For software: http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/)

Geez, $1350 for the c860 seems extremely overpriced.

Value for money with anything can be a subjective thing.
Did you get value for money when you bought your SL-C860 for $800 ? That depends.
The Zaurus range of products at present probably suit the more technically advanced user or developer who is familiar with Linux. Value for money is typically realised by having the ability to make the unit do what you want and valuing the result of those efforts.
For some without the necessary background knowledge those efforts may involve a steep learning curve and people on the forum will generally do their best to help out, although if people just seem to turn up on the forum saying I bought a unit for $XXX, can't make it work, it's cr@p - then they probably won't get much help.
Practically I can say that the unit that you bought is a powerful system and to some people worth the price tag you payed. - There are, however, cheaper and simpler (more consumer aimed) units that will achieve typical PDA functionality and play movies.
So there you are, it's all entirely subjective as regarding value for money... as is indeed my opinion.

for all your IM needs, you can use gaim. It is best you find the homepage (I think it is a sourceforge page) because there are more than a few dependencies to install.
-
i payed 800 shipped for the pda then 500 in add ons
-
Install cacko on it, it's quite a step above the standard Sharp ROM.
Then get the K PIM suite to replace the Sharp PIM suite.

The SL-C860 is the best piece of hardware you can get. A lot of people dreaming to have one, I am an example. So no reason to be worried.
You can also try pdaXrom and openzaurus. There is alot of software for zaurus out there.
Cheers,
Sam

Congrats on your new unit! Welcome to the family!

Very well put!
For a simple PDA the SL-C860 is expensive... but for those with a true vision (such as having the SL-C860 REPLACE your laptop) the Zaurus is a real bargain!
If I tell my friends that I bought a $800 PDA, they think I'm crazy. When I tell other friends that I bought an old 400 Mhz, VGA, 128 MB RAM, 3 GB Harddrive, Linux laptop for $1000, they think that's ok... but then they flip when I tell them that this laptop I bought fits in my pocket! (Gives a new meaning to the term "carry on"! )

Movies are no problem, they play great. Only issus is it takes a while to convert them.
I had a good howto on the process....but it got lost and offroad hasn' t returned any emails about getting access to WIKI again.
Anyway, I felt alot like you when I got mine and I had a 5500 before that and was still kinda lost as to how to make it all work (There is a detailed post on making the Microdrive work witht the Z.....how to format on Z for use between Z and XP).
Take it one step at a time, I agree with previous poster. Instal a CackoQT ( and "B" patch) and that is a great start....it rocks and is rock solid.
Then you will be all set for movies, you just need to make them.
Then there is DOOM 2 and NES emulator for games.
Plenty of utils for linux techie stuff.
Portabase for decent database app.
Opera for web browing.
OpieReader program and www.Z4CK.org book for a start on ebook reading.
You bought a C860...and as such, you have begun a process...but in the end (a week or so of fiddling) you will have the machine of your dreams (shorter tim if you don't have a job !
As you need to add a new feature, get familiar with searching the forum and the HOW-to section. If that is not clear of something is not there, post here and we all will help.
Justifying a $1300+ investment is tough...mine is over that but I aquired my stuff little by little making it easier to justify.

So Markedman,
How are you doing with the 860 ?, have you got the basics of what you want ?, is there anything that you are still desperately struggling with ?

Ain't half a few dependancies your right but I've got that working thanks for bringing it to my attention - one more step closer to getting rid of my laptop! Now all I need is a serial port adaptor and a conversion for Sunnto Dive manager software from the PC so I can down my dives onto the Zaurus.......

How did you get NES Emulator working? Which link? Tell us the details... I would love to get that set up on my 860!
I think I may have your how-to video-conversion file saved offline. I'll attach it below. (Let me know if it doesn't come through).
hm... it won't let me attach it. I wonder why...
file: Zaurus SL-C760 Movie Player Conversion Tips.mht
I get a "Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer" error whenever I try to attach the file. Maybe it's some weird firewall problem... I'll try to find another way (maybe I'll put it on my site and link to it here...)

There it is.
Anyone know why I'm not able to attach that file to this thread?

Tony,
There is this feature of ZUG called SEARCH....perhaps you have heard of it ?
LOL Just kidding.
I wanted to put this in the howto's but having problems getting any response from offroad (it's okay. I know how hard he works for us all)
Anyway, here is the post,

Since the $800 is canadian dollars, markedman actually got a decent deal (as decent a deal as you can get when the exchange rate is killing your pocketbook).

I had it for 3 hours now its dead
