Title: Kathrin RC3 ready..
Post by: Laze on September 07, 2004, 05:34:28 pm
So we have finished the next RC - this time RC3 - too tired to write anything long and fancy - btw. there is also a native SDK included.

Download here:
www.pdaXrom.org (http://www.pdaxrom.org/index.php?showid=40&menuid=11)
Mirrors are comming soon..
RC feed is not updated yet.

New users should flash entire - RC2 users should be able to use the upgrade functions from the flashing menus in ROM updater :-) Update: - Sorry looks like the update function did make it into the RC3 - please just flash entire ROM.

As always you can show your appreciation of our work by using banners or donating :-)

Quick change and fix list:
- Native SDK
- OSS mixer: https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...indpost&p=40772 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=73&t=6361&hl=oss&view=findpost&p=40772)
- Better "profile/settings" loader/selector for network/looknfeel etc.
- New top graphics after rebooting and flashing
- Suspend/resume in rotated make "jumble" on screen (xrefresh)
- SciTE not in the panel menu
- Small fonts in calibration - should be bigger
- F1-F10 support - mapped to the fn+F1-fn+F10 keys
- PageUp/Down - mapped to the fn+Arrow Up/Arrow Down keys
- Home/end - mapped to fn+Arrow Left/Arrow Right keys
- Improved Startx and mbsession with less errors and warnings
- Fonts problems in startx script
- console font for Aterm
- Right shift working again
- Suspend/Resume and then suspend again bug fixed
- Volume applet fails to load and set volume after restarting gui with look & feel settings
- Volume applet causes "an error" on startx load - it seems to be an gtk error

Bugreport fixes:
mplayer-1.0pre3try2 Bus error when run on C860
request ext3 and reiserfs kernel modules ...
mplayer doesn't run 320x240 fullscreen mode
(use: xrandr -s 1 | mplayer movie.avi - then press Shift+Alt+Right for move video window on free desktop and press key 'f'
Can't exit X cleanly after suspend
Various look & feel app and panel glitches
Huge security hole with SSH
ALT doesn't work in terminal.
Menu button Opening the Matchbox
Volume Control applet sometimes hang
Xrom too root-centric
Font problems, at least in Qt applications
IPKG script bug
weirdness when suspending from gui
Right shift key doesn't work on C750
Script based ipkg is still a bit flakey
Undefined symbols on existing packages
gaim segfaults
Vorbis shared library missing

Ps. Tomorrow more and better information will be put online - this is just for really for hardcore testers :-)

just one thing: what do you mean with "upgrading"?
Title: Kathrin RC3 ready..

From the flash menu in our flasher you should be able to use the upgrade function instead of flashing it all again.

The RC2 and RC3 should need no modifications or anything to alter the root size - so yes.. Please just use the included tools in the flash menu of our rom flasher..

Just downloaded the rom, trying to use the upgrade function -- when I choose 'Upgrade previous pdaXrom (>=1.1.0)', it still says 'Not finished yet...'

Still have to reflash the entire thing, I guess

WOW, xrandr now supports QVGA (320x240)! Now that's really an IMPROVEMENT! Finally pdaXrom meets first class gaming and multimedia. THANK YOU!

Ok people, I'm going to update ScummVM package shortly. I will also compile a fresh dosbox.

And yes, I'm looking forward to donate a hundred bucks once I finally get my credit card reissued.

Installing the 'fonts' package breaks X -- it will no longer start, complaining about the 'fixed' font missing. The origins of the problem are quite simple really -- overwritten files, but as I started to document the way to fix the problem I ran into some strange stuff here. I guess I will elaborate on the matter tomorrow, for I really feel tired now.

For now, people, just don't install 'fonts' if you have no familiarity with the fonts in X.

p.s. This rom looks very nifty! But I really have to take a break and have some sleep at the moment

I did the same thing, but haven't done a NAND restore yet. I've been limited to a 45 root partition. Let me know if NAND restore works for you. You can find the NAND backups here (http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/service-menus/original-backups/)

In RC2 after I removed the 64 MB limit there was no need to use the Ashley patch. It or something similar was built in, and I got one large partition. You might want to try going ahead without running the patch before you retreat to NAND backups. I believe there is a bit more on this point in the RC2 thread.

installing Minimo results in a fonts pkg installation, with the bad effects ikm pointed out

a question about the on-board sdk: I tried to compile some simple c code (tcp sockets stuff) and the compiler couldn't recognize bcopy, strerror ecc (with correct includes before). Any hint?

I installed the webfonts-courier package, restarted X, but no additional fonts appeared. I had to move /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttf/* to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF -- then it worked.

Update: I also tried crox-cyrillic -- X didn't want to start after the installation, once again complaining about the 'fixed' font missing. "cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc && mkfontdir" fixed the problem. 'mkfontdir' should really be run from the postinst script, if that is supported by the .ipk package format, of course.

I had tried to increase the root partition in RC-2 without much luck. While exploring the NAND flash utilitiy I accidently hit the remove 64mb limit option which is for C760 & 860s only. The resultant flash pattern was not recognizable by Ashley's updater. The NAND restore worked and the Ashley mtdtest script returned a recognized flash pattern.

I then tried to increase root partition with the RC-3 updater and on my C750: 57, 55, 54, 53,52, and 50 MB partitions didn't work. The flash worked with out error but it wouldn't boot past the pdaxrom splash screen. I finally settled on the 45 BM partition I used in RC-2. This might be a bug in the updater that only effect C750s. I'll try Ashley's updater next to see if that'll work (could it be the maintance kernel? The Ashley updater doesn't work on the 750 until the maintance kernel is patched).

Other wise the release looks great, I still would like to see a verbose kernel during boot up. Great work Sashz & team!

Cheers,

Jerry

On the partition sizes and C750: you have to patch the kernel to mount a big enough partition! The C750 kernel has a hard limit on the maximum partition size, thereas the C760 does not have it. Try using the C760 kernel on your C750, I recall people reporting that it actually worked.

Technical details: The kernel by default uses kmalloc in jffs2 code, thus limiting the internal allocations to the 64k. For the C760 (HUSKY), it uses consistent_alloc instead, using a set of #ifdefs. consistent_alloc allows for bigger allocations.

It is all here: cd linux/fs/jffs2 && grep -r HUSKY *

build.c:#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY
build.c:#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY
fs.c:#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY
nodelist.h:#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY
super.c:#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY
super-v24.c:#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY

These were all that ifdefs. Looking, for instance, in build.c, we see the following:

Code: [Select]
int jffs2_do_mount_fs(struct jffs2_sb_info *c)
{
    int i;

    c->free_size = c->flash_size;
    c->nr_blocks = c->flash_size / c->sector_size;
#ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_PXA_HUSKY
    c->blocks = consistent_alloc(GFP_KERNEL,
         sizeof(struct jffs2_eraseblock) * c->nr_blocks,
         &c->blocks_phys);
#else
    c->blocks = kmalloc(sizeof(struct jffs2_eraseblock) * c->nr_blocks, GFP_KERNEL);
#endif
    if (!c->blocks)
  return -ENOMEM;

And so on. So the problem is quite easy to fix -- the jffs2 behaviour should be unconditional HUSKY for all the models. I made and attached the patch. I haven't tested it, but it should work, as it is very simple.

Maybe this problem should be addressed in RC4?

Cool work, pdaXrom !!!! down here, third world country life is not that easy, but I will donate a sum I can manage, thru a friend's paypal or creditcard in order to help with your work !!!

Anyway, I would like to confirm the bug that sd cards doesnt mount. They dont mount at boot, or from the shelll ...

mount /dev/mmcd/disc0/part1 /mnt/card   gives an error ....
I cannot issue a mkfs or an e2chk neither ! So, unless there is something I am not doing right, it seems that SD cards are a no-no in this test release.

Also, Laze, behaviour in this RC with my problem with WIFI, is far more consistent, and the same than with Cacko: now my wifi tries to connect, and after some seconds it decides it cannot. Which is correct...

Regards!!!

Enrique !

Great work.  My main concern with RC2 were the screen issues (flickering and what not).  While RC3 fixed the major flickering problems, some still remain.  The entire screen is just, well, shaky.  That is the best way I can describe it.  And I guess the shaky sympton I describe could also be flickering related.  I do have very good eyes, so perhaps that is part of the problem.

I was starting to worry that perhaps I had a screen problem.  My unit is only a few weeks old.  Initially I had the Sharp ROM and that was fine.  Then I went to pdaX and saw the flickering problem.  While RC3 improved, the problem is still there for me, which led me to believe it might be a screen problem.  This morning, after RC3, I went to Cacko - perfect screen.  So it's definitely pdaX related.

I'm running an 860, FYI.

I'm going to stick with Cacko for a while - it looks real nice.  But I still plan on funding your development with a paypal donation next week (plus, you guys are responsible for Cacko too!).  I do hope you guys will fix this issue, as I'd like to eventually go back to pdaX.

ikm: thanks for the info. I almost understood the explanation.  You're right the 760 kernel does allow larger partitions. Hopefully RC-4 or the final version will support C750 larger partitions with a patched kernel.

Here's how I got it to work:
Flashed RC-3 with 50 mb partition, rebooted into flash menu with a different CF card with the extracted C-760 zImage.bin and an old cacko updater.sh. Flashed the extracted zImage.bin.

Rebooted, almost success. Can't cd to root directory message upon login. Evidently the .home_default.tar wasn't extracted as there is no /home/root dir. So I ran
Code: [Select]
cd /root
tar xf .home_default.tar
Then was able to run startx

A bit of a pain but it works.

Cheers,
Jerry

I experience the same thing, and I experienced it with every version of pdaXrom I had installed since the very first ones. It was always there. The problem shows itself best on the left scrollbar of the aterm once it appears. The problem only shows with the high brightness, the higher the better, and it goes away when the brightness is lowered. As I usually work in low-brightness mode (1 or 2, sometimes 3), I don't normally notice it, but the problem still exists.

At first I started to think that maybe it is a problem with my hardware. But I never experienced it on the qtopia roms. Then I thought maybe it was the wrong combinations of colors that produce that effect, akin to convergence problems with CRT monitors. I haven't tried to check that -- I guess it is sufficent to take a screenshot from the pdaXrom, the one where it shakes, and try displaying it fullscreen on the qtopia rom is some image viewer. The screenshot should obviously be in some lossless format, the is, not a jpeg one. I haven't tried that -- maybe someone should check that out.

I'm glad someone else is seeing it.  I definitely could not use the ROM if that condition continues.  It drives me crazy, to be honest.  But I'm actually starting to like Cacko quite a bit.  I don't think I'll be using the Z as a laptop replacement, since I already have a laptop.  On the other hand, I was hoping I could get Evolution running on pdaXrom.  Well, I'll wait it out and see what happens.

Nice work pdaXrom team! Way to go!
Below some early experiences. Hopefully they are somewhat helpful.

Flashing - okay
Just reflashed from RC2 to RC3 on a C860. The flashing went smooth and flawless. RC2 was installed with one full root partition of 121MB.

Screen - works fine, no flicker
After switching the device on the screen flickers a bit but then it stabilizes.

Taskbar icons disappear - bug
Lost all icons on the task bar simply by opening up 'look & feel' and clicking OK. It restarts X (or mb) and after matchbox shows the taskbar is empty. This is obviously a bug. It is reproducable.
Adding applets and buttons back is easy and works fine.

Wifi configuration - okay
Configured wifi (using Socket CF card) by creating a new profile and setting network type to wireless, auto DHCP and auto DNS, using my AP's ESSID and 128 bit WEP hex key. Immediately after clicking 'Ok' a connection was made and internet connectivity was restored. Beautiful!

Window resize problem
Opened up the default installed applications. Found that I can't resize some applications by dragging the bottom right corner (although the cursor changes shape to indicate it is resizing). Could not resize any of the office applications. All of the internet applications were fine however.
It is nice to see applications that remember their screen position and size. Some don't however and especially when they start up too large it is slightly annoying you have to resize them each time you use them. This might be hard to solve but I'll just note it here since I'm on the subject.

Music - okay
xmms plays mp3 fine, volume applet works fine

Package manager package-version problem (old)
RC2 had the problem that everytime you installed a package it reinstalled all dependencies, including xfree in some cases. This hasn't happened yet
Tried to install firefox. (I'm using 2 feeds (www.pdaXrom.com/feed and feed2)
The package manager lists both version 0.8 and 0.9 in the list (diffent feeds?). Selecting and installing v0.9 did end up installing v0.8 however. Is this a bug in ipkg?
Anyway, removed the old feed and stuck to feed2 which has v0.9. Reinstalled firefox. Works like a charm.

Feature requests:
Easy way to see active tasks (without closing window or pressing alt-tab)
Fix cpu monitor applet - it always show 100% (its on the bug list)

I'll post more when I have tested some other stuff.
So far great work!

I tried to compile some C code from sciTE - it uses g++.

I couldn't get my code compiled, because the compiler doesn't recognize C procedures like bcopy or strerror (included the right libraries).

Is a problem of installed libraries? How can I solve?

edit - SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wrote half a line in the sciTe c-compiling settings

. xmonobut should be added to the rom
. Does anyone play with gtkboard? the window of most game I tried has a fix size that is beyond Zaurus resolution.

. Maybe make should be added to he sdk image

I haven't tried things from the feed(s) yet as my SDs are all full -- time to clean house!

I didn't repartition, I just used the same partition size that I had for rc2.
rc3 installed, and even untarred /home/root -- although the screen does show some
output (errors?) for a split second.... unlike rc2, I did have files in root's home.

I like the new top graphics -- simple and clean... and the scroll area for the console, etc.
Also, there aren't bluetooth errors on the console, etc.

I tried most apps with the default rom -- very nice.

GAIM wasn't able to save an account for irc.
I didn't have any other accounts configured... went to accounts, added irc...
hit save -- and the app went away (crashed?)

The screen flickers SOME on the left side -- but much less than previous versions...

Use alt + stylus drag.

Still playing with RC-3 and have run into a couple of issues, not sure if they are bugs or a result of my ignorance:
I've set screen off in light & power to 0 when plugged in, but still it turns off after about 5 min (at least  it doesn't suspend).

ipkg manager works much better but I had one install crash (lost internet connection) and now I've got the dreaded can't download __.ipk error message. In previous ROMs I could remove the offending line in the ipkg status file and install would then work. I've checked both status files (internal memory and SD) and they have no mention of failed install, where else is this info stored so I can remove it?

Thanks,

Jerry

Hello Pgas,

I also noticed that make is missing (trying the newvox example). Have you solved that problem? Which make do you use?

Regards,

Fabian

Uhm... I hate to bring this issue back ... but just to be sure: Kathrin RC3 is a NO NO for SD card usage ?

I just reformatted my SD card in my desktop, with fat16 ... (it was ext2 from RC2 before that) ...

I plug it in my 860 and RC3 stills declares "empty" the sd slot ...

regards,

Regarding the SD card issue. I'm using a 512MB SD card with RC3 without problems on a C760.

Leave the card in the Zaurus and reboot it with the card inside. It might help.

REGARDING SD:

My SD completely refuses to start ... either with a reboot or by hot inserting ...

REGARDING GAIM:

My GAIM (that is the one which came with RC3), loads OK, but when I try to send a MSN MESSAGE to a friend, when I hit SEND, GAIM DISSAPEARS (just like in RC2!!) I thought that this GAIM FAULT was included in the fixed bugs ... I had to uninstall it and install GAIM 0.77 ...

WHICH MAKES ME THINK:

ARE THERE DIFFERENT C860 VERSIONS OF ZAURUS AROUND ? (and for the case same thing happening with 760, 650 and 700)

I base my question on the fact that, by reading what happens with other persons, and me, I can easily see that the same software (starting with RC2 or RC3 itself), freshly installed, issues different behaviours with apparently the same HARDWARE.

LIKE:

1) SOME GUYS SEE THEIR ZAURUS SCREEN FLICKER !!! COME ON! I SEE MY ZAURUS SCREEN FLICKER and it would freak me out big time.

2) Others can use SD without problems ... I cant even format it

3) Others use certain wifi cards, while other people can't (and this can be true for all kind of cf cards) ... the usual reaction is to blame on a faulty CF ....

4) Sometimes I see a white "BLANKET" covering slowly all my screen... when this happens I press "HOME" and I get the MATCHBOX again. Others get a FURIOUS BLINK of screen when turning back from  suspension (I SEE THAT TOO, only 4 times and it stops)

I recall the early days of AMIGA COMPUTERS, when at least I knew the name and function of every chip inside it ... and -like the GARY chip- when some of these BLEW OUT, the machine could keep working, and even you maybe didn't detect that it was blown, until you did certain things that turned on the evidenceable behaviour. Maybe we should know better what can go wrong with the zaurus ...

MAYBE we should make friends  with a Sharp / zaurus team / designer / engineer member  and make him / her confess all the tricks !

The SD problem is very well documented and is because of some hacking - in the next version a better and improved version will be included.

We are still looking into the GAIM problem and the screen flickering.

Something new for many users too:

A: You can use Alt+Ctlr+Left/Right arror to switch between the different desktops

I notice that there are now 4 virtual desktops instead of 2... that is a step in the right direction.
I still prefer 6, but I can change that.

It would be nice if there was a slot in the popup menu or single key that could move
virt desktops .... one of the reasons why I use the second - 4 or 6th desktop instead
of the main is that I can clai back the space used for the bar at the bottom... I notice
that the menu key no pulls up the menu (skipping space for the bar, whether it's there
or not) ... so a menu entry right there to do certain things would be great.

screen brigher, screen darker, screen off, desktop left, desktop right.

oh, further.. I am using a 256mb SD that I use with 1.0.1 (1.0.1 on 760, 1.1.0 rc3 on 700).
xmahjongg gets the missing symbol -- I didn't try the LD fix... but firefox still loads!
I didn't try others yet... just ipkg-link mount /mnt/card etc... :-)

Ya, I use to have the Atari 8bit... still love te emulators.
GTIA, ANTIC .. and who can forget TOM & JERRY (know the chips in the Atari JAG) etc.

Is openbox working right in this release?

I cannot select any X window that is launched from the aterm, the aterm remains the selected window always. This is preventing me using vncviewer at all on RC3?

using it for a while now, and I find it amazing.

No screen problems (little flickering only when back from blanking, and just for a second)
No SD problems
No wireless problems
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING dev. possibilities - sciTE + sdk... they rock!
xkbd is a nice toy, while waiting for something a bit more X-integrated, a bit less X-slave (not so desiderable the kbd into a normal window, but a big step ahead  )
No GAIM problems
No installation problem
Good battery life (finally  - I don't know what's changed but...)

I'd like:
1) active tasks on the bar
2) bar icons associated with kbd combo or keys
3) opengl better support - gl, glu, (glut)
4) the GIMP 2
5) Firefox is fantastic, but a Netfront-ish browser would be apreciated (tab-dillo?)
6) trying to find something else but... well, I'm too satisfied!

FINALLY I got a micro-laptop, I put my bid on Cacko/pdaXrom team when I bought my sl-c860, and you guys did it!!

going to complete my account procedures in the next days.. some $$upport coming soon

...and also thinking about a way to help you

thank you all. PdaXrom + ZUG are half the value of my tresshhure

Dear Developers!

Will be a configuration tool to set custom shortcuts to the five icons on the right part of the screen? Should I add a feature request or it's already on your todo list?
Until that it would be good to know how to change them by hand.

It's quite easy. You should edit keybind definitions in /etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml, needed ones are for XF86* keys.

I've just noticed that SciTE is segfaulting on fresh install of RC3. Ko/Pi segfaults too, if libgcc_s.so is in LD_PRELOAD.

P.S. No need to say again about gaim segfaults.

never had a seg.fault on my sl-c860

I cannot install thunderbird... ipkg speaks about error in the package every time.

I have been able to install Thunderbird on my c860, but it claims that there is insufficient disk space and refuses to get mail. This happened both on install to a 1GB SD card and to RAM, and there was ample free space. Firefox and other programs are working fine from the SD card, and other email clients retrieve mail without difficulty.

Wot no brighness control?

I know you can set up display brightness for mains/batt in the "Light and Power" app, which is a great addition, thanks.  But I'm surprised that Fn-3 and Fn-4 don't do what they say on the keyboard, especially as this

https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=4728 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4728)

describes how to do it, and it works so well!  I don't think this is in the buglist - happy to file it as a feature request if necessary.

Is there any chance to feature builtin support for Japanese input? im-ja isn't really working too well on RC3 for me, despite multiple variations on the installation. X is a great thing, but I don't really care much for it if I don't have international support. :/

Thanks so much for your help so far, though! This does work really nice.
