I downloaded a program called Timetable from this link:
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1429 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1429)
But it seems to be some strange file type that won't install on the Z.
Can someone convert it for me to a real ipk? I don't know anything about Linux.
Thanks!
The file is attached.

Hey,
which rom and which zaurus do you use and own?
I could do it for openzaurus.
Cheers,
Sam

Nice tutorial and windows tools - works great. (http://home.comcast.net/~tadaalgaard/zaurus/java/ipk/)

I think all you need to do is rename the file so it ends with .ipk instead of .ipk.tar
The internals look correct for an IPK file...just named incorrectly,

I am running the original ROM on the 860, whatever it may be called. I tried renaming the file with an ipk extension, but the Add/Remove Proigram utility didn:t recognize it as an ipk package. I untarred the file and got the three files that are supposed to be in an ipk file, but I couldn't make an ipk file out of the three files. So I turn to the experts.

alled. I tried renaming the file with an ipk extension, but the Add/Remove Proigram utility didn:t recognize it as an ipk package.
Did you try to install it from the console?
Have a look at the Opie IPKG FAQ (http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/ipkg_20FAQ) on how to do that. It also covers building .ipk files under Linux.

The "original" ROM that comes with a C860 is the Sharp, usually modified from Japanese to (mostly) English. I have seen at least 3 versions on my C860s since Feb 2004.
Check your System Info (usually in Settings tab desktop window) & tap the Version tab for your details.
I d/l the file you attached, and found it to be a plain TAR file instead of a TGZ. Size 71,680 bytes.
I then d/l the file from the source you gave. That copy was a TGZ (aka IPK) file of 63,675 bytes.
The (timetablez_0.1_arm) file inside the (timetablez_0.1_arm.ipk) TGZ was identical in size and by direct byte comparison to the (timetablez_0.1_arm.ipk.tar) that you attached.
The GUI Add/Remove on my current working C860 (using the oldest Sharp ROM version - v1.20 JP) recognized it & installed it to SD card without problem.
I can't explain how you got a TAR file instead of a TGZ (IPK) since the file on the source side was already GZIP'd from what I could tell.
I'm attaching the IPK that worked for me to this note.

Thanks for this link. I've added it to the Opie Packagebuilding HowTo (http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/PackageBuildingHowTo) as others might find it useful, too

Thank you, Miami Bob--it works perfectly. I am ashamed that my eyeballs roll up into my head what when confronted with the idea of a terminal program. I can't even find one on my Z, And to think that I still have copies of MS DOS 1.0, in which I used to be a wizard. I bow to your greater wisdom in the Linux arena. Please nobody yell at me for being a dunce. I can't find the console either...

Great (G). You are very welcome.
I am ashamed that my eyeballs roll up into my head what when confronted with the idea of a terminal program. I can't even find one on my Z,
A Terminal (as opposed to a terminal console?) is just good old ProComm (or Telix or Xmodem or your favorite archaic com package here) in a new wrapper, man. Don't let it mess with your confidence.
And to think that I still have copies of MS DOS 1.0, in which I used to be a wizard.
If you really have working v1.0, I'd love a disk image of a bootable for my collection. You *do* know that the *real* MS DOS v1.0 was old Seattle Computing's QDOS pirate version of CPM86, right?? (G)
My current collection only goes back to v2.0 MS DOS. But I *do* have a ton of CPM flavors (and CCP/M & etc).
I bow to your greater wisdom in the Linux arena.
Naww. Don't do that. My *Linux* expertise is not so much. And quite a bit less than a year of Zaurus time. My deductions were done on a box limping WindHozed, using mostly Total Commander.
But my absolute first priority upon getting my first C860 was to understand why some IPKs wouldn't work. On *IPKs*, now, I *will* claim to know where of I speak (G).
Please nobody yell at me for being a dunce.
The only dunce is the idiot who is too stubborn proud to ask a question, IMHO!
We are ALL ignorant, in our own special areas of non expertise (G).
I can't find the console either...
A terminal console is just the comfortable old DOS command line under different managment. Your Z ought to have come with one (under the Apps tab?). I usually use the opie embedded Konsole (1.5.9-2), mainly because qKonsole (0.9.3-20040205) is such a memory pig in comparison.
Most highly suggest that you upgrade the terminal console that might have come with your original C860 AND add a 2nd just in case the first takes a hard dump. (it happens).
The terminal console is often the best, even only, way to really debug problems.
Welcome. Within a VERY short time, YOU will be helping answer questions, too. Wait & see (G).

There'd no console app in my Settings tab--I hunted around and couldn't find any such program. I suspected it was similar to a DOS box. Any recommendations on an external program to use instead?
Hey, I not only knew that MS-DOS was a clone of QDOS, I met Tim Patterson in his humble office and talked to him about it. I used to be the techncal editor of the PC Tech Journal and I wrote a monthly column for Creative Computing...guess I am really dating myself.

The 860 comes with the terminal not installed, but you'll find it on the CD. There is also qkonsole which google will find for you, and some people seem to prefer (why?)

Depends on where you get the C860 from. My Dynamism Zs came with terminal console installed (along with a lot of other apps).
(G)
Qkonsole on my C860 sucks up a LOT more memory than embedded Konsole.

Like a "DOS Box" in that its a command line interface. Not in like an emulato, keep in mind.

Search for embedded konsole &/or qkonsole.

Neat! You are not "dating" yourself any worse than others of us. (G)

Search how? QTree doesn't have a search mode as far as I can tell, and there's no other file manager that I can find with this feature.
I bought my Z in Akihabara and just converted the menus to English. I live in Japan half the year and need all the Japanese dictionaries and input features.
As for why I purchased it--my Toshiba 850 pda died and the choices in Akihabara were Clie or Zaurus. I adore the Z--it's much much better than the Toshiba in every way and can't understand why it never caught on. The translator software is absolutely amazing and I've never seen anything like it, even on the standalone dictionaries handhelds. We use it mostly to read ebooks on the train. Fabulous display.

I believe Bob meant for you to search like in google.
There should be a terminal on your cd to install or use this “qkonsoleâ€:
