Title: FVWM compiled!
Post by: bastichelaar on August 15, 2004, 07:13:19 pm
Recently I uploaded some libraries. They were all libraries for FVWM. Now I have FVWM compiled with all the newest patches. It works like a charm! FVWM is highly configurable, and it's fast (the fastest WM I've ever used, I use it on my Zaurus and my desktop).

I wasn't able to upload the IPK in the feed of pdaXrom, so I uploaded the files on my own website. The address: http://zaurus.xerys.nl (http://zaurus.xerys.nl).

Have fun!

This wm looks great! I would really like to test it, so i will!!!!!

Question : what are the dependences ? Only libstroke and imlib are available at pdaxrom.org but more are present on your web site, are all of your ipks related to fvwm ?

They are all related. I changed the website, and placed a comment!

You're right, FVWM is big. I hope there will be a version of pdaXrom without matchbox...

EDIT: After recompiling, stripping and gzipping the file is only 2.28 MB! Download again  And I uploaded the IPK in the pdaXrom feed.

dear, bastichelaar... that wasn't a funny joke
df gave me 64% of my single 58Mo partion free (+/- = 19Mo free) before installing but the installation failed as i reached 0 free mo !!!!!!!!!!
plus i dunno how to launch this wm : "fvwm -replace " makes my x server crash...

Never mind, let's do it once more : i love that!!!!!!

Nice to hear...  I will post my configuration files as soon as my apple look-a-like desktop is finished  Hint: change /home/root/xinitrc, comment out the last matchbox lines and insert a line for fvwm.

There's a nice long topic about Fvwm in the Gentoo forums (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=80517). Full with tips, hints, config files.

This is a very nice WM if you have enough patience to learn the configuration. You can make it to the WM of your dreams, but you have to work for you pleasure. I learned it for 3 or 4 days to make a config file that suits me (well, mostly, I ran out of patience. )

Now, the time has come to make the best Zaurus WM.
Zumi

Ps.: I tried to crosscompile it too, but I wasn't able to handle the lib depends and the configure file was a mess for me too. I'm happy you did it well! =)

Thanks bastichelaar for your website and efforts on fvwm !!!

I am quite a newbie, I installed pdaxrom 1.0.5 (Although I was waiting for 1.1.0, even the RC1) just to test it !

I installed it ok, as also installed all the required libraries  and optional modules.

I replaced matchbox loading with fvwm ...

Just to find a fvwm completely unconfigured  (these surprises come when you've been in MS world for the last 12 years or so)

I noticed, in the default vfwm menu, two scripts (the 95 script and the config form) that I assume it creates a default configuration for me.

I tried them, reset / boot my zaurus, and I find some ERRORS on fvwm loading saying that it cant find PERL...

Now: PERL is a needed thing for fvwm modules / configurations to work ?

I am like 30% of memory free in my C860, and the only thing I installed is fvwm !   Thanks good that I bought a 512MB SD (Which is coming...)

Regards, and thank you for sharing fvwm compilation with everyone, bastichelaar !

Perl is needed indeed... Which version did you download? Because there is one version I've stripped too much  I zipped the Config files in /share/fvwm/Config. They need to be extracted in /share/fvwm. I've just uploaded the new IPK in the pdaXrom feed.

BTW I'm trying to cross-compile xine now, keep your fingers crossed

hello men !

A few days i sent a mail to Bastich for his fvwm config files. after i received them, i went at home and i copy all files in my /home/root (.fvwm dir, his .xinitrc in my pdaxrom 1.1.0rc2). But when i restarted X with startx, fvwm don't work. I only had the dock on the left, three black boxs on the right and a grey desk with no clickable zone.

However, just before installed fvwm i installed all libraries who are in ure website and perl lib who'r in pdaxrom1.1.0 but nothing. Finally desesperate i copy files who are in /share/fvwm/Config in my new .fvwm dir in /home/root.... but nothing.

And the probleme is the same with pdaxrom 1.0.5.

Have u an idea of the problem.

Can someone help me please.... :-)

You need to unpack the files in the /share/fvwm/Config to the /share/fvwm/ directory. Then you need to install a program to set your background. After that, I hope fvwm will work...

You don't need to modify them. For the background I use Esetroot (included with eterm).

I may be a bit dumb ... but I cannot find the config files ... in /share there is no folder called fvwm ... where it supposedly is a /config with the zipped files... please batischelaar upload those config files into here or in your website

Btw ... how are going those other crosscompilations of yours  I am going to give crosscompiling a try, but given that yet I got to learn loads of things, that will happen in some weeks in the future

There's the program called fvwm-root, I use this on desktop to set the bg image. I haven't tried on my Z. Hope it will work.
This is how I use it in my .fvwm2rc:
Code: [Select]
AddToFunc StartFunction
+ I Test (Init) Exec exec fvwm-root -r /home/zumi/.fvwm/images/grassy.png

Where (download or in the fvwm ipk) are the config files to make fvwm look like the screenshots above?

bastichelaar:
I was looking at your menu from your config. Do you really have America's Army that runs on your Z. If so, where did you find it and can you share?

So far I'm very impressed with fvwm, but it's going to take a while to get it like I want. Thanks for compiling it.

BTW, I see you use kopi, any chance you'd be willing to compile the latest version that includes kapi?

Thanks for a great compile.

cheers,
Jerry

... the AA entry could be from the template he used to create the config file :-)

I tried the config file and fvwm is great. I only needed to install eterm (mentioned in this forum), set the path to eterm and correct the wallpaper path in the config file.

Great program, thank's a lot for compiling it!

Regards,

Fabian

As I said, you don't need to install Eterm if you don't use it. fvwm-root does the job. Works for me.

Great news that you're compiling Kapi!

Excuse my stupid question about America's Army, I missed the "#" on that line.  Maybe you can compile Doom 3 next

Looking forward to Kapi

Well, this window manager has a steep learning curve, start with http://www.fvwm.org/ (http://www.fvwm.org/)
for documentation and also, more helpful in my mind; download bastichelaar's config files, extract them and examine the .fvwmrc2 file for how he has his configured. I started by tweaking that file and am still playing.

Good luck & have fun,
Jerry

Update: zautrix just uploaded a new version of KDEPIM, so maybe it's just as well you didn't get this done just yet

Hi,

My config:
- Zaurus 760
- Pdaxrom kathrin RC2

I use fvwm as window manager but I have a weird problem with Kopi. I can not type any character with the keyboard. Everything is ok if I use the pointer, but nothing with the keyboard.

I tried using Matchbox and Xfce4 and kopi works fine with the keyboard.

Maybe someone can explain this problem ?

Edit:
It works if I comment the "Style kopi..." line in .fvwm2rc.
I will check possibles values of "Style" to find what's wrong.

I am installing Perl on my Zaurus, but I also note that to run fvwm I need libexpat.so.1?  I have looked around for that library on http://killefiz.de/zaurus (http://killefiz.de/zaurus) and elsewhere but don't know where to find it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Actually, would someone mind explaining what steps are necessary to install the window maneger beyond perl and the packages on bastichelaar's site?  I've followed the posts, and beyond that just to get there window manager working there should be nothing else necessary.

I have edited the .xinitrc file, commented out the two lines pertaining to matchbox, and put in one line that is just "fvwm".  But no dice.

In the default RC-3 install the .xinitrc is a symlink that points to mbsession (/usr/bin I think - Z not with me so can't be sure) so you can either delete the symlink in your home directory and copy over bastichelaar's .xinitrc which is already had all lines commented out, or go to you mbsession file and comment out the lines, but there are way more than 2 that need to be commented out. Compare bastichelaar's .xinitrc & the virigin mbsession to see all lines that need to be commented out.

I recommend not editing the mbsession file, I simply rename .xinitrc to .xinitrcfvwm and recreate the symlink to mb session when I want to go back to the matchbox windo manager.

Hope that helps,

Jerry

Thanks for your comments.  I was able to do everything once I installed perl and did an additional thing, which I will describe here fot the benefit of people with the same problem.

Install all the libraries needed and the fvwm ipk from batischalaar's site.  Also install perl.  The ipk's from the Zaurus Software Index seem not to work-- one link is dead and the ipk for the other fails to install.  Rather install (if you do not have perl) from this site, which works: http://www.zaurusoft.com/packages/view/396 (http://www.zaurusoft.com/packages/view/396)

Finally, after that point, you may get the error that libexpat.so.1 is missing.  Go to your root / and from there do a find and grep for libexpat.  It shows up in some directory (I think /usr/lib).  Go there and in this directory link ln -s libexpat.so libexpat.so.1 (so that libexpat.so.1 is just linked to libexpat.so there).

Hope this helps.  I don't know why I had these issues and no one else seemed to have them.  I am not a linux expert, and totally new to pdaxrom, though.  But liking the new interface a lot!

Sounds like your problem was Perl, you might have had better luck if you had used the perl from pdaXrom.org/feed2.

Glad you got it working.

Jerry, thanks.  what is supposed to be the difference between feed2 and the normal ipk feed archive (which is nicely formatted, has descriptions, etc.)?

i have a few more questions ...
1) how can i get the useful tray applications like the battery and memory monitors, disk eject tools, etc displayed (and running) in fvwm as they were in matchbox?  are those little things particular to matchbox?
2) in X is there a general settings file perhaps where the size of the minimize and maximize window boxes in te upper right of an application can be adjusted?  would be nice to have larger ones, since the zaurus screen is small.
3) in any of the applications (matchbox or fvwm) are there ways of accessing menu items (file, edit, etc.) without using the touchscreen? (perhaps justing using a Fn key combination?)
4) what is the equivalent of the Ctrl key in pdaxrom?  i am trying to press Ctrl-X to send mail from pine, but it won't work.

thanks for any help on these...
