Title: English conversion of the C860
Post by: Guest_Merardon on August 18, 2004, 10:14:37 pm
I'm preparing to buy a Zaurus C860 from www.pricejapan.com, and from the looks of it, they won't convert it for me, but I could be wrong. I'm not willing to pay an extra couple hundred dollars just to convert it, so I was wondering how to do it myself. I have no experience in linux so far (you try downloading cds on a 28K modem), so I just have Windows 98se. I only found a few guides, but you either had to have Linux, or you had to have an SD card reader. I have neither. Is it still possible? A complete conversion, including removing all of the old Japanese applications. Many thanks in advance.

I went through the forums and I read a similar question, but they were merely directed to a different OS. I'd like to do that later, but for now, I just want to stick with the default OS. As before, many thanks in advance.

As for not having SD or CF,....unless you plan to do NOTHING with the Zaurus, you will need one of these or have to sync (file transfer)....

Right now, you can get a KINGSTON 512MB SD card for $49 (after rebate) at outpost.com until tommorrow

Many  64MB cards are FREEE after rebate.....check ecost.com Bargains,

Anyway, here is the wiki I found:

http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...us%20conversion (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=C-7x0%20Sharp%20Zaurus%20conversion)

As for not knowing LINUX...just FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS...IT IS ALL LAYED OUT.

LINUX will come easier, but you have a linux machine in your hand, pln on learning it or going to Borders and buy a 10 year old book for $3.00 and you'll still learn alot.

Good Luck..

I saw that earlier, but there's a bad link. The downloads.conics.net link won't work for me, in Step 1.

The wbcd.org page gives a simple english conversion (it also tells you how to put on some useful stuff for japanese learners, which you may not need).

http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html (http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html)

You do need some sort of CF/SD card reader on your pc to load a couple of files with, but it is really very easy

The easist and best way to convert fully to English is to load the Cacko rom.

If you are new to linux then the other conversion methods (my script included) will probably lead to confusion and leave the Japanese stuff still on your zaurus taking uop space you can use for other programs
