Title: Opera browser crashes.
Post by: savithk on September 25, 2004, 04:56:38 am
Hello All,

While browsing internet sites on my Z, the browser (Opera) would crash/terminate due to lack of memory after browsing through multiple pages/sites.

Is there anyway we could improve/better manage memory in Z?  Is there anything that I could do to optimize memory.

While I am browsing no other application would be running, just the browser alone would be launched.

Following is detail of my Z:
Sharp Zaurus 5600
Opera 7.5

Please help!

Thanks & Regards,
Savith

What apps do you have set to 'Fast Load'? By default Calendar, Contacts, and email are set to 'Fast Load' which means they are kept in running memory.

I find opera has a memory leak or something when browsing lots of sites with images. I only run out of memory after quite a while though. You can also turn images off in the settings.

Opera uses a cache, and stores the many images you download. This is what is taking up all your memory. You can turn off images and won't have the memory problems anymore.
You could maybe even turn off the cache, and still look at the images.

That's the problem though. There are no cache settings in the preferences dialog and no cache ini file settings seem to work either.

Thanks a lot for tips n tricks Tunmnus & Lpotter!!!

I have changed the property (Fast load) for address book, calendar and to do.

I could go ahead and disable images and browse, but my majority of the time I would use my Z for storing route maps and directions  (Local files, I clean all local files after use).  If i disable images that would defeat the purpose.

I could disable caching though.  But how?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Savith

I also appreciate the fast load tip.  Disabling fast load does seem to have increased free buffer space...don't know how much it will help.

But I find disabling images by choosing 'no images' in the dropdown menu doesn't seem to prevent Opera from caching them anyhow...they just don't display.

Also, Opera doesn't apparently actually write the images you want to save to memory until after you exit Opera, so the trick I've been using of closing windows frequently isn't helpful when you want to save something unless you close the browser and open it back up again.

Wish we had more control over that cache.  Where on earth is it?

Try editing the

/home/zaurus/.opera/opera.ini file

set
Cache Figs=0 (dont cache images)
and
Empty On Exit=1 (clear out the doc cache when you quir opera)

Note the Cache Figs line appears twice once in disk cache and again in the Cache section Im guessing you need to change both for it to make any diffrence.

Can you post your applet somewhere?  It sounds useful.

here is the link to the application.

http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1235 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1235)

after installed, click on applet on lower right screen. highlight the swapfile tab and click on sd.  choose the swap size you want to creat and click on generate.  takes about a minute.  after creation, youncreate a swap file on sd.  after you created it, highlight the sd and click on.

remember that it turns off on reboot and ejecting the card.  the file stays and can be deleted if you want. but to enable it again, click on the location of the card which is in this case sd card and click on.  you will notice memory bar drop giving you more memory.  you can enable swap on cf too and run both swap files at the same time for a total of 128mn 64 per carrd.  i moded this one also for the cxxxx series but never posted it.

if you have problems, i have the original file.  this one was done by maslovski.

also must and needed file....sudo
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1112 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1112)  or you cannot run it.
