Greetings,
I did some research for this for another thread, but thought it is SO cool (and works so well, not to mention easy to setup) it deserved it's own thread (to get noticed) and utilized.
____________________________________________________________________
The ZNester (NES Emulator) program is works GREAT (with full screen and full sound).
I coupled it with ZEMU and it works even better (make sure to select Settings->Frontend->by Qtopia in ZEMU and you will get FULLSCREEN use, otherwise command line will only give you a small area in the screen).
Here are the links...everything you need to get you started:
ZNester Program (command Line) (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=979)
ZEMU (GUI, just set this up to call ZNester and add the folder that contains all the games and then you can simply select from the list to play a game) (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1176)
GAMES/ROMS:
Web Page with individual links for a great set of games(ROMS) (http://tbd.yi.org/nes/)
OR
Or click here to download ALL the games on that site and then you can delete the one which you don't own (see copyright info below) (http://tbd.yi.org/nes/all_games.zip)
(Note: The site for the roms contains just a small subset of the NES ROMS out there..Use Google to find more NES Rom Sites)
Keys for use.:
Arrows (obviously)
X and Z are ussually action buttons.
Cancel = Exit
Enter = Start game (when pressed at game title screen)
Note: The ROMS page says these are the default controls, so if the above don't work try these (Cacko QT maps the Japanese keys to ALT and Control):
A - Alt
B - Control
Select - Tab
Start - Enter
UPDATE:
There is another ROM page that has "Ad's" that may be offensive to some people so I originally did not post it... however, it has literally hundreds of NES games including 1200-in-1 ROMS with 1200 games/variations (there are also 100in1, 35 in1, 120in1, etc,etc) and lots of single roms. If anyone wants to go to the link then they must assume full responsibility for thier own sensibilities and understand that I do NOT approve of the Ads (nor do I have any association to the site), but since it is a WEALTH of ROMS, I felt it selfish to not share the address:
Click here for HUNDREDS OF ROMS - WARNING: INSENSITIVE ADS (http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/nes/a.html)
Note:As with all Emulators and ROMS, please make sure to abide by copyrights laws, etc. Thes games are generally only legal to download the ROMS if you own the actual game already (sort of as a backup). For those of you who have web space or upload programs to various sites, make sure to never bundle an Emulator with a ROM or set of ROMS. This is for your legal protection and that of your fine upstanding user group administrator and owner[/i]

Commodore 64 Emulator for X11 (http://www.mmhart.com/commodore_64_for_zaurus.htm#What%20about%20the%20rest)
Huge C64 ROM(Games) page. (http://www.c64.com/)
UPDATE:
FRODO and FRODO GUI for QT Environments (http://www.lachner-net.de/index_en.html) (thanks kfetisov)
Excerpt:
"The emulator needs also C64 ROM files. For copyright reasons this files are not included in the ipk package. This files can, for example, copied from a original C64. After Frodo is installed on the Zaurus, this files must be copied to "/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/frodo". The following files are needed:
* Kernal ROM
* Basic ROM
* Char ROM
* 1541 ROM "
Soooooo, you'll need these ROMS Required by FRODO:
KERNAL, BASIC, 1541 AND CHAR ROMS (http://wwwthep.physik.uni-mainz.de/~cbauer/FrodoV4_1b.Src.tar.gz)
Instructions:
Operating instructions for the Frodo Zaurus version
* The cursor keys on the Zaurus can be used to emulate a joystick. The emulation can be activated with the tabulator key and 'J'. The mode of the emulation is shown in the lower right corner. If a Joysticks in port one is emulated a 1 is shown, for port two a 2 is shown. If no emulation is active nothing is shown.
* The C64 function keys can be reached by the following key combinations on the Zaurus:
o F1 - Tabulator and 'Q'
o F2 - Tabulator and 'W'
o F3 - Tabulator and 'E'
o F4 - Tabulator and 'R'
o F5 - Tabulator and 'T'
o F6 - Tabulator and 'Z'
* The Run/Stop key is mapped to Tabulator and 'O'.
* The Restore key is mapped to Tabulator and 'P'.
* To quit the emulator, press the menu key.
Hi!
Here is home page of Frodo for Zaurus (great C64 emulator):
http://www.lachner-net.de/index_en.html (http://www.lachner-net.de/index_en.html)
It work fine under QT, but for use of "?," key you must shut down keyhelper (khctl disable in console) before starting emulator.

Hi,
I am running FRODO on a Zaurus C860 and I am having a few problems hat I was hoping you could help with:
1) The screen is tiny...How do I make it full screen like the C700 picture on the web page of FRODO?
2) I copied FRODOGUI settings and I can load games, but how do I get them to RUN ? (RUN doesn't WORK).
3) How do you Exit FRODO gracefully?
Thank you

First install Lib sdl
download lib sdl (http://wiki.self-core.org/atty/?SDL)
note: this is version 1.2.5, some ppl say ver. 1.2.6 got problem with some of the emulator
then install zlib
download zlib (http://club.h14m.org/kenji/diary/?200303a&to=200303011#200303011)
then install Zemu
download Zemu (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1176)
Just the same one in first post of this thread
then u can install other emulators
download snes emulator (http://www.suhami.net/zaurus/index.cgi?Emulator%2fsnes9x)
download GBA emulator (http://www.suhami.net/zaurus/index.cgi?Emulator%2fVBA)
download GB emulator (http://www.self-core.org/~kaoru-k/wiki/GnuboyOnLinuxZaurus.html)
download WonderSwan emulator (http://www.suhami.net/zaurus/index.cgi?Emulator%2fOswan)
note: plz install lib sdl, zlib and Zemu first, b4 installing any emulator
otherwise it might not work

How do you save your game? I selected save after dying in "Legend of Zelda", but when I restarted zemufe, my character had not been saved. Any tips?
-
Found jdralphs earlier post with link to znester keybindings at this link:
znester keybindings (http://wiki.self-core.org/atty/?znester)
the 7 on keyboard is savestate, and 0 (zero) is loadstate.
Thanks to jdralph for the link!!

Are these for the CX00 series or only fo SL series?
also what is WonderSwan?
Thnks for all the links and directions.

All these work with zports 1.2.6 SDL for SL-cxx0. The packages can be had on my feed at:
http://bryandeluca.com/feed/ (http://bryandeluca.com/feed/)
Enjoy!
-
I only know they all work for CXX0 series, I have tried it on my C860
and ppl use these on earlier models.
But I am not sure abt SL series, sorry..
Wonder Swan is a portable game console, similar to GBA, etc.
It's made by Bandai, but it was only popular for a while and only in Japan and Hong Kong tho...
-
I just got snes9x going on my sparkly new C860, and it would be fantastic except it won't register more than two simultaneous keypresses. I can finagle three by using a modifier key (i.e. Shift) for one of them, but it's awkward.
Is everyone just playing games that don't need the multiple-button pressing or is there something I can actually do to improve matters? I'd like to be able to play Umihara Kawase, which practically mandates at least four simulaneous keys...
-
pelrun,
I have never had that problem. I've played through quite a few games and multiple key presses definately works on my Z. I never even configured the key mappings either. Is there anything that is different in your key mapping from the vanilla configuration?
-
Thanks for this info. There are some fun games. I guess that the site is down, but I can't get to the self-core.org site.

2) I copied FRODOGUI settings and I can load games, but how do I get them to RUN ? (RUN doesn't WORK).
3) How do you Exit FRODO gracefully?
1) The key for me was to turn off magnification for frodogui, but leave it on for frodo. Then I get a full screen that looks just like my good old c64.
2) Ok, go to http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/FRMain.html (http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/FRMain.html) and following the link to download the c64 manual. Use that in combination with your post above. If you use frodogui to select your game and then run frodo, you just press shift-tab-o and off you go.
3) You answered your own question in your previous post, press 'Menu'. You can use shift-tab-o (Run/Stop) to end an individual game and a game program to return to the cursor. Then you can use the load command to run a new game if you want to.
-
Is there anything that is different in your key mapping from the vanilla configuration?
No, but then again my setup is vanilla vanilla. Original sharp rom (awaiting SD card so I can reflash), with the japanese IME intact. I've got a sneaking suspicion it might be the IME that's filtering the keystrokes.
So on the one hand it looks like I'm in luck and it's not a hardware limitation, but on the other hand I might have to sacrifice my J input to get around it. And on the gripping hand, the keyboard would probably be way too awkward to play Umihara Kawase on it even if I could get it working
-
self-core is down, anyone feel like hosting/emailing the ipk's for zemu?
edit: stupkid has them mirrored, thanks a lot
Is anyone else getting reversed screen output and input on a C-860 with ZEmuFEEx? help
starting znester (or zemufe) from the CLI, i get:
"could not open translation file /home/QtPalmtop//i18n/en/libsl.qmid"
-
Damnit!
trying out snes9x with Bomberman2, i get:
QLibrary open failed!: /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqsfepj.so, libkke.so.1: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory
edit: I get the same error when trying to start another emulator (infones) from the CLI. What are those libs?
-
evi1,
Weird I do not have either of those libs on my Z. I do not get complaints about them missing either when I run snes9x. Where did you get your bin of snes9x?
-

http://www.suhami.net/zaurus/index.cgi?Emulator%2fsnes9x (http://www.suhami.net/zaurus/index.cgi?Emulator%2fsnes9x)
I'll check whether you host this package and try your feed.
When I try your version, i get sound, but no video (black screen), and the same error message. Do you use any particular switches? (i just did snes9x /filedir/romname).
I've wated to try cacko for a while, so I'm going to flash my Z and try again.
-
is the snes emulator very good
this might be too much to ask for but is it full speed with sound on most games
if it was that would convince me to get a zaurus
-
make7upyours:
Mine handles most game pretty damn well. The only problem I have had is the awkwardness of the keys, but that was gotten over rather quickly. It runs very smooth and I get sound. Don't expect every single game to work, but most of them do.
-
ev1|,
The package on my feed is from suhami.net as well. The way that I run snes9x is by creating a small shell script containing something like /home/QtPalmtop/bin/earthworm_jim.sh:
#!/bin/sh
/home/QtPalmtop/bin/snes9x -xs 320 -ys 240 "/home/zaurus/snes-roms/Earthworm_Jim_US.zip"
Then I create a link under games link like earthworm_jim.desktop:
[Desktop Entry]
Comment = snes9x
Exec = earthworm_jim.sh
Icon = earthworm_jim
Name = Earthworm Jim
Then click on the icon under games and it runs great with sound and all on my c860.
I also created a shell script that uploads my game configurations as they are created:
#!/bin/bash
#
# This script will update all the SNES game shell scripts and icons
SHDIR=/home/QtPalmtop/bin/
ICONDIR=/home/QtPalmtop/pics/
DESKTOPDIR=/home/QtPalmtop/apps/Games/
# Shell script update
for sh in *.sh; do
cp $sh $SHDIR/
chmod 755 ${SHDIR}/${sh}
done
# Icon image update
for icon in *.png; do
cp $icon $ICONDIR/
chmod 644 ${ICONDIR}/${icon}
done
# Desktop update
for desktop in *.desktop; do
cp $desktop $DESKTOPDIR/
chmod 644 ${DESKTOPDIR}/${desktop}
done
This seems like a pain, but it has consistently worked on my Z.
YMMV!

I haven't tried it on the Zaurus yet, but as with most Zaurus stuff it seems to require a fair deal of knowledge to get things going and on the gaming side, in general, it seems the development community isn't really there on the Zaurus the way it is with other applications.
There is no real technical reason the Zaurus can't handle SNES emulation well as other similar spec hand helds do a good job but you will always have control issues. But then you have them with the pocket pc too!
If you really want to play emulated games on the move, in my opinion, the device you need is a Tapwave Zodiac. A Palm based PDA. Get one of those and the free app Little John Z and you have emulated Genesis/Megadrive, Super Nintendo, NES, Gameboy and a few more. LJZ is being actively developed and already the standard of emulation is really superb. The Zodiac supports full screen scaling and smoothing so there is no performance loss running games full screen on it's lovely big screen.
The Zodiac is designed as a gaming PDA so it actually has gaming controls and is a delight to use.
I've just moved from a Zodiac to a Zaurus as there were things for the Zaurus that I really needed and cannot justify 2 PDAs right now. I do miss it and for emulation gaming in a PDA device nothing beats it right now.
Cheers
Marc

#!/bin/sh
/home/QtPalmtop/bin/snes9x -xs 320 -ys 240 "/home/zaurus/snes-roms/Earthworm_Jim_US.zip"
Well I didn't have the X/Y switches, but even with them I get the same results.
Could you maybe post a list of the libs you have installed?
I really can't see where it's going wrong, and snes9x doesn't write a log, so

If you have development image (dev_img-1.5) on your Z or some other copy of ldd you can run 'ldd -v' against snes9x and find out pretty quickly what is different.
-
Does anyone how to rotate the emulator so that it can work for the SL-6000 or at least how to reassign keys to make it work properly in landscape ?
ANYONE?????
-
stupkid, i don't have ldd (joy ), where can i find a decent gnu toolchain for the Z? Do you have that anywhere?
Also, the kPIM suite has been upgraded to 1.9.6
-
Has anyone experienced audio issues running znester on sl-5500 runniing OZ 3.2? When I was running znester on sharpRom, the audio sounded perfect, but when I switched to OZ 3.2, the audio sounds like it is either running too fast, or is at the wrong frequency. I love OZ, but I also love the emulator.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!!
-
Anyone know why when I was znester to run a game, the screen gets some garbled characters on it and freezes up? I can break out of it.
C860 w/Cacko 1.21b and the latest znester. Same thing through the front end software recommended at the beginning of this thread. I've tried different nes games. I can play other games - like Scumm stuff - just fine, so it's not an issue with the Z hardware AFAIK.
Maybe this will help - when I try to start from ZEMU, it goes into portrait mode. Why is that?
-
Fixed it. I had libSDL_1.2.6-zports_c7x0-2_arm.ipk installed. I put on libSDL_1.2.6-zports_c7x0-3_arm.ipk instead and it works. Is that -3 the latest version for the c7xx series? I see the libSDL page (http://zports.sourceforge.net/) has a libSDL_1.2.6-zports-5_arm.ipk, but since it doesn't have the c7x in it, I assumed it was'nt for the c7xx series.
ZEMU still starts in portrait mode, but when I launch a game, I no longer get the corrupted graphics. The game actually starts and it is in landscape. But is there any way to get ZEMU to start in Landscape?
-
Just a note if anyone else's trying to get a NES emulator working with OZ 3.5.1 on a SL-5500- when I tried I think it complained that libSDL didn't have some String symbol. I tried zfceu (http://www.brettsinger.net/zaurus/zfceucompletesl5500.zip) though, as mentioned by zaurusbs here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5045&st=0), and after installing zfceu and the libSDL in that package (not sure if that was needed or not, didn't try it with just the SDL from the OZ feed, but the two seem to coincide fine) and running makecompat on it it worked great, although zfceu_gui complains. Haven't tried the sound yet, I've stuck to the flags mentioned in the readme in that package.
Good luck all you Zaurusers, and a great thanks to all who've contributed information and work to the community!

The version -5 got the c7x0 removed, because it support the SL-6000 too. But its the lastest version of zports you should use that one

I know the subject is "Nintendo emulator for CX00", but I only have a lowly SL-5600. (Saving my pennies and hoping for a really good sale) Znester & zemufe work great on it (using Sharp rom 1.32 with Pre-emptive Standard kernel v1.2) . But because I don't have the C-series great keyboard, using the d-pad and the "x" and "z" keys for "a" and "b" buttons on the built-in keyboard is clumsy. Does anyone know of a way to remap the application buttons to become "x" and "z"?
I thought that maybe a script with a link to the file where the "Application Key" program looks for programs. Does anyone know where that would be?
Better yet, is there a program already written to do this?
-
OK, I'm running the nintendo emulator and everything works great except that its upside down. I have an 860 running tkc.
Anyone know about this?
-
There are two ways to fix this that I know of:
1. Install the latest version of zports libSDL (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/zports/libSDL_1.2.6-zports-5_arm.ipk?download) or any libSDL package that detects your Z model properly.
2. Add
export SDL_QT_INVERT_ROTATION=1
to your /home/QtPalmtop/qpe.sh

Are you runnign OPIE? Whe I try to install just Zfceu, it says I need zlib1g and libopie1, but when I try to install libopie1, it says that it depends on qt-embedded, which I can't seem to find anywhere. Any thoughts?

Omicron:
I have a C3000. I installed as suggested, and also installed libsdl from the zaurus feed (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/feed/libSDL_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk) ...
this actually works without any mods!
However, one problem remains... the screen is rotated when Im in clamshell mode. Does anyone know how to rotate the screen to clamshell mode from portrait (the qt rotate menu capabability is disabled!)
keys are also, rotated, right is down etc.
Ive also used InfoNES, which also works in clamshell mode. However, its in a tiny window and not fullscreen.
I'd just like a NES that runs full height on a clamshell C3000 via the keyboard ;-)
cheers,
D.

Umm... not so good, what i said above worked until I rebooted the C3000 ... now, I get through the gui and it freezes at startup.... locks up the Z and means a hard reset!!!!
any idea??
at first I thought it was the qte.sh export command, but I removed that again and the problem is still there. Doesn't work anymore ... Ill have another play when I get some more time.
cheers.

is OK if I flip to portrait mode first, then launch via qt ....
when in portrait mode, the game is offset to the right, missing part of the screen.
znestor does detect 480x640 when I run from the console.
as others get, running in root mode causes garbled screen..

OK!
Got zemu with znestor (znester_7.1-1_arm.ipk) working... on the C3000 (at least) you MUST use libSDL_1.2.6-zports-5_arm.ipk .. the other sdl lib causes display problems.
It works clamshell full screen , full music etc.
SO... there's only 1 problem... the arrow keys are all reversed. up is down, left is right , etc.
Just need to figure that one out ....

Hi. When I play znester its up side down on my SL-6000 I tried the zports sdl 5 and exporting SDL_QT_INVERT_ROTATION=1 but nothing seems to affect it. Can anyone help. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can actually reprogram your Znester keys, the configuration file is located usually at /home/zaurus/.znester/znester.rc.
Here's a link to my current znester.rc (http://www.kcgould.net/zaurus/znester.rc) for reference. This got the directions mapped correctly. You can probably just overwrite /home/zaurus/.znester/znester.rc with the contents of this file.
