I currently use and like an SL5600. But prior to getting the 5600 I had a 5500.
It's been sitting in a drawer for over a year now, so I decided to pull it out and try flashing a new ROM to it.
I've tried two different ROMs so far, both with the same results:
I get the right sequence of lights during the flash process, but when I go to start up post-flash, I get nothing - no screen, other than the orange battery/charge light.
So this last time I'm trying the Cacko ROM and now it's been sitting there for some 4 hours with both lights on, indicating it's flashing the ROM. Normally it only takes about 5 minues.
Did I kill the 5500, or do you think there's still some hope of reviving it?
Or could it be that the screen is dead?
Thanks.

Have you tried booting into diagnostic mode?
D+P when hitting the reset switch should start the diags.
If you dont get that I'd guess that perhaps your screen is broken.

Update:
Well, I ended up able to boot the 2.37 ROM after reflashing. Very strange though. It took a good 4 reflash tries before the thing took. On two of the tries it booted in text mode - during the flash, not after - and complained of /dev/mtdblock being corrupt.
Well, at least I know the thing works.
So, I really want to try some of the new ROMs out there. Any pointers on how to avoid what I've gone through today?
Thanks.

And just another update :-)
I've been going through the forums and found a dead battery thread which may or may not be an issue with the 5500.
After reading up a bit, I now wonder if the battery just won't charge. Since I reflashed, I've had to restart it a few times, and on a couple of occasions it simply rebooted itself when I unplugged the power supply while the unit was on. Once I had to even go through a full reset to get it to power back on.
In any case, I'll leave it charging over night and see how things are tomorrow.
Interesting that I've only read of power problems on the 5500 though. Possibly a quality control issue with the earlier units (I purchased mine very early on)?

Well, I let it chanrge pretty much all weekend. Won't hold a chanrge. Everything works fine while plugged in, but the second I pull the plug, it shuts off.
It looks to be charging while plugged in ("Power Online, Charging") but beyond that, I don't know what else to do. From the little bit of reading I've done here, I don't know that a new battery would help, but I suppose I could order and find out.

I'm having the same problem... can get into diag menu, but every time i try to reflash with the sharp rom i get several messages telling me that /dev/mtdblock is corrupted..
i wonder if rickh was lucky cuz i have tried to reflash it more than 8 times and it always fails...
