffices with saying "Please don't even BOTHER with asking for instructions / howto's as this is a RC and we are not wasting even a second of our time in answering questions outside the developer circle"... if that is the problem.
I mean this is supposed to be fun for all zaurus community, I assume. I want to start start my fun just now, with RC1
So please leave it somewhere for all of us to grab it and have some anticipated fun... we promise that we wont bother you, core developer team, with lame questions ....
BUT ... but ... we can anyway post some bugs in the bugtracking page ... We can even work on making this release even stronger !
hope we all see the light and get hands on your work in anticipation ... then we ALL go and get drunk in honor of you people ... I would certainly drink one on your name.
Cheers
Enrique

ok, I used the 1.0.5 updater/tools repartition to 52mb... and now k* installs.
I'm not sure what the concern is over a pre-release? maybe the pre-releases
should be put out there... personally, 1.0.5 is still solid... if I were going on a
trip -- I'd want something that was usable.
Scott
-
Okay, I want RC 1 to play with, test, etc. ... not to use for anything serious ... I will install later the full release of 1.1.0 for that
-
dunno...
I just flashed it twice.
I see 0 apps... no openbox, anything.
all I see is a stardard x11 login. with a few xterms and an xclock.
Is there something that I'm missing? :-/
Scott
ps: there isn't even a readme... nothing... with this. not sure what there is to
test or play with.
-
I agree with the "open" points - and the next release will be available to the public - but due to the "nature" of the current release we just wanted to make sure with didn't destroy anything and also kept the "bugreporting" to a minimum :-)
Hell, we might even release the RC1 to everybody soon due to the low amount of bug reports.
Scott - is will soon post a how-to guide on installing it "properly".. Zumi seem to have the same problem and Foxdie was kind enough to make a guide for you all - but i seem to have misplaced the URL - but i will find it as soon i get home and get rid of these damm hangovers..
Btw. if we release the RC1 one to the public we will probally also be using a BitTorrent will anyone be using this - that way we could kill some of the bandwidth problems we are having when releasing new stuff :-) And yes lots of people offers file mirrors but our main problem is that people just click the first http download they see. So the next release is going to be with http link rotation and BitTorrent if no one disagree.
-
hey.... have a sec to hop into irc?
ya, spy.org is always available, if you want to dist pre or large stuff there.
Ok, I can see the apps.... but can't figure out how to get openbox to run as
more than just a wm.
Did foxdie post his instructions url here?
Scott
ps: this is a 700 ... had cacko 1.21 on it 32/32... couldn't flash 1.1.0, so
I used 1.0.5 to repartition 50mb root... then flashed 1.1.0 fine... but
something is still missing. /home/root wasn't there, etc.
-
Maybe you forgot to reformat the user partition or you can delete the /home/root dir and copy the content of the /home/root/ dir from the tar.gz file found in the /root/ (.home_default.tar.gz)
I did this, however lockup stay.
Mainly you should:
1. Use the 1.0.5 ROM to repartition you root partition to 50MB.
2. Flash as normally to 1.1.0 RC1
3. Get into the flashing menu again and choose 3. which is supposedly have the text "Erase all / Format (all data will be lost!)" in Japanese and then hit Y.
4. The system boots, finish.
However it doesn't work for me (this way), because I'm experiencing frequent lockups. The instructions from Foxdie was roughly the same (I left out redundant steps and long instructions (hey, dev. version! ).
I have a feeling the problem connected to the C700 hardware (it has much smaller disk inside (about 64Mb), so maybe this causes the lockups). Please always write the type of your Zaurus when posting. (I have a C700 too)
-
BitTorrent will anyone be using this
I can do without any troubles.

-
Laze, have you got my reports? Got no replies and besides I'm not sure if my mail is working
-
ikm - don't think so..
-
Laze, have you tested it on C700 too, before the release, or I am the first one trying to flash it on a C700?
I hardly can test it if it locks up when I try to start anything...

bittorrent is an OK in here...

I did format ... etc... I figured out that I had to get to the menu that would allow me to
repartition -- so I used 1.0.5 and made 50mb root... etc. I then formatted / erased
home, etc. installed (flashed) ... but no /home/root ... I just found the url to the
foxdir instructions -- yes, I then did the untar for /home/root ... but now when
I launch X on the 700, it locks up... pretty much right away. I was able to
click on the power menu item and close the window once.... ever since then
everything just locks up when I click on it. I haven't seen a single app run.
sometimes, the wm doesn't even start up ... the icons on the menubar are blank
and the cursor doesn't move. :-<

Mainly the same here, except that I can run sometimes some app before the lockup.
I post here my bugreport, you can check that your error is the same as here.
Greetings!
First, things that are good to know:
ROM: pdaXrom 1.1.0 - RC1
Zaurus: SL-C700
I'm experiencing some serious (I think) matchbox caused lockups.
I reflashed, reformated as described here:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...me=Custom7x0ROM (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Custom7x0ROM)
X starts up, but sometimes it locks up before all of the matchbox-panel
icon are loaded. This happens not too often. But in most cases if I try
to start anything, my C700 locks up. There _are_ some cases when the
thing I started starts correctly, I managed to run this way aterm, xkbd,
fltdj. Sometimes it outlines the window and locks up after that. If I
edit .xinitrc and comment out the last 3 line which contains the
matchbox-desktop, matchbox-panel and openbox and add some custom stuff
(for example "xmms", or "python /usr/bin/datentime.py", they start and
run correctly, I didn't experienced lockups this way.
Lock up means for me: Zaurus not responding to anything, not even to
CTRL-ALT-Backspace, I have to get the battery out and restart to get it
work again.
The matchbox specific errors I get when I call startx (with the default
.xinitrc):
mbmenu: no _MB_THEME set on root window
mbdesktop: failed to open /usr/local/share/applications
mbdesktop: failed to open /home/root/.applications
mb-applet-menu-launcher: failed to open /usr/local/share/applications
mb-applet-menu-launcher: failed to open /home/root/.applications
Removing all applets from the panel except the menu (app. lanucher)
doesn't solve the problem. Leaving the the SD card in/pull it out doesn't
make difference either.
Zumi
I have a feeling that this is a C700 specific bug.
Zumi
-
yes, 100% the same for me.
if you
cd /home/root
mv .xinitrc .xx
and then startx, you can run on the system...
so, something in matchbox is causing the lockup....
I can not run *any* apps.. they all cause the lockup.
I'll try some things... but for now, I'll mostly have to wait for a fix
and rc2.
Scott
ps: 700
-
Just wanted to pop in 2p and say these lockups doesn't occur on my 860, to strengthen the 700-only case.
-
ikm - don't think so..
Ok, I'll just post them here.
In general, everything looks superb. Outstanding work. The things I mentioned so far are:
1) The /mnt/card directory contains Documents/Install_Files when not mounted. It should really be just empty
> Fixed bugs in XServer - now it must support 320x240/240x320 modes.
2) How can I try that? Then I try running sdl app 320x240 fullscreen, it still is in the center of the black 640x480 screen (when run from console, it works fullscreen). And xrandr shows only one resolution.
3) Unfortunately, the SD does not appear to work at all. There is a card inserted, the sharp_mmcsd_m module is loaded, the '[SD]-clustsize = 4000' message appeared in dmesg -- so everything seems ok in the kernel space, but there is just no /dev/mmcd/ directory, which is referenced in /etc/fstab. Seems to be a devfs-related problem.
4) When logging in remotely over the ssh, it loads power settings. It should do so when the login session is started on the local console only.
5) Having openssh by default with no root password opens a huge security breach, as any uneducated user of pdaxrom with a network connectivity has an open backdoor, and is totally unaware of it!
The openssh should not be installed by default. Those who need it should install it themselves, so they know they did it.
> Fixed problem with Xrandr and AtiCore - bad drawing in portrait mode.
6) The screen is still corrupted a bit on the bottom when I suspend/resume in portrait mode.
p.s. Tested on C760.
-
4) When logging in remotely over the ssh, it loads power settings. It should do so when the login session is started on the local console only.
A quick reply -- just thought about it a little -- it should actually load power settings during the init, before you log in, somewhere in /etc/rc.d/*.
-
OK, so it really seems to be a C700 specific problem. I don't think it's tightly connected to matchbox. This instability can be caused by a wrong C700 kernel or some misbehavior because of the partition sizes.
I ask the dev team: have you got it working on a C700 or we are alone with our problem? The bug can be narrowed because the hardware doesn't differs much from the other C models. I hope you have some solution or idea for us, poor C700 users.
Zumi

sorry for all testers who uses 700/750 models, RC1 have 760/860 kernel only.
I forgot check that because have GPRS connection for now only which not very nice for realtime work. Today I'll compile new kernels for 700 and 750.
-
Thanks! Good to know that it will be all right and I can begin to use it.
