NOW SOLD! Thank you all for your interest.
I am considering offering an import service to the UK for those that don't want to do the conversion process or take the risk of ordering from Japan.
This will be very similar to what Shirtpocket are offering, but at a MUCH reduced rate.
Email me if you are interested. (marc@countinghouse.co.uk)
Cheers

Hi,
Just got a couple of these from PriceJapan and want to sell one of them.
Brand New Zaurus SL-C860
UK Power Supply
Brand New Ambicom Wifi Card
This has been converted to English with the latest Cacko ROM to ensure it was working properly.
The box got a bit sqished in the journey from Japan, but everything else is perfect.
I'd like £360 for the Zarus and PSU.
Or £400 with the wifi card.
Prices include special delivery. I accept cash, cheque or bank transfer. PayPal is okay, but you would have to cover the fees.
This would cost you around £600 with the wifi card from shirtpocket and if you do the math and consider import taxes it is actually less than getting it from PJ (and they don't supply a UK PSU or convert it for you.)
Send me an email ( marc@countinghouse.co.uk ) or PM to discuss.
Happy to meet up with the buyer if they can get close to Nottingham.
Note: The 12 month PJ warranty automatically transfers to the buyer.
Cheers

Very tempted and I go to Nottingham fairly regularly, any photos?

Hi,
What would you like pictures of? It just looks like a new Zaurus!
Email me your email address and I'll send you anything you want.

Just curious what the keyboard looked like as I thought it had to be altered to make it UK friendly?
-
A picture of the keyboard is here:
http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/images/zaurus750keyboard.jpg (http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/images/zaurus750keyboard.jpg)
It is parctically a full uk keyboard, only a couple of japense keys. Software in the cacko rom (or a program you can install for anything else) allows you to map those japenese keys to something useful.

Hmm, that link doesn't like direct access.
Go to ths page:
http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/docs/zaurus.SL-C750.SL-C760.php (http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/docs/zaurus.SL-C750.SL-C760.php)
And click the picture of the keyboard, bottom right in the block of 6.
The machines shown are the 750 with the black surrong. It is all silver on the 860.

Cool put me down as a tentative maybe.
I am up in Nottingham next Friday (1st Oct), so I'll definitely decide by then, but if you find someone else in the meantime who'll enthusiastically snap it up, then sell to them, as I already have a Z5500, so for me it's a "do I really really really need one?" decision
-
It does look seriously fab though!
-
No problem.
I suspect it might get sold before then though, you could sell it and get more on eBay straight away. I'm tempted to, but I thought I'd give back here first as I'm sure I'll be asking for a lot of help!
Do you need it? Do we ever need any of these toys?
Sell your 5500 on here/eBay to help fund it. You know it makes sense and once you've seen a VGA screen....
Cheers

After recently walking into a shop and buying an Apple 12" Powerbook, simply because it looked cool , I now have a "must sleep on it before buying it" policy when it comes to gadgets . Will definitely give it serious thought!
-
I understand and even try to do that myself.
Got me nowhere!
-
*sigh* oh well, at least I'm one of these boring people that spends money on gadgets and not other things! Though my flat is a bit of a gadget's graveyard! Ought to gather them all together and have a proper burial.
I'm assuming you kept one?
Did you have a Zaurus before?
-
I try and clear out as I upgrade, saves losing too much money! But I still have way too many things...
Yes I am keeping an 860. It looks great (they only arrived yesterday). I wanted VGA web browsing and gave up waiting on the Pocket PC world for decent VGA support.
I had no Zaurus before. But once I started reading about the 860 I knew I had to have one!
-
My gadget buying urges are all a twitch, but the brain is saying give it more thought. So I'll definitely give it more thought and contact you tomorrow. If someone is more definite before then, sell to them, I won't mind - plenty more gadgets out there to buy!
-
Okay Omro.
It stays available on here until you decide tomorrow (or someone buys it before you decide). At that point I'll close it here and take it to eBay and make some money...
Cheers

You'll crack! As soon as you start reading about it.
How about the Zaurus and a Sony TRV80 Mini DV camcorder (was £1000 12 months ago), for that 12" power book you obviously don't need...?!
-
I do need the Powerbook! I love it! My little gadget buying and wallet killing urges have been saying... iMac G5 and bin my Dell Dimension desktop!
Also on the, me want, droolometer are:
The OQO (http://www.oqo.com) mini PC and the Archos AV500 (http://shanebrinkmandavis.com/homepage/Archos/AV500/PrereleaseImages/)
So... I think... on balance... I'm going to wait for those...
I hope you find a buyer for your 860 either on here or more profitably on eBay.

The mini pcs do look cool, but they are either not here or they are way too expensive right now.

I Agree, I broke my teeth on a 5500 and then got the C860....
The first thing you notice is the keyboard and awesome screen..
Then the great ROMS Cacko QT (my favorite) and pdaxrom. (very cool, but not my preference yet).
Then you notice the POWER this has over the 5500.....Better movies, plays NES EMU games like originals, with sound ! (mame sorta sucks though).
And PIM iand word and ebook reading are just 10000% better betweeen the keyboard and screen.
Thing iis, C860 is a bit of an investment in time as well as money to make it your dream machine as you will find some old 5500 stuff doesn't work (a few games), but I have always found a comparable C860 program.
Biggest issue is that these are probably on the cusp of some serious depreciation as a new model should be released (in japan) within the next year ....this is just a guess knowing sharp.
-
I should add the warranty is transferable with PriceJapan, so you would still be covered. So there is a full 12 months left, less a few days.
I notice shirtpocket only offer a similar warranty.
-
Omicron,
Thanks for the positive words about the 860.
However you statement about new models is really just idle speculation. As far as I can tell there aren't even rumours of a new version, just thoughts of users. In fact I've also read stuff suggesting there will be no new models soon too.
In technology there is always something new coming, and when you buy something it is always going to depreciate pretty quickly. Of course we could always wait for the next version and never do anything!
You could argue that the 6000 is Sharp's new model and I read enough reviews and comparisons between the two machines to decide the 860 was much better for me (and for most comparing the two!).
Anyway we're getting a bit off track for a for sale thread here!

Marc,
Pity I missed out on your sale. I'm investigating the PDA market presently and seem to be settling on going with a Zaurus 860 next (completely fed up with my Ipaq 2210 constantly needing soft / hard resets because of software conflicts).
Is there any way to get a Zaurus 860 into the UK for less than 'Shirtpocket' prices at £535? Does the import tax mean its not worth it?
Is there any forums etc. to check out for second hand units apart from eBay? I'd be more than happy with a C700 or C750/760.
How hard is the conversion to english for a native sharp unit? Is it worth the extra money to Shirtpocket to get a english configured one.
Regards,
Garry

Hi Garry,
The import tax still makes it worth it, you'll get it for a lot less that Shirtpocket.
You have to consider power supply and conversion to English if you do it yourself.
Shirtpocket don't put the best ROM on in my opinion either.
Anyway have a look at PriceJapan if you want to import.
If you'd rather somone else did it I'll happily import one for you, change the power supply and convert it to English. I'll do it for £400, which means on a good day I'll make a few quid on a bad day I'll probably break even.
Drop me an email marc@countinghouse.co.uk if you are interested.
Happy to advise you more if you would rather do it yourself.

There is a C700 currently on eBay but if you can afford it I wouldn't go for less that a C750 if I were you.
Outside of eBay I haven't seen anywhere other than here where you'll find a supply of used Zaurus. Certianly not the clam shell models as there are probably very few in the UK.
I could work out a price on a C750 too if you like.

Marc,
Thanks for the information, really useful.
Hope you don't mind some extra questions.
Would the C750 be any cheaper, enough to consider it over the C860 at £400? (I'm not worried about memory, I have 4GB microdrive, a 512MB CF card plus two 256MB SD cards floating around).
During my web browsing I found the UK supplier of the 'Yopy 3700' for £199 new. I can however not find a decent comparison between the Sharp and the Yopy, differing camps of linux users it would seem like the differing pda's. I know the Yopy 3700 isn't anywhere as rounded a product as the Sharp Zaurus but £200 is a big gap between the two devices. Do you as a linux pda user have any views on the Yopy 3700? Would I have a hard time getting additional software for the Yopy? (Found plenty of Zaurus software from my SL5500 days).
Which ROM do you think is the better option for the Zaurus?
Thanks for all the advice, really having fun checking the various options out presently.
Regards,
Garry

Hi Garry,
Had a look at 750 prices and it seems the difference is only around £25. Probably not worth it as you have a longer battery life and more memory in an 860. Despite having memory cards more internal memory is good as you need it for running programs.
I've only really looked at 2 ROMs, the Cacko and the pdaXrom. The former is better if you want a PDA the latter is better if you want a mini laptop. There is some crossover of course.
Once you've had the unit a short time changing ROMs is easy enough to let you have a play with any of them.
I know very little about the Yopy, it briefly came under my consideration. Applications won't be a big issue as it seems to have an active community too however it only has a QVGA (so only a 1/4 of the 860 screen) resolution like a majority of pocket pcs. Once you compare that with VGA then there is no competiton, especially if you want to do things like web bowsing or reading documents. If you can live with a small screen it is an option, but then is it really a step up from your Zaurus?
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Marc
