ZGCC is running on my 5500 and I'm pretty happy. I guess all I need to do now is find a good editor and get rid of all these damn lame applications. How do I get rid of all the * CRAP * that comes on the default sharp rom? All the games, the pim, the hancom crap, the media viewers... There are 24 applications total that I KNOW I will never, ever use.
I'm hoping its simple. I suspect however it has something to do with building your own rom. Sounds like a project to brick my zaurus to me. Any information would be appreciated, thanks!

We are going to have to stop meeting like this!
go to the download section of this site, and go to the ROM's section.
There are quite a few non-Sharp roms that exclude many of the items you wish to delete. (Some add other linux tools also.)
BTW, what is ZGCC?

zgcc is the developer suite with gcc g++ etc on it. Its the reason I bought a zaurus pretty much, wince didnt really have that option, palm only has C.... well
a new rom? That can't be the only way, I don't want to brick my zaurus ((

That is unlikely as long as you flash with a zImage & initrd.bin combo (rather than the Sharp ospack method) and make sure the power supply is good.
Try OZ - it has a writable root, you can add or remove to your heart's delight.
It may be possible to re-mount the 5500 Sharp root as rw, but I'm not sure (I think it's been done with the 5600), so you can manaually delete what you don't want. Otherwise you can delete the .desktop files under ~/applications/ (or is it ~/apps/ ??) so that the icons don't show up.

The default applications are only taking up ROM space which is read only on the 5500. You cannot make it writable with the Sharp ROM. It's not like they're eating into internal memory, which is completely separate on the 5500.
Only the 5600 and later models with the Sharp ROM can have the ROM made writable.
To delete the icons of unwanted apps, the easiest way is to use the Tab Settings application.
