I tried formatting my CF card using the howto on this site, but fdisk says that /dev/hda is an invalid argument.
Note that I am killing the cardmgr service first, as any attempt to mount the card just locks up the system.
Thank you for listening!

Try first to do
# umount /mnt/cf

Thankyou Yassen. My card is corrupt because a program crashed while writing to it.
If I insert the CF card now, the OS locks up.
To get around this, I kill the cardmgr process - so the card is not mounted.
But even continuing from there, the steps dont work. Any ideas?

May be you can find card reader and try to format it on the pc.
Do you have another card to test it in your Z?
It is very bad variant but must be checked. Remove card from the slot and look in it. Are all pins ok or some of them are bent?
