Interesting...
but I dont really think you should be posting user/pass for that.
-
It\'s not a regular password. The download is free to everyone, you just have to register first. outlaw has just done that step for us.
-
It looks like this is a trial only, but it is free for anyone to download AFAICT. Biggest feature enhancements seem to be:
- Autosurf (Grab a load of websites for offline viewing)
- Voice Recognition!?!?!
-
Could someone explain what is this product for ? On the IBM site they only have an ipk. There is no documentation at all, no screenshots ....
And the subject of this is opera 7
-
Someone else might be able to explain IBM\'s Websphere Everywhere stuff better, but in general it\'s all about browser based enterprise applications. Instead of writing and compiling a native application or even using a plain Java app, everything is done through a web browser. So there\'s no distribution required.
This particular ipk is a demonstration of what they call a Multi-modal Browser. I think when it boils down to it, it just means that you can control the browser and HTML application with your voice. As part of this, the ipk contains Opera 7, which has the voice recognition enhancements, and it also has 3 offline demonstration HTML applications.

umm, yes, but the point of the registration is that you have to agree to a certain license. But you wouldnt know that because someone gave you a user/pass.
In essence, you are violating the license that IBM and Opera are using.

Nice to know IBM is doing something for the Zaurus! And lpotter, your avatar is quite disturbing!

It goes along with the job.

Installed it on the c760...pleasantly surprised to hear the app talk! Nice idea.

Removed Outlaw\'s post regarding username/password. This bypasses measures that IBM put in place to access the file. IBM has the right to password protect their applications (yes, even if the D/L is for free.).

This Readme includes information about the IBM® WebSphere Everyplace Multimodal Browser (based on Opera technology).
The Multimodal browser adds the ability to run multimodal applications on your PDA.
Try the sample applications. To open the sample applications listed on the Welcome screen in the browser:
Press and hold the round center button.
Wait until you hear the beep.
Continue holding the button while you say the name of a sample application. Remember to speak into the microphone that is located on the left edge of device under a black plastic cover. You must say the exact words that are included in the link.
Release the button when you stop talking.
This should open the sample application, and you can use the microphone to add text to the sample Web pages.
Visit the Multimodal Web site: http://www.ibm.com/software/pervasive/multimodal (http://www.ibm.com/software/pervasive/multimodal)
The Web site contains additional information, including FAQs, white papers, and samples for the multimodal browser.

With the Opera browser open, you can set voice preferences.
To select features for using voice, tap the Menu key (or the toolbar icon), and select Preferences ] Voice.
The Listening key specifies the push-to-talk button.
By default, the Select key (center button) is the push-to-talk button. Press and hold this key while you talk.
Alternatively, you can select the Address Book key as the push-to-talk button. To do this:
From the Listening key list, choose Zaurus Key: man, and select OK. Then close the Opera browser.
From the Application screen, push the Menu key , and then select Settings ] Application Key. Next to the Address Book symbol, select Opera 7.0 Browser.
Restart Opera to activate the new listening key.
Tip: Try each listening key to find which one works better for you.
The Listening mode specifies how to use the Listening key.
By default, in Push to talk mode, you press and hold the button on the device while speaking, and then release the button.
In Push to activate mode, you press and release the button, and then say the response. When you finish speaking, it detects silence and automatically stops listening (if there is background noise, it might take a moment for the system to detect the end of speech).
Select the check box if you want a tap on the screen to stop the voice prompts (deselected by default).
Tap OK, and restart Opera to activate your changes.

IBM, Opera Will Create Multimodal Browser

if you extract the ipk and then extract the data.tar.gz file then you should have opera 7.11.9553 in /home/zaurus/.opera/opera_arm.ipk
I don\'t know if we are breaking the copyright...

If IBM (or someone) is porting Opera 7 to the Zaurus, and if it will work on mine (5500 with tkcROM v1), there will be celebrations in my house tonight
The one major gripe I have about the current Zaurus Opera browser, is that it doesn\'t recognise the \"handheld\" media type in a CSS (stylesheet) link. This means that, unlike Opera for Symbian and for other handhelds, the browser can\'t automatically use a stylesheet optimised for a small screen, and for me, that was one of the things I was most looking forward to, before I bought my Z.
Until (if?) there\'s an Opera 7 for us Z users, it looks like I\'ll have to do a PHP browser \"sniff\" (to try and pick up the user-agent string for Z Opera, and serve the handheld stylesheet that way). As a Web standards-kind of Web developer, that really goes against my principles
In the meantime, this sounds like one to watch, anyway.

on a 5000D (without an external microphone) will the same voice commands work thru the microphone jack ? Or is this in any way just made to work on a 5600 with the external mic ?
Alos are the other features of the Opra on Z the same as on this version (apart from the multimodal feature) ? Can we actually replace the current opera with the IBM opera and use it for normal stuff too ?
Have to do a download today though....
-
So far I\'ve been using the new Opera 7 fine on my 760. Seems to do it all.
I didn\'t install the entire IBM package, I just pulled out the opera IPK as someone mentioned earlier.
I haven\'t figured out yet what the \"Zaurus\" key is for me, so I haven\'t tried the voice features.
The only difference I have seen so far is it \"feels cool\" to have a newer version. ;-)
I had to copy the icons from the ROM where the old Opera was to where the new one was installed (overwrite the new ones) to get the tool bar to have large enough icons to see again though.
-
Tres cool this stuff, and it works dandy on my 5500 with Opie 1.0.2, and ontop of it, it\'s freaking fast!
In other words, I like it quite. Does this piece also work on OpenZaurus 3.3.5?
-
if you extract the ipk and then extract the data.tar.gz file then you should have opera 7.11.9553 in /home/zaurus/.opera/opera_arm.ipk
Hoping not to sound like an idiot, but could you please explain how to do this?
-
I assume you have the ipk already transferred to your Z and you have opened Applications ] Konsole (OZ) or Applications ] Terminal (SharpROMs).
The ipk is either an ar archive (ar -x whatever.ipk) or a tar.gz archive (tar zxf whatever.ipk). When you unpack it you will find a file called data.tar.gz which you then unpack (tar zxf data.tar.gz) and you should see some new directories. Examine them to find the opera ipk or try searching the whole Z (find / -name opera_arm.ipk).

Installed on my 5000D. Takes a long time to install (thats also because I have /home on SD and SD writes are always slower) but the thing works beautifully.
The voice - speech from the browser is prett fast and easy to understand too.
The only thing is I havent been as yet able to get the thing to recognise my voice commands.
Each time I press the round button (or click on the extreme right hand round button widget or press space and voice my command (\"Flight demo\") it says \"could not understand\".
Dont know if its because of my accent :|
Anybody got the voice recognition part to work ?
But great piece of work. And Opera by itself with its features rocks.
Note added : Of course I have plugged in my headphones and am speaking into the left phone to use as a MIC. On the right side I can hear the speech from the browser, but my voice command are not recognised.
They say its for the 5600. Maybe only compatible with external MIC\'s ???

Thanks to all forthe eariler posts about how to _just_ install Opera 7. I have done that on my SL-5500, and it works! Let me first say that it _is_ great that there is still development going on, on the Zaurus.
That being said, I don\'t really \"see\" any new features (that I can use). The mic is greyed out, and although it is possible to block pop-ups, I am not sure what the improvements are that warrent a major rev number increase (6 to 7).
Am I missing something?

One of the enhancements is autosurf
Opera Palmtop can be configured to automatically download a set of web pages to your device, for local offline browsing later. When autosurfing Opera save the specified web pages to your Zaurus, possibly with images, and with linked documents. All pages set up for autosurfing get their own entry under Autosurf in the main menu, and you may start autosurfing the site by selecting this, or you may configure a day and time when Opera will initiate the autosurfing by itself.
To set up a site for autosurfing you must first select Autosurf/configure from the main menu , or you may enter the keyboard shortcut U . This will bring up the Autosurf configuration dialog.
To set up the current page for autosurfing you can just click the Add current button. To enter another page you click the New page button and enter the page\'s internet address in the top entry field and press return.
For each autosurfed page you can specify:
Save name - The name of the page that will appear in your Zaurus\' File view.
Storage - The storage media to save to, eg. Internal Storage or CF card.
With images - Whether to include any images on the page.
With java - Whether to include any java applets on the page
With plugins - Whether to include any plugin objects on the page (eg. Macromedia Flash content). Note that although Opera may save applets and plugins, you will have no guarantee that they will work 100% in an offline mode, as some applets and plugins rely on a network connection.
Follow links - Opera may download not only the given page, but also any page that it refers to, and then any page referred to by these pages et cetera. If you only want to download the initial page, you set this option to level 0. If you want also to download the pages it refers to, but no more, you set it to level 1, and so on for higher levels of indirection.
WARNING: Beware that too many levels of indirection may fill up your entire Zaurus, causing problems for Opera and other programs. While Opera supports up to 5 levels of indirection, this will be too much except in special cases where you are certain that you will not receive an excessive amount of information.
Matching pattern - To reduce the amount of pages from a recursive autosurf, you may specify a matching pattern. Only internet addresses beginning with the specified pattern will be downloaded.
Time to autosurf - You may set up a time for Opera to perform the autosurf, either weekly or daily. Select the desired day and time (24-hour), and make sure that you have set the correct time on your Zaurus. You may also specify \"On request\", in which case you must initiate the autosurfing from the main menu .
To accept the setup click either Ok which also closes the dialog, or Apply which saves your settings, but keeps the dialog open for you to configure other sites to autosurf. To discard your changes click Cancel .

Since this is a trial from IBM I wonder if the Opera binary has an expiration date compiled in.

Removed Outlaw\'s post regarding username/password. This bypasses measures that IBM put in place to access the file. IBM has the right to password protect their applications (yes, even if the D/L is for free.).

anyone else have problems with scaling (zooming) the page causing pages to mess up?
seems like a font problem.

Installs fine and opens but shuts down immediately on a fresh 750 / sash rom. Any ideas why ?

Or you will get a million alarms pop up at once and probably crash the thing. :?
-
I wanted a browser to run in 320x240 on the c7x0 model so I could review some graphics for a game I want to write --
but opera and netfront seem to run only in the native ... and kong will run (enlarged), but it won\'t scale down below
50%. I need to see how my images look at 20%, etc. All I get is a black box.

Think outside the box my friend...
killall datebook

It\'s Qtopia that handles alarms. It will just relaunch Datebook
-
Oh lord...
Think outside the box...
1) mv datebook datebook.bak
2) killall datebook
3) Move date forward AND TEST IF OPERA IS TRUELY A TRIAL
4) Move back date
5) mv datebook.bak datebook

I have set my zaurus 5600 date to 12/19/2005 an Opera 7 works fine :-)

What is the legal status of having Opera on the Zaurus. I was thinking the SL-C7xx models.
If permitted, was thinking of preinstalling it for our customers as an alternative to the existing (excellent I might add) Netfront browser.

That depends on which rom/QtE you have on it. You can\'t really legally run commercial qtopia apps with the GPL\'d QtE.
*cough* Distributing Opera might also not be legal.
Best check with Opera if they will allow it.
-
You can\'t really legally run commercial qtopia apps with the GPL\'d QtE.
But doesn\'t that also apply to the full version of the GPL\'d QT? That would make it illegal to run shared-QT Opera on most Linux distros. (But do we really want to get started on that one again?)
Distributing Opera might also not be legal.
Now that I could see Opera having a problem with that, since their app without adverts is not supposed to be free. Sharp did a deal with Opera for the Zaurus, but this lets people with other Qtopia+Linux PDAs use it freely.
I tried Opera 7, but ended up uninstalling it because it was so memory hungry that it kept forcing Qtopia to kill off my Fast Loaded apps just when it started. The Autosurf option also did not appear on my menu. Becareful though if you uninstall it as it deletes all of /home/zaurus/.opera .
-
Awww.....Come on..... Can\'t we f\'up another thread speculating on licensing issues ...
I say, don\'t worry about the GPL/LGPL linking thing. As long as we have a republican administration, communisum such as the GPL will never be validated in a court of law. Please don\'t flame me, I like the GPL (and communisum... in theory)
Opera could have a legit beef, you may want to carefully read the IBM license that pops up before you download mm_download_sl5600.ipk. That might give you some insight.

I have installed the opera_arm.ipk onto SD (ext2). The top right icon (mic?) is greyed out. How do I turn on the voice functions?
They only work on special web pages with VoiceML in them. The voice control isn\'t to control the browser, but is for controlling special web applications like the ones included in the complete ipk.

Anyone encounter this ?

All that says is that Opera is a third party app and subject to a separate license agreement.

FYI: the opera version has been upgraded by IBM from 7.11 to 7.30. ;-)
-
I downloaded and installed Opera 7.30 mainly for the autosurfing function mentioned earlier (an avantgo like feature/app is one of the biggest things missing from the Zaurus\'s arsenal IMHO). It installs just fine, but I can\'t seem to find the autosurfing function. In an earlier post, it seemed like autosurf was off of the main menu of opera. Was this taken out of the 7.30 version, or am I just missing something simple.
BTW I\'m on a new 5600 with a 802.11.b c/f card. I\'ve tried both the full multimodal install and just the opera ipk

have it installed on my sd card would that made a difference?
edit: installed on ram and tried suggested fix but still got the exact same errors.
-
did you cd /usr/share first?
-
I\'m having the same problem, I got it down to having ZStyle & ZStyle Liquid loaded. I take these off and Opera 7.30 runs again.
Tried ln -s /opt/QtPalmtop/opera opera but that didn\'t change anything. Would like to run both but at this time having Opera is more important than my Z having a nice looking display.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Jim
-
tapjpa,
To have your cup of liquid and opera at the same time do the following:
1) fire up Zstyle app
2) go to the 5th tab (with a wrench icon)
3) i assume you have \"force styling for all applications\" turned on
There are two fixes:
1) turn of \"force styling for all applications\"
or, better yet
2) add \"opera\" as an exception below and leave it turned on by clicking the \"+\" button, and typing \"opera\" as a binary file exception to the \"force styling\" rule

Thanks that did the trick!

I have the same issue. I can\'t find any autosurf feature anywhere. The Help function doesn\'t mention it or the shortcut U to access this function.
It would appear that in the upgrade from 7.11 to 7.30 has removed this functionality.
Can any comment or point me to a copy of version 7.11 :-)
Thanks

There is no autosurf in opera 7.11 either.

Oh!
But it was mentioned earlier in this thread as being part of the multi-modal ipk. Do you have to install that rather than the opera.ipk you can extract from it.

I\'ve tried all Opera versions for zaurus - autosurf was never there.

I think AutoSurf was mentioned in the Help for Opera 7.11 but it definitely never had that feature.
If you really want that sort of thing, you could use something like sitescooper or wwwoffle

ok, I downloaded the IBM Multimodal thingie and now I got a Websphere Multimodal tool installation app.

2nd install
opera-cseries-fix_7.30_arm.ipk
third.
just because you installed these, it does not mean that you can bookmark since permissions are changed. in order for you to bookmark or save settings in opera, you need to change permissions for a certain directory.
change permission in /home/zaurus by

chown -R zaurus:qpe /home/zaurus/.opera
chmod 700 /home/zaurus/.opera

ok, I flashed and reflashed ... and reflashed my Z5500 with Opie, and then 3.10 SHARP ROM, and now its stable. Got 7.5 Opera installed and it worked right off ... I think I ran out of space to install earlier.
waiting for my SD card to come and I can run /home and install apps off the SD card. Need CF slot for wifi.
-
Here's a little trick to save some space:
The opera executable (opera) is ~4.5MB and it lives at /home/QtPalmtop/bin
Copy it to somewhere on your SD card, delete it from /home/QtPalmtop/bin, and replace it with a link to the copy on the SD card.
e.g.:
cd /home/QtPalmtop/bin
cp opera /mnt/card/mybindir/.
rm opera
ln -s /mnt/card/mybindir/opera
You just freed-up ~4.5MB of internal storage space.
~ray
PS: That works with any large executable and is very useful for those that won't install to SD. You just have to remember to delete it off your SD card if you ever uninstall the app. (If you forget to it won't cause any problems, but it will eat up some storage space.)
-
Some great tips there guys, thanks.
-
Does Opera work on Hengtes rom? I tried installation but it just does not appear on opie. Ideas?

Ditto on that. I just did it with konqueror, which even though I have home on sd (tKc rom), would not install there. This speeds it up quite a bit.
