Title: A regional 'Hello'
Post by: jamesm on September 07, 2004, 09:19:57 am
Hello to all the Z-UK users.

I'm James, I'm based near Reading (Hampshire).

I've been a long time Linux user, so I want to try something based on *nix but I've never owned a PDA, because of my dread fear of PPC and WinCE. After reading such good things about the Sharp Zaurus' (what is the plural? - Zaurii?) and speaking to other PDA and Linux users I've decided to join the club, so to speak.

The C-Series look great but I'm not going to break the bank until I know that I'll get on with these devices. The compromise at the moment is to take the plunge and import an SL-5600 to the UK from the US.

Does anyone have any experience of reputable importers? So far I've contacted shirtpocket.co.uk and am awaiting a response. Otherwise I've found several US ebay sellers who are willing to ship a new boxed 5600 for around £220 (plus shipping and tax).

Looking forward to much future Zaurus hacking (once I've got my hands on one)

Hi James,
I Got my Z SL-C3100 from Conics.net.
Brett there has been very helpful. I ordered on Monday and got it on Friday.
I also managed to kill it the following week by trying to install OpenBSD.
Conics are currently doing some in house testing to aid me in restoring my DEAD Z.

Regards
Paul

Hi James,

Wiser heads than mine will correct me if I'm wrong but, from reading the forums, I think that, because of the small number of units sold there is less support for new software roms etc. for the 5600 than for any other Zaurus.

Therefore you may be better off buying a 5500 which, although older, was launched worldwide and as there are more of them better supported.  It may even be a little bit cheaper.  I think I remember seeing one mentioned on here recently for 140 usd.

Welcome and Enjoy,

Chas
