Title: OZ and 5500 vs 5600 ??
Post by: dansawyer on August 28, 2004, 02:43:56 pm
All,

I am in need of a replacement Z. My 5500 burnt out the light and is useless as a PDA. It works perfectly as a needed test system connected to a computer.

That said how different is flashing a 5600 from a 5500? Can the same kernel builds be used? Are there kernel builds for 2.4.18 for the 5600?

I assume the OZ and Opie ipkg and ROMs are the same; is that true?

Thanks,
Dan

The kernels are different (different hardware) as are the initrd.bin's (different modules amongst other things). The flashing process is different so I hear (more akin to that used on the C machines).

There are kernels and initrd.bin's available on the OZ web site. I think the 5600 is called a poodle (correct me if I'm wrong):

http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/poodle/ (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/poodle/)
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/experim...dle/3.3.6-pre1/ (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/experimental/poodle/3.3.6-pre1/)

I presume you've read the reports about OZ on the 5600, I think it's less stable than on the 5500, but people have certainly got usable systems iirc.

You may be better grabbing OE and building 3.5.1 as I assume that will be even better (actually Mickeyl said a release would be out in Sept.)
